Processing, structure, and properties of lead-free piezoelectric NBT-BT

  • Lead-free piezoelectric materials have been actively studied to substitute for conventional PZT based solid solution, $Pb(Zr_xTi_{1-x}O_3)$, which occurs unavoidable PbO during the sintering process. Among them, Bismuth Sodium Titanate, $Na_{0.5}Bi_{0.5}TiO_3$ (abbreviated as NBT) based solid solution is attracted for the one of excellent candidates which shows the strong ferroelectricity, Curie temperature (Tc), remnant polarization (Pr) and coercive field (Ec). Especially, the solid solution of rhombohedral phase NBT with tetragonal perovskite phase has a rhombohedral - tetragonal morphotropic phase boundary. Modified NBT with tetragonal perovskite at the region of MPB can be applied for high frequency ultrasonic application because of not only its low permittivity, high electrocoupling factor and high mechanical strength, but also effective piezoelectric activity by poling. In this study, solid state ceramic processing of NBT and modified NBT, $(Na_{0.5}Bi_{0.5})_{0.93}Ba_{0.7}TiO_3$ (abbreviated as NBT-7BT), at the region of MPB using 7 % $BaTiO_3$ as a tetragonal perovskite was introduced and the structure between NBT and NBT-7BT were analyzed using rietveld refinement. Also, the ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties of NBT-7BT such as permittivity, piezoelectric constant, polarization hysteresis and strain hysteresis loop were compared with those of pure NBT.

Characteristics of Bulk and Coating in Gd2-xZr2+xO7+0.5x(x = 0.0, 0.5, 1.0) System for Thermal Barrier Coatings

  • Gadolinium zirconate, $Gd_2Zr_2O_7$, is one of the most versatile oxides among the new thermal-barrier-coating (TBC) materials for replacing conventional yttira-stabilized zirconia (YSZ). $Gd_2Zr_2O_7$ exhibits excellent properties, such as low thermal conductivity, high thermal expansion coefficient comparable with that of YSZ, and chemical stability at high temperature. In this study, bulk and coating specimens with $Gd_{2-x}Zr_{2+x}O_{7+0.5x}$ (x = 0.0, 0.5, 1.0) compositions were fabricated in order to examine the characteristics of this gadolinium zirconate system with different Gd content for TBC applications. Especially, coatings with $Gd_{2-x}Zr_{2+x}O_{7+0.5x}$ (x = 0.0, 0.5, 1.0) compositions were produced by suspension plasma spray (SPS) with suspension of raw powder mixtures prepared by planetary milling followed by ball milling. Phase formation, microstructure, and thermal diffusivity were characterized for both sintered and coated specimens. Single phase materials with pyrochlore or fluorite were fabricated by normal sintering as well as SPS coating. In particular, coated specimens showed vertically-separated columnar microstructures with thickness of $400{\sim}600{\mu}m$.

Aluminium Distearate 첨가가 $UO_2$ 핵연료 제조에 미치는 영향 (Effect of the Addition of Aluminium Distearate on Manufacturing of $UO_2$ Nuclear Fuel)

  • This study has been investigated on the milling of Aluminium Distearate (ADS) powder and characteristics of the ADS-doped UO2 pellets. As-received ADS powder of the agglomerated particles has not shown any milling effect because of heat generated during planetary milling. But the use of coolant to effectively remove heat generated during milling has been found an effective way in breaking up the agglomerates of ADS powder. The green density of the UO2 pellet decreases with the amount of ADS powder doped. Therefore, in order to get the sintered density of 95% pellet decreases with the amount of ADS powder doped. Therefore, in order to get the sintered density of 95% theoretical density, the 200 ppm ADS-doped UO2 pellet has to be pressed under higher compacting pressure of 3500~4000 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ compared with the ADS-undoped UO2 pellet pressed under around 3000 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$. The ADS-dpoed UO2 pellet with even relatively low sintered density of 10.27 g/㎤ exhibits open porosity of 1% while open porosity of the ADS-undoped UO2 pellet is reduced to around 1% only after its sintered density increases to 10.43g/㎤. It is, therefore, concluded that doping of ADS powder significantly contributes to the decrease in open porosity of the UO2 pellet. The dilatometry of the ADS doped UO2 pellet shows the sintering rate curve with the bimodal mode, which could be attributed to a phase reaction between UO2 and ADS. The X-ray diffraction analysis indicates that there occurs not any new phase formed but the shift of the peaks. It would be expected that a phase reaction resulting in solid solution would happen in the temperature range of 130$0^{\circ}C$ to 150$0^{\circ}C$ between UO2 and ADS.

  • Sol-gel 법으로 200 nm 정도의 두께를 가진 강유전성 S $r_{0.9}$B $i_{2.1}$T $a_{1.8}$ N $b_{0.2}$ 박막을 Pt/Ti $O_2$/ $SiO_2$/Si 기판 위에 증착하였다. 본 실험에서는 Sr(O $C_2$ $H_{5}$)$_2$, Bi(TMHD)$_3$, Ta(O $C_2$ $H_{5}$)$_{5}$ 그리고, Nb(O $C_2$ $H_{5}$)$_{5}$를 출발 물질로 사용하였으며 2-methoxyethanol을 용매로 사용하였다. UV 노광과 급속열처리가 SBTN 박막의 구조와 전기적 특성에 어떤 영향을 주는 가를 연구하였다. UV 노광과 급속열처리를 한 후에 $650^{\circ}C$ 열처리한 SBTN 박막의 3V와 5V 인가 전압하에서의 잔류분극 값은 각각 8.49와 11.94 $\mu$C/$ extrm{cm}^2$이었다.

Nd1+XBa2-XCu3O7-δ Bulk Superconductor by Zone-melt Process

  • Two kinds of $Nd_{1+X}Ba_{2-X}Cu_3O_{7-{\delta}}$, the sintering samples and zone melting samples, were heat-treated under pure Ar at 950$^{circ}C$. The substitution of Nd ion for Ba ion in the $Nd_{1+X}Ba_{2-X}Cu_3O_{7-{\delta}}$ before and after the heat treatment was investigated by XRD. In order to confirm the effects of the heat treatment, the Tc and Jc of samples with/without the heat treatment under Ar were comparatively studied. $Nd_{1+X}Ba_{2-X}Cu_3O_{7-{\delta}}$ samples were oxygenated under pure oxygen at $300^{circ}C$. From the XRD pattern it was found that the sample with x<0.4 was transferred from tetragonal phase to orthorhombic phase after the oxygenation, while the sample with x>0.4 did not show the phase transition even after a long time oxygenation. Therefore, the low oxygen partial pressure (Ar+1 % O$_2$) was used for the ambient atmosphere of the zone-melting samples, which could reduce the melting temperature and depress the substitution of Nd for Ba. After the improvement in the zone-melting process, the Jc value was increased to 2 x $10^4$A/$cm^2$ (0 T, 78 K). The particle orientation and the structure of zone-melted NdBaCuO were studied by the XRD and SEM analysis.

  • 본 연구는 $Bi_2O_3$, ZnO 및 $Nb_2O_5$로 이루어진 두 가지의 $Bi_2(Zn_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})_2O_7$$(Bi_{1.5}Zn_{0.5})(Zn_{0.5}Nb_{1.5})O_7$ pyrochlore를 제조한 후, ZBS 및 BZBS 유리를 각각 첨가하여 저온 소결 및 마이크로파 유전 특성을 고찰하였다. 두 가지의 pyrochlore에 대하여 하소 온도에 따른 상 합성 유무를 고찰한 결과 $900^{\circ}C$에서 단일 상을 갖는 pyrochlore를 제조할 수 있었다. 두 가지의 pyrochlore에 ZnO-rich ZBS 유리와 $Bi_2O_3$-rich BZBS 유리를 3, 5 wt%로 첨가한 후 $800{\sim}950^{\circ}C$에서 소결한 결과 ZBS 및 BZBS 유리를 5wt%를 첨가하였을 때 $900^{\circ}C$에서 소결이 가능하였다. 또한 마이크로파 유전 특성을 고찰한 결과, $(Bi_{1.5}Zn_{0.5})(Zn_{0.5}Nb_{1.5})O_7$의 pyrochlore는 고주파에서 유전 특성 측정이 되지 않았다. $Bi_2(Zn_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})_2O_7$의 pyrochlore의 경우 5 wt% ZBS 및 BZBS 유리를 첨가하여 $900^{\circ}C$에서 소결한 시편의 마이크로파 유전 특성은 ${\varepsilon}_r$= 62.8~68.3, $Q{\times}f$ value= 3,500~2,700 GHz을 나타내었다.

  • 압전액츄에이터 및 초음파진동자는 전자제품의 소형화 및 경량화, 의료기기, 모바일기기 및 소형로붓의 발전에 힘입어 그 활용범위가 넓게 확장되고 있다. 1960년 Smolenski등에 의해 $A(B_1,B_2)O_3$형 복합 페로브스카이트 구조를 갖는 강유전성 세라믹스에 대한 연구가 시작된 이래 $Pb(Co,Nb)O_3-Pb(Zr,Ti)O_3$, $Pb(Zn,Nb)O_3-Pb(Zr,Ti)O_3$, $Pb(Mg,Nb)O_3-Pb(Zr,Ti)O_3$ 등 3성분계 세라믹스의 유전, 압전 및 강유전 특성에 대한 많은 연구가 진행되어 왔다. 그러나 압전성이 우수한 세라믹스들은 Pb가 포함되어 있기 때문에 $1000^{\circ}C$ 이상에서 PbO가 급격하게 휘발되는 성질에 따라서 조성의 변동이 생겨 재현성이 어려우며 이를 방지하기 위하여 과잉 PbO를 첨가시키기 때문에 환경오염뿐만 아니라, 경제적인 측면에서도 많은 문제점을 가지고 있다. 소결조제를 이용한 산화물 첨가법은 PbO의 휘발을 억제하는 저온소결 방법중 가장 효과적인 방법으로 알려져 있다. 따라서, 본 연구에서는 적층형 압전액츄에이터로 사용하기위한 저온소결 압전세라믹스를 개발하기 위하여 PZN-PZT세라믹스에 $Li_2CO_3$, $Bi_2O_3$, CuO 를 소결조제로 사용하여 $Li_2CO_3$의 첨가량 변화에 따른 압전 및 유전 특성을 관찰하였다.

Bonding Strength of Conductive Inner-Electrode Layers in Piezoelectric Multilayer Ceramics

  • Multilayer ceramics in which piezoelectric layers of $0.90Pb(Zr_{0.48}Ti_{0.52})O_3-0.05Pb(Mn_{1/3}Sb_{2/3})O_3-0.05Pb(Zn_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3$ (0.90PZT-0.05PMS-0.05PZN) stack alternately with silver electrode layers were prepared by an advanced low-temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) method. The electrical properties and bonding strength of the multilayers were associated with the interface morphologies between the piezoelectric and silver-electrode layers. Usually, the inner silver electrodes are fabricated by sintering silver paste in multi-layer stacks. To improve the interface bonding strength, piezoelectric powders of 0.90PZT-0.05PMS-0.05PZN with an average particle size of $23{\mu}m$ were added to silver paste to form a gradient interface. SEM observation indicated clear interfaces in multilayer ceramics without powder addition. With the increase of piezoelectric powder addition in the silver paste, gradient interfaces were successfully obtained. The multilayer ceramics with gradient interfaces present greater bonding strength as well as excellent piezoelectric properties for 30~40 wt% of added powder. On the other hand, over addition greatly increased the resistance of the inner silver electrodes, leading to a piezoelectric behavior like that of bulk ceramics in multilayers.

PNN 치환에 따른 저온소결 PMS-PMN-PZT계 세라믹스의 압전 및 유전특성 (Piezoelectric and Dielectric Characteristics of Low Temperature Sintering PMS-PNN-PZT Ceramics According to the Amount of PNN Substitution)

  • 압전 액츄에이터 및 초음파진동자의 응용범위가 넒어짐에 따라 변위량, 응력 등을 개선시키기 위해 전기기계결합계수 kp 및 압전 d상수가 종전보다 큰 재료가 요구되고 있으며, 초음파진동자나 압전 모터와 같이 마찰에 의한 열손실이 많이 발생하는 액츄에이터에 적용할 큰 기계적품질계수롤 가지는 저손실 압전 액츄에이터 및 초음파진동자용 재료가 필요한 실정이다. PZT계 세라믹스는 높은 유전상수와 압전특성으로 전자세라믹스분야에서 가장 널리 사용되어지고 있지만, $1200^{\circ}C$이상의 높은 소결온도 때문에 $1000^{\circ}C$ 부근에서 급격히 휘발되는 PbO로 인한 환경오염과 기본조성의 변화로 인한 압전특성의 저하가 문제시 되고 있다. $Pb(Ni_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3$는 약 $-120^{\circ}C$정도의 큐리온도룰 가지는 강유전체로 Pb(Zr, Ti)$O_3$계 세라믹스에 치환 시 유전상수와 전기기계결합계수를 개선시키는 대표적인 성분이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 저온소결 저손실의 적층형 압전 액츄에이터를 개발하기 위해 PMS-PMN-PZT계 세라믹스에 $Pb(Ni_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3$ 세라믹스를 치환하고 $Li_2CO_3$$Na_2CO_3$ ZnO를 소결조재로 사용하여 저온소결 하였으며 PNN 치환량에 따른 결과를 관찰 하였다.

상용 Al2O3 분말의 비교분석 및 이를 이용하여 제조한 슬러리의 분산 특성 (Comparative Analysis of Commercial Al2O3 Powders and the Dispersion Characteristics of Slurries Produced Using Them)

  • Al2O3 has excellent sintering properties and is important in semiconductor manufacturing processes that require high-temperature resistance and chemical inertness in a plasma environment. In this study, a comprehensive analysis of the chemical characteristics, physical properties, crystal structure, and dispersion stability of three commercially available Al2O3 powders was conducted. The aim was to provide a technological foundation for selecting and utilizing appropriate Al2O3 powders in practical applications. All powders exhibited α-Al2O3 as the main phase, with the presence of beta-phase Na2O-11Al2O3 as the secondary phase. The highest Na+ ion leaching was observed in the aqueous slurry state due to the presence of the secondary phase. Although the average particle size difference among the three powders was not significant, distinct differences in particle size distribution were observed. ALG-1SH showed a broad particle size distribution, P162 exhibited a bimodal distribution, and AES-11 displayed a uniform unimodal distribution. High-concentration Al2O3 slurries showed differences in viscosity due to ion release when no dispersant was added, affecting the electrical double-layer thickness. Polycarboxylate was found to effectively enhance the dispersion stability of all three powders. In the dispersion stability analysis, ALG-1SH exhibited the slowest sedimentation tendency, as evidenced by the low TSI value, while P162 showed faster precipitation, influenced by the particle size distribution.
