Effects of the Atmosphere on the Comparative Solderability of Lead-Tin and Lead-Free Solders

  • Due to pressure from threatened legislation in Europe, consumer and governmental pressure in Japan, and glob머 market considerations in the US, there is a rapidly growing interest in lead-free solderinger, Although the move to lead free soldering seems inevitable, many problems will arise in production assembly. It is generally acknowledged that the lead-free solders available offer a much s smaller process window than lead/tin, related mainly to the higher soldering temperatures which naturally result from increases of liquidus temperatures of at least 300 C. However, raising reflow temperatures from the current 220-2300 C to 250 2600 C will lead to problems with the boards and components as well as i increasing oxidation effects. There is a need to keep reflow temperatures low without reducing solderablity. Some results on benefits of inert atmospheres are discussed in this paper. For example, testing in a nitrogen atmosphere, with 300 ppm oxygen, by the N National Physical Laboratory (NPU has revealed clear benefits for ine$\pi$mg lead-free alloys, by restoring the solderability to lead/tin levels, by enabling lower soldering temperatures. However, there has been little testing over a range of oxygen levels in nitrogen and this is an important issue in determining n nitrogen supply and oven costs. Some results are reported here from work by NPL conducted for BOC in w which solderability was evaluated for tin기ead and tin/silver/copper eutectic a alloys in a wetting balance over a range of oxygen levels form 10 ppm to 21% ( (air). The studies confirm that acceptable wetting times occur in inert atmospheres a at soldering temperatures 20 to 300 C lower than are possible in air.

The Component and Statistical Analyses of Early-Joseon Metal Types in National Museum of Korea (국립중앙박물관 소장 조선 전기 금속활자의 조성성분과 통계분석)

  • Among about 500,000 characters in metal types in National Museum of Korea, this study conducts a statistical analysis of 62 metal types from the early Joseon Dynasty, including 33 gabinja (甲寅字) types and 29 eulhaeja (乙亥字) Hangeul types by examining the shape, measuring the specific gravity, and identifying the components based on previously-studied Joseon metal types. Among them, 33 gabinja types and 24 eulhaeja types were made of two-component bronze (copper and tin) (Group A), and four eulhaeja types were produced with three-component bronze (copper, tin and lead). (Group B), and one eulhaeja type was created with two-component bronze (copper and tin) with a high tin content (Group C). By comparing with imjinja (壬辰字) types of the late Joseon Dynasty based on multiple statistical analyses of type components, this study confirms that late-Joseon types have low copper content and high zinc and lead content, and therefore it may be possible to distinguish between the types of early and late Joseon Dynasty.

  • The tin-lead alloy was electrodeposited in the low range of peak current density in order to investigate the change of composition and microstructure of them. The Pb content of alloy deposits, which was decreased with increasing average current density, was relatively lower than that of D.C. plated alloy deposit. The preferred orientation of alloy deposit was changed with increasing peak current density and the surface morphology of alloy deposits was closely related to the preferred orientation of them.

  • Watershed delineation is the process of tracing surface water flow across a landscape to identify hydrologic basins. Manual and automated techniques have been developed to trace surface waters and locate watersheds on a variety of landscape. Low topographic relief landscapes, however, are particulary problematic for automated watershed delineation techniques. Therefore, this study aims at focusing the watershed delineation algorithm of low topographic relief landscape. By using topogrid, which manages enforcement drainage algorithms and incorporates topographic data into stream data, this study delineates watershed boundary in low relief landscape. Based on this research, in a low topographic relief landscape, enforcement drainage algorithms using topogrid generate better source grid to delineate watershed boundary than using only TIN. Also, comparing automated watershed delineation which incorporates contours and elevations into stream data with manual watershed delineation, we can know that the incorporation of both elevation and stream data generate more effective results.

Study of ITO/ZnO/Ag/ZnO/ITO Multilayer Films for the Application of a very Low Resistance Transparent Electrode on Polymer Substrate

  • Multilayer transparent electrodes, having a much lower electrical resistance than the widely used transparent conducting oxide electrodes, were prepared by using radio frequency magnetron sputtering. The multilayer structure consisted of five layers, indium tin oxided (ITO)/zinc oxide (ZnO)/Ag/zinc oxide (ZnO)/ITO. With about 50 nm thick ITO films, the multilayer showed a high optical transmittance in the visible range of the spectrum and had color neutrality. The electrical and optical properties of ITO/ZnO/Ag/ZnO/ITO multilayer were changed mainly by Ag film properties, which were affected by the deposition process of the upper layer. Especially ZnO layer was improved to adhesion of Ag and ITO. A high quality transparent electrode, having a resistance as low as and a high optical transmittance of 91% at 550 nm, was obtained. It could satisfy the requirement for the flexible OLED and LCD.

  • Graphene films have a strong potential to replace indium tin oxide anodes in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), to date. However, the luminous efficiency of OLEDs with graphene anodes has been limited by a lack of efficient methods to improve the low work function and reduce the sheet resistance of graphene films to the levels required for electrodes. Here, we fabricate flexible OLEDs by modifying the graphene anode to have a high work function and low sheet resistance, and thus achieve extremely high luminous power efficiencies (37.2 lm/W in fluorescent OLEDs, 102.7 lm/W in phosphorescent OLEDs), which are significantly higher than those of optimized devices with an indium tin oxide anode (24.1 lm/W in fluorescent OLEDs, 85.6 lm/W in phosphorescent OLEDs). We also fabricate flexible white OLED lighting devices using the graphene anode. These results demonstrate the great potential of graphene anodes for use in a wide variety of high-performance flexible organic optoelectronics.

The Prediction of Spacial Variability for Soil Information in Paddy Field (토양정보별 포장내 공간변이 예측에 관한 연구)

  • This study was carried out to verify and predict the soil informations such as the contents of organic matter(OM) and Mg and pH of the soil. The predictability of spacial variation in the paddy field was examined by analyzing the various soil information. The prediction models for the OM pH, and Mg, were developed using inverse distance weighted (IDW), triangulated irregular network(TIN) and Kriging model. The determination of coefficients of linear and spherical Kriging models were 0.756 and 0.578, respectively, and were very low in comparison with other soil information. For IDW and TIN model, the determination of coefficients were 1.000 and hence the performance of the models was found to be excellent. The developed models were validated using unknown soil sample obtained In 2000 and 2001. From the analysis of relationship between the measured pH and predicted 0.9353. For prediction of Mg, the determination of coefficient is more than 0.8. Since the determination of coefficients of developed models for OM were relatively low, it may be difficult to predict the content of OM using the developed models. For further study, the additional works to enhance the performance of the prediction models for soil information are required.

  • Recently, it has been increasing trend to use conductive materials as electronics and communication technology in electronics industry are developing. The noble metal such as Ag, Pt, Pd etc. are mostly used as conductive materials, To reduce production cost, alternative materials with similar characteristics of noble metals are needed. Copper has advantages, i.e its electronic properties are similar to noble metals and low cost than noble metal, but its use has been restricted because of oxidation in air. In this study, the tin film was coated on copper by electroless plating to protect copper from oxidation and to confirm the effects of temperature, pH, amount of $SnCl_2$, and feeding speed in plating conditions. Additionally, we apply $Cu_{core}Sn_{shell}$ powder as conductive filler with low-temperature densification and analysis by SEM, XRD, FIB and 4-Point Probe techniques. As result of the study, tin film was coated well on copper and was protected from oxidation. After low-temperature densification treatment, the meted tin made chemical interconnections with copper. Accordingly, conductivity was increased than before condition. We hope $Cu_{core}Sn_{shell}$ powder to replace noble metals and use in the electronic field.

An Embedded system for real time gas monitoring using an ART2 neural network

  • We propose a real time gas monitoring system for classifying various gases with different concentrations. Using thermal modulation of operating temperature of two sensors, we extract patterns of gases from the voltage across the load resistance. We adopt the relative resistance as a pre-processing method and an ART2 neural network as a pattern recognition method. The proposed method has been implemented in a real time embedded system with tin oxide gas sensors, TGS 2611, 2602 and an MSP430 ultra-low power microcontroller in the test chamber.
