In this experiment, interactions between light and other factors such as chilling, alternating temperature, moisture, content, oxygen, and seed coat which affect germination of Oenothera lamarckiana Ser. seed were investigated to study the physiological effects of light on the germination. Light induced the initial stage of seed germination before radical protrusion by affecting embryo rather than seed coat even under anaerobic condition or low water potential (-18 bars). This light effect on germinability of seed was suppressed by blue light irradiation and the effect was increased with increment of blue light intensity and irradiation time. However, the blue light effect was reversible. Chilling, alternating temperature, softening of seed coat and light showed promotive interaction in the induction of seed germination. Irradiation of filtered light (monochrome), however, reduced chilling effect on germination. Hydrogen-ion concentration and gibberellic acid treatment had no effect on light or dark germination.
ZnS powder was synthesized using a relatively facile and convenient glycothermal method at various reaction temperatures. ZnS was successfully synthesized at temperatures as low as $125^{\circ}C$ using zinc acetate and thiourea as raw materials, and diethylene glycol as the solvent. No mineralizers or precipitation processes were used in the fabrication, which suggests that the spherical ZnS powders were directly prepared in the glycothermal method. The phase composition, morphology, and optical properties of the prepared ZnS powders were characterized using XRD, FE-SEM, and UV-vis measurements. The prepared ZnS powders had a zinc blende structure and showed average primary particles with diameters of approximately 20~30 nm, calculated from the XRD peak width. All of the powders consisted of aggregated secondary powders with spherical morphology and a size of approximately $0.1{\sim}0.5{\mu}m$; these powders contained many small primary nanopowders. The as-prepared ZnS exhibited strong photo absorption in the UV region, and a red-shift in the optical absorption spectra due to the improvement in powder size and crystallinity with increasing reaction temperature. The effects of the reaction temperature on the photocatalytic properties of the ZnS powders were investigated. The photocatalytic properties of the as-synthesized ZnS powders were evaluated according to the removal degree of methyl orange (MO) under UV irradiation (${\lambda}=365nm$). It was found that the ZnS powder prepared at above $175^{\circ}C$ exhibited the highest photocatalytic degradation, with nearly 95 % of MO decomposed through the mediation of photo-generated hydroxyl radicals after irradiation for 60 min. These results suggest that the ZnS powders could potentially be applicable as photocatalysts for the efficient degradation of organic pollutants.
An assessment of the nutritional aspects on irradiated garlic bulbs, stored for 10 months at low$(3{\pm}1^{\circ}C,\;75{\sim}85%\;R.H.)$ and room$(12{\pm}5^{\circ}C,\;75{\sim}85%\;R.H.)$, was performed by means of investigations on the changes in some chemical composition. Ionizing energy treatment at 0.1kGy gamma-ray brought about no significant changes in the moisture content of stored garlic, but it contributed to the reduction of the changes in total available carbohydrate content of stored garlic. After 8 months of storage, the content of free sugars was significantly higher in nonirradiated garlic than in irradiated garlic, especially in low temperature storage. The 0.1kGy irradiation at the sprout-inhibition dose had no apparent effect on the content of ascorbic acid in stored garlic, and sulfurcontaining amino acids appeared to be little affected by the irradiation at 0.1kGy, even though there were some sensitive amino acids like glutamic and aspartic acids.
${\gamma}-Radiation$ at very low doses frequently has a stimulating or hormetic effect on the growth of organism. Effects of low dose ${\gamma}-ray$ irradiation on the root growth of soybean cultivars were investigated and hormetic effects by environmental conditions were compared with the occurrence of increased economic yield, seeds of cultivars were irradiated with the dose of $0.5{\sim}20Gy$ and cultivated in growth chamber controling temperature, humidity, light, greenhouse and field respectively. To understand hormetic effect on root growth of cultivars and the difference of hormetic effect by cultivation environment, harvested root of soybean cultivars were scanned with image file, and root surface area, root length, root average diameter etc. were examined by WinRhizo program. Also, dry weight of cultivars was examined. Root growth and dry weight of soybean cultivars showed apparently hormetic effect at cultivation of growth chamber condition. In field experiment executed for whole life cycle, yields of pea were not different significantly in each ${\gamma}-ray$ irradiated cultivars but weight of one hundred peas increased in whole ${\gamma}-ray$ irradiated cultivars. Increment of yield was assumed to be induced through shortening of maturing stage caused by ${\gamma}-ray$ hormesis in early growth stage.

The dynamic behavior of Al-Mg alloys plasma was very unstable and this instability was closely related to the unstable motion of keyhole during laser irradiation. The keyhole fluctuated both in size and shape and its fluctuation period was about 440 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. This instability has been estimated to be caused by the evaporation phenomena of metals with different boiling point and latent heats of vaporization. Therefore, the authors have conducted the spectroscopic diagnostics of plasma induced in the pulsed YAG laser welding of Al-Mg alloys in air and argon atmospheres. In the air environment, the identified spectra were atomic lines of Al, Mg, Cr, Mn, Cu, Fe and Zn, and singly ionized Mg line, as well as strong molecular spectrum of AlO, MgO and AIH. It was confirmed that the resonant lines of Al and Mg were strongly self-absorbed, in particular in the vicinity of pool surface. The self-absorption of atomic Mg line was more eminent in alloys containing higher Mg. These facts showed that the laser-induced plasma was relatively a low temperature and high density metallic vapor. The intensities of molecular spectra of AlO and MgO were different each other depending on the power density of laser beam. Under the low power density irradiation condition, the MgO band spectra were predominant in intensity, while the AlO spectra became much stronger in higher power density. In argon atmosphere the band spectra of MgO and AlO completely vanished, but AlH molecular spectra was detected clearly. The hydrogen source was presumably the hydrogen solved in the base Metal, absorbed water on the surface oxide layer or H$_2$ and $H_2O$ in the shielding gas. The temporal change in spectral line intensities was quite similar to the fluctuation of keyhole. The time average plasma temperature at 1 mm high above the surface of A5083 alloy was determined by the Boltzmann plot method of atomic Cr lines of different excitation energy. The obtained electron temperature was 3, 280$\pm$150 K which was about 500 K higher than the boiling point of pure aluminum. The electron number density was determined by measuring the relative intensities of the spectra1lines of atomic and singly ionized Magnesium, and the obtained value was 1.85 x 1019 1/㎥.
DNA damages in post-mortem bovine muscle samples caused by gamma irradiation at doses of 1 to 10 kGy were determined by Comet assay. When the cell extract was prepared in a physical method and followed by neutral lysis and neutral electrophoresis, the optimal comet images could be obtained. DNA damages were evaluated from the mean tail length, the distributions of comet images in 4 groups divided by tail length and the relative damage index (RDI) values calculated from the distribution pattern. The mean tail length and RDI value were increased by increasing the irradiation dose, and the RDI value was found to be useful as an index for discriminating of irradiation and measuring the irradiated dose. Blind tests using Korean domestic (Hanwoo) and imported beef samples showed a higher RDI value for the latter. However, the value was lower than those of irradiated samples indicating that the cause of DNA damages in the imported beef samples might be not irradiation but low-temperature treatments. It was concluded from the results of this study that the irradiated beef and its irradiated dose could be detected and predicted by Comet assay.

The heat transfer problem associated with pulse technique for measuring thermal diffusivity was solved by means of Green function. The obtained general solution was discussed so as to apply for all possible cases; kinds of boundary condition and heat source, irradiation positions of heat pulse, radius of heat pulse, one-and two-dimensional heat flow, finite pulse time effects and radiation heat loss systems. Experimentally, the laser flash lamp was used as heat source for measuring thermal diffusivity of low carbon, aluminium chilled steel plate, which was heavily rolled in order to measure the variation of thermal diffusivity in the temperature range from room temperature through 500.deg. C. The derived results are (1) materials produced from same furnace showed a somewhat different thermal diffusivity values. (2) the thermal diffusivity value of rolled material was smaller than unrolled material and the difference decreased as increasing temperature. (3) the thermal diffusivity value of an annealed and temper rolled material was larger than the value of a cold rolled material, even thought smaller than unrolled material. (4) In case of heavy rolled material, there was no consistent relationships between the thermal diffusivity and the reduction in thickness.
Methyl ester derived from coconut oil is very interesting to study since it contains free-fatty acid with chemical structure of medium carbon chain ($C_{12}-C_{14}$), so the methyl ester obtained from its part can be a biodiesel and another partially into biokerosene. The use of heterogeneous catalysts in the production of methyl ester requires severe conditions (high pressure and high temperature), while at low temperature and atmospheric conditions, yield of methyl ester is relatively very low. By using microwave irradiation trans-esterification reaction with heterogeneous catalysts, it is expected to be much faster and can give higher yields. Therefore, we studied the production of methyl ester from coconut oil using CaO catalyst assisted by microwave. Our aim was to find a kinetic model of methyl ester production through a transesterification process from coconut oil assisted by microwave using heterogeneous CaO catalyst. The experimental apparatus consisted of a batch reactor placed in a microwave oven equipped with a condenser, stirrer and temperature controllers. Batch process was conducted at atmospheric pressure with a variation of CaO catalyst concentration (0.5; 1.0; 1.5; 2.0, 2.5%) and microwave power (100, 264 and 400 W). In general, the production process of methyl esters by heterogeneous catalyst will obtain three layers, wherein the first layer is the product of methyl ester, the second layer is glycerol and the third layer is the catalyst. The experimental results show that the yield of methyl ester increases along with the increase of microwave power, catalyst concentration and reaction time. Kinetic model of methyl ester production can be represented by the following equation: $-r_{TG}=1.7{\cdot}10^6{_e}{\frac{-43.86}{RT}}C_{TG}$.
Effect of gamma irradiation on the microbiological and physicochemical characteristics of steamed waxy corns was determined in order to develop preservation techniques to enhance shelf-life during storage at room or low temperature. The initial total microbial count, and yeast & molds steamed waxy corns before irradiation were $2.1{\times}10^3CFU/g,\;1.9{\times}10^3CFU/g$, respectively. However, the total microbial count were completely inactivated and the count of yeast and molds were only 34 CFU/g at 3 kGy treatment When non-irradiated steamed waxy corns were stored at $25^{\circ}C$ for 7 months, the growth of total microbial counts and yeasts & molds were rapidly increased up to $7.1{\times}10^6CFU/g\;and\;1.9{\times}10^7CFU/g$, respectively. However, the total microbial counts at 3 kGy treatment and yeast & molds at 5 kGy treatment for 7 month storage were completely inactivated Similar result was observed at $15^{\circ}C$ and $4^{\circ}C$ storage. The Hardness of the irradiated steamed waxy corns and irradiation dose were not significantly different from those of the non-irradiated steamed waxy corns before storage, but the hardness of non-irradiated steamed waxy corns was significantly increased during the storage, compared to those of irradiated corns. The water content of both irradiated and non-irradiated steamed waxy corns after 7 month storage were significantly decreased from $65{\sim}60%$ to 30% but the changes of water content among treatments or irradiation doses were not significantly different during storage. Sugar contents in the irradiated steamed waxy corns were less free than those of non-irradiated samples and the amount of free sugar slowly increased as storage temperature increased. Sensory evaluation result showed that total sensory scores in irradiated steamed waxy corns were better than those of non-irradiated samples and total sensory scores were increased as irradiation doses increased.

Porous silicon were prepared under various anodization condition on n-Si substrates. Chronoamperometric curves of porous silicon depended on potentials, composition and temperature of electrolytes. and intensity of UV irradiation. Anodic current density decreased continuously at low potential $(\leq0.5V)$ but increased at high potentials (>2V vs. Ag QRE). the difference in chronoamperometric curve is due to different activation energy in the processes involved in porous silicon formation.
