A New Transflective Geometry of Low Twisted Nematic Liquid Crystal Display having a Single Cell Gap

  • We have developed a new type of transflective liquid crystal display (LCD) with a single cell gap and a single LC mode. In our transflective configuration, a single LC mode of a 60$^{\circ}$ twisted nematic LC was used for both transmissive and reflective applications. The measured electro-optic characteristics of our transflective LC cell agree well with numerical simulation results. Moreover, the transmittance was found to show similar behavior to the reflectance.

  • Fast response characteristics of twisted nematic liquid crystal display (TN-LCD) cell with different nematic liquid crystals (NLCs) and cell gap on a rubbed polyimide (PI) surface were studied. High transmittance and fast response time of the TN-LCD on the rubbed PI surface were achieved by using high birefringence ($\Delta$ n) and low cell gap. It is considered that the transmittance and response time of the TN-LCD on the rubbed PI surface decreased as $\Delta$ nd decrease.

  • We investigated response characteristics of twisted nematic (TN) cell with different nematic liquid crystals (NLCs) and cell gap d on a rubbed polyimide (PI) surface. High transmittance and fast response time of the TN cell on the rubbed PI surface were achieved by using high birefringence (${\Delta}n$) and low cell gap d. The transmittance and response time of the TN cell on the rubbed PI surface decreased with decreasing ${\Delta}nd$. The fast response time of TN cell using high birefringence with ${\Delta}nd=0.363$ on the rubbed PI surface was measured 5.1 ms.

  • We investigated the electro-optica](EO) performances of the super twisted nematic liquid crystal display(STN-LCD) on the polyimide(PI) surface using polymer film. The NLC(Nematic Liquid Crystal) pretilt angles generated are about 18$^{\circ}$by the rubbing alignment method on thin plastic substrates. However, the pretilt angle are at about 13$^{\circ}$ lower on the glass substrate than on thin plastic substrate. Monodomain alignment of the plastic STN-LCD can be observed. A stable voltage-transmittance(V-T) curve of the plastic STN-LCD was observed on the polyimide(PI) surfaces using polymer film. Also, a faster response time for the plastic STN-LCD on the polyimide(PI) surfaces using polymer film can be achieved.

  • We have studied $90^{\circ}$ twisted nematic (TN) mode driven by fringe electric field, where two polarizers are parallel each other such that the cell shows a black state before a voltage is applied. According to the studies by computer simulation for a LC with negative dielectric anisotropy, the LC twists perpendicular to the horizontal field direction of fringe electric field and the degree of tilt angle is very low, when a voltage is applied. Therefore, the new device exhibits wide viewing angle characteristic due to in-plane switching and high transmittance since the LC director aligns parallel to the polarizer axis.

  • We have developed a transflective liquid crystal display (LCD) with a single cell gap and a low twisted nematic (LTN) mode in combination with a self-integrated retardation layer. The retardation layer was made of UV curable liquid crystalline material in one step of photo masking process and has both the homeotropic and the planar parts. The proposed transflective configuration has advantages in a simple fabrication process, and the possibility for a single driving scheme due to the similarity between the transmittance and the reflectance.

  • We investigated response characteristics of liquid crystal display(LCD) with different operating mode of nematic liquid crystals (NLCs) such as $45^{\circ}$twist nematic (TN), $67.3^{\circ}$TN and ECB(electrical controlled birefringence) on a rubbed polyimide (PI) surface. The three kinds of LCD operating mode obtain stable EO performance. Low transmittances of the $45^{\circ}$TN and $67.3^{\circ}$TN cell on the rubbed PI surface were achieved by using low cell gap d. The fast response time of ECB cell among the three kinds of LCD operating mode was measured.

  • In this paper, we have proposed a new row signal modulation method in order to display multi-gray image using super-twisted nematic liquid crystal display (STN-LCD), which has no complex computation, high selection ratio, and low driving voltage. By the proposed method, we have implemented a 320*240, 8-gray video-rate STN-LCD. For achieving a video-rate STN-LCD, 6 lines are selected at a time. Each row line is selected 8 times by equally distributed pulses throughout one frame. As a result, we can get 8 gray, video-rate image. The repetive horizontal pattern and the filckering was analyzed and the improvements have been presented.
