  • We report low conversion loss and high LO to RF isolation 94 GHz MMIC resistive mixers based on 0.1 ${\mu}m$ InGaAs/InAlAs/GaAs metamorphic HEMT technology. The fabricated resistive mixers applied a one-stage amplifier on RF port of the mixer. By using the one-stage amplifier, we obtained the decrement of conversion loss and the increment of LO to RF isolation. So, we can obtain higher performances than conventional resistive mixers. The modified mixer shows excellent conversion loss of 6.7 dB at a LO power of 10 dBm. We also observed an extremely high isolation characteristic from the MMICs exhibiting the LO-RF isolation of 21 ${\pm}$ 0.5dB in a frequency range of 93.7${\sim}$ 94.3 GHz. The low conversion loss and high LO-RF isolation characteristics of the MMIC modified resistive mixers are mainly attributed to the performance of the MHEMTs exhibiting a maximum transconductance of 654 mS/mm, a current gain cut-off frequency of 173 GHz and a maximum oscillation frequency of 271 GHz.

  • As the low power GPS signal is susceptible to interference, interference can seriously degrade the performance of GPS receiver. This paper designs a ANIEF(Adaptive Narrowband Interference Excision in Frequency domain) filter that removes narrow band interferences with low signal loss. This filter uses the pre-correlation technique and attempts to filter out the interference in the frequency domain. The interference excision performance of the designed filter is evaluated for various interferences using the ANIEF filter inserted GPS software receiver and the interference generator. Interferences considered in this paper are single-tone CWI(Continuous Wave Interference), multi-tones CWI, pulsed CWI, and swept CWI. The narrowband interference excision filter in frequency domain is very effective against various interferences and the strong interference with a simple structure. However, the signal power loss is unavoidable while transforming. In this paper, the hamming window and overlap technique are adopted to reduce the signal power loss. Finally, the interference excision performance and the reduced signal power loss of the ANIEF filter are shown.

  • Systematic experiments in $CH_4/Air$ counterflow diffusion flames diluted with He have been undertaken to study the oscillatory instability in which lateral flame size was less than burner nozzle diameter and thus lateral heat loss could be remarkable at low global strain rate. The oscillatory instability arises for Lewis numbers greater than unity and occurs near extinction condition. The oscillation is the direct outcome from the advancing and retreating edge flame. The dynamic behaviors of extinction in this configuration can be classified into three modes; growing, harmonic and decaying oscillation mode near extinction. As the global strain rate decreases, the amplitude of the oscillation becomes larger. This is caused by the increase of lateral heat loss which can be confirmed by the reduction of lateral flame size. Oscillatory edge flame instabilities at low global strain rate are shown to be closely associated with not only Lewis number but also heat loss (radiation and lateral heat loss).

  • Experiments in low strain rate methane-air counterflow diffusion flames diluted with $CO_2$ have been conducted to investigate the flame extinction behavior and edge flame oscillation in which flame length is less than the burner diameter and thus lateral conductive heat loss in addition to radiative loss could be remarkable at low global strain rates. The critical mole fraction at flame extinction is examined in terms of velocity ratio and global strain rate. It is seen that flame length is closely relevant to lateral heat loss, and this sheets flame extinction and edge flame oscillation considerably. Lateral heat loss causes flame oscillation even at fuel Lewis number less than unity. Edge flame oscillations are categorized into three: a growing-, a harmonic- and a decaying-oscillation mode. Onset conditions of the edge flame oscillation and the relevant modes are examined with global strain rate and $CO_2$ mole fraction in fuel stream. A flame stability map based on the flame oscillation modes is also provided at low strain rate flames.

  • In this paper, we have presented techniques to reduce the splicing loss between standard single mode fiber and high ${\Delta}$ single mode fiber based on the mode expanding and mode evolution induced by thermal treatment of the fibers. The experimental results show that mechanical splicing loss can be reduced from 2.3 dB to 0.1 dB through proper thermal treatment of the high ${\Delta}$ fiber. Meanwhile, we achieved $0.2{\sim}0.4dB$ of low splicing loss between two fibers by heating the splicing region using electric arcing or an oxygen flame.

  • Silicone oils used insulating substances exhibit the both of organic and inorganic properties, and it has many superior characteristics such as the high thermal resistance and low thermal oxidation level when compared to other insulation oils. In order to investigate the dielectric loss due to the increase of viscosity, silicone oils of viscosity 1, 2, 5[cSt] had been chosen as the specimen and experiment has been performed in the temperature range of -70[.deg. C] - 65[.deg. C] and frequency range of 30 - 1*10$\^$5/[Hz]. As a result, the linear decrease of loss at low frequency region in high temperature was due to the influence of applying frequency, whereas the increase of loss at high frequency region was contributed by electrode's resistance. And increasing viscosity, the activation energy increased from 3.77[kcal/mole] to 7.21[kcal/mole]. The dipole moment of specimen was become clear 1.48 - 2.26[debyel in high temperature region(5 - 65[.deg. C]) and 1.05 - 1.80[debye] in low temperature region (-70 - -25[.deg. C])respectively.

  • We apply a "sliding-window" Maximum Likelihood(ML) estimator to estimate traffic parameters On-Off source and develop a method for estimating stochastic predicted individual cell arrival rates. Based on these results, we propose a simple Connection Admission Control(CAC)scheme for delay sensitive services in broadband onboard packet switching satellite systems. The algorithms are motivated by the limited onboard satellite buffer, the large propagation delay, and low computational capabilities inherent in satellite communication systems. We develop an algorithm using the predicted individual cell loss ratio instead of using steady state cell loss ratios. We demonstrate the CAC benefits of this approach over using steady state cell loss ratios as well as predicted total cell loss ratios. We also derive the predictive saturation probability and the predictive cell loss ratio and use them to control the total number of connections. Predictive congestion control mechanisms allow a satellite network to operate in the optimum region of low delay and high throughput. This is different from the traditional reactive congestion control mechanism that allows the network to recover from the congested state. Numerical and simulation results obtained suggest that the proposed predictive scheme is a promising approach for real time CAC.

  • The dynamic behaviors of counterflow non-premixed flame have been investigated experimentally to study effects of heat losses on edge flame oscillation, which result from the advancing and retreating edge flame motion of outer flame edge at low strain rate flame. For low strain rate flame, lateral conduction heat loss in addition to radiation heat loss could be more remarkable than the others. Oscillatory instabilities appear at fuel Lewis number greater than unity. But excessive lateral conduction heat loss causes edge flame instability even at fuel Lewis number less than unity. The dramatic change of burner diameters in which flame length is an indicator of lateral conduction heat loss was applied to examine the onset condition of edge flame oscillation and flame oscillation modes. Especially, extinction behaviors quite different from the previous study were observed.

  • Recently, new trend in telecommunication device is to apply low voltage, about 3.3V-1.5V. However, it is undesirable in view of high efficiency and power desity which is the most important requirement in the distributed power system. Rectification loss in the output stage in on-board converter for distributed power system are constrained to obtain high efficience at low output voltage power suppies. This paper is investigated conduction power loss in synchronouss rectifier with a parallel -connected Schottky Barrier Diode(SBD). Conduction losses are calculated for both MOSFET and SBD respectively. The SBD conduction power loss dissipates more than the MOSFET rectifier conduction power loss.

  • The mean streamline analysis using the empirical loss correlations has been developed for performance prediction of industrial mixed-flow fan impellers in the present study. New simple, but effective, models for the additional Euler input work characteristic and an internal recirculation loss due to internal flow reversal under the low flowrate conditions are proposed in this paper. Comparison of overall performance predictions with six sets of test data of mixed-flow fans is accomplished to demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed models. Predicted performance curves by the present set of loss models agree fairly well with experimental data for a variety of mixed-flow fan impellers over the entire operating conditions. The prediction method presented herein can be used efficiently in the conceptual design phase of mixed-flow fan impellers.
