  • Recently, there has been a serious effort to design a wing in ground effect (WIG) craft. Vehicles of this type might use low aspect ratio wings defined as those with smaller than 3. Design and prediction techniques for fixed wings of relatively large aspect ratio are reasonably well developed. However, Aerodynamic problems related to vortex lift on wings of low aspect ratio have made it difficult to use existing techniques. In this work, we firstly focus on understanding aerodynamic characteristics of low aspect ratio wings and comparing the results from experimental measurements and currently available numerical predictions for both inviscid and viscous flows. Second, we apply an improved numerical method, "B-spline based high panel method with wake roll-up modeling", to the same problem.

  • The past Korean Bridge Design Specifications have no limitation on the amount of lap splices of longitudinal bars in the plastic hinge zone of piers. A majority of bridge piers which have been non-seismically designed might have some lap splices in plastic hinge zone. Also a number of those piers in Korea have a low aspect ratio(height/section area). So, some problems such as low ductility behavior may happen. In this study, the real pier which was non-seismically designed and has a low aspect ratio was selected for the quasi-static tests. Two groups of full scaled RC pier models of which aspect ratios are about 2.26 and about 2.67 were fabricated. And then, quasi-static tests according to the drift level history method were implemented. From the test results, the failure of these test specimens have been shown in the complex shear-flexural or shear modes. The low aspect ratio and the lap splice have largely influenced on the seismic performance of bridge piers.

  • In a low aspect ratio (LAR) tokamak reactor with a superconducting toroidal field (TF) coil, the radial build of TF coil and the shield play a key role in determining the size of a reactor. For self-consistent determination of the reactor components and physics parameters, a system analysis code is coupled with one-dimensional radiation transport code. Conceptual design study of a compact superconducting LAR tokamak reactor with aspect ratio less than 2.5 was conducted and the optimum radial build was identified. It is shown that the use of an improved shielding material and high temperature superconducting magnets with high critical current density opens up the possibility of a fusion power plant with compact size and small re-circulating power simultaneously at low aspect ratio, and that by using an inboard neutron reflector instead of breeding blanket, tritium self-sufficiency is possible with outboard blanket only and thus compact sized reactor is viable.

  • The front transparent conductive oxide (TCO) films must exhibit good transparency, low resistivity and excellent light scattering properties for high efficiency amorphous silicon (a-Si) thin film solar cells. The light trapping phenomenon is limited due to non-uniform and low aspect ratio of the textured glass [1]. We present the low cost electrochemically deposited uniform zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods with various aspect ratios for a-Si thin film solar cells. Since the major drawback of the electrochemically deposited ZnO nanorods was the high sheet resistance and low transmittance that was overcome by depositing the RF magnetron sputtered AZO films as a seed layer with various thicknesses [2]. The length and diameters of the ZnO nanorods was controlled by varying the deposition conditions. The length of ZnO nanorods were varied from 400 nm to $2{\mu}m$ while diameter was kept higher than 200 nm to obtain different aspect ratios. The uniform ZnO nanorods showed higher haze ratio as compared to the commercially available FTO films. We also observed that the scattering in the longer wavelength region was favored for the high aspect ratio of ZnO nanorods and much higher aspect ratios degraded the light scattering phenomenon. Therefore, we proposed our low cost and uniform ZnO nanorods for the high efficiency of thin film solar cells.

  • The measurement of ultra low aspect ratio fluid film thickness is very crucial technique both for the verification of lubrication media characteristics and for the clearance design in many precision components such as MEMS, precision bearings and other slideways. Many technologies are applied to the measurement of ultra low aspect ratio fluid film thickness (i.e. elastohydrodynamic lubrication film thickness). In particular, in-situ optical interferometric method has many advantages in making the actual contact behaviors realized with the experimental apparatus. This measurement method also does the monitoring of the surface defects and fractures happening during the contact behavior, which are delicately influenced by the surface conditions such as load, velocity, lubricant media as well as surface roughness. Careful selection of incident lights greatly enhances the fringe resolutions up to $\~1.0$ nanometer scale with digital image processing technology. In this work, it is found that coaxial aligning trichromatic incident light filtering system developed by the author can provide much finer resolution of ultra low aspect ratio fluid film thickness than monochromatic or dichromatic incident lights, because it has much more spectrums of color components to be discriminated according the variations of film thickness. For the measured interferometric images of ultra low aspect ratio fluid film thickness it is shown how the film thickness is finely digitalized and measured in nanometer scale with digital image processing technology and space layer method. The developed measurement system can make it possible to visualize the contact deformations and possible fractures of contacting surface under the repeated loading condition.

  • A laboratory experiment is conducted is to investigate the behaviour of a low-mass-ratio and high aspect ratio flexible cylinder under vortex-induced vibration (VIV). A flexible cylinder with aspect ratio of 100 and mass ratio of 1.17 is towed horizontally to generate uniform flow profile. The range of Reynolds number is from 1380 to 13800. Vibration amplitude, in-line and cross-flow frequency response, amplitude trajectory, mean tension variation and hydrodynamic force coefficients are analyzed based on the measurement from strain gauges, load cell and CCD camera. Experimental results indicate that broad-banded lock-in region is found for the cylinder with a small Strouhal number. The frequency switches in the present study indicates the change of the VIV phenomenon. The hydrodynamic force responses provide more understanding on the VIV of a low mass ratio cylinder.

  • The aspect ratio of a hole is defined as the ratio of the thickness to the diameter of the sheet metal. Most holes in the sheet metal industry are made by piercing. However, for thick sheets, which have an aspect ratio greater than 2, a machining process like drilling instead of piercing is usually used to make holes. In the current study, piercing, which is a shearing process, is evaluated to punch a hole with a high aspect ratio by using a newly designed die set-up. The piercing die was manufactured to prevent the punch from buckling and also to improve the alignment between the die components. An aluminum alloy sheet was selected for the experiments. The influence of several process parameters such as sheet thickness, clearance and stripping force were investigated. Experimentally, a hole with an aspect ratio of 5 was pierced. The resulting hole had a clean surface and the dimensional accuracy of pierced hole was considerably improved with decreasing clearance between punch and die. It is also shown that the larger penetration depth of the effective sheared surface can be achieved for high aspect ratio piercing relative to conventional piercing with a low aspect ratio.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate experimentally the effects of aspect ratio of polyethylene fiber on the compressive strength and tensile behavior of alkali-activated cementless composite. Two mixtures were determined according to aspect ratio values of polyethylene fibers, and the compressive strength and tension tests were performed. Test results showed that the effect of aspect ratio of fiber on the compressive strength was negligible and the tensile strength, ductility, and number of cracks of the mixture including the fiber with high aspect ratio were higher than those of the mixture including the fiber with low aspect ratio. On the other hand, the crack spacing and crack width were low in the mixture including the fiber with high aspect ratio.

  • Studies of the numerical characteristics of implicit upwind schemes, such as upwind ADI, Line Gauss-Seidel(LGS) and Point Gauss-Seidel(LU) algorithms, for preconditioned Navier-Stokes equations ate performed. All the algorithms are expressed in approximate factorization form and Von Neumann stability analysis and convergence studies are made. Preconditioning is applied for efficient convergence at low Mach numbers and low Reynolds numbers. For high aspect ratio computations, the ADI and LGS algorithms show efficient and uniform convergence up to moderate aspect ratio if we adopt viscous preconditioning based on min- CFL/max- VNN time-step definition. The LU algorithm, on the other hand, shows serious deterioration in convergence rate as the grid aspect ratio increases. Computations for practical applications also verify these results.

  • The present paper is devoted to the modeling based on an averaging approach for microchannel heat sinks. Firstly, analytic solutions for velocity and temperature distributions for low-aspect-ratio microchannel heat sinks are presented by using the averaging approach. When the aspect ratio of the microchannel is smaller than 1, analytic solutions accurately evaluate thermal resistances of heat sinks while the previous model cannot predict thermal resistances. Secondly, asymptotic solutions for velocity and temperature distributions at low-aspect-ratio limit and at high-aspect-ratio limit are presented by using the scale analysis. Asymptotic solutions are very simple, but shown to predict thermal resistances accurately.
