  • This study explored the participant roles and the cross-sectional and longitudinal relationships between interpersonal behavior characteristics and bullying/victimization. The subjects were 4th and 5th grade children and instruments were the Participant Roles Scale, Self-Report Coping Scale, Teenage Inventory of Social Skills, and Social Anxiety/Avoidance. They were contacted again one year later. In the distribution of participant roles at Time 1, defender of the victim was highest, then outsider; at Time 2 outsider was the highest and then defender. There was a tendency of gender difference in distribution of participant roles only at Time 1. Males were more in the group of reinforcer; females were more in the group of defender and victim. There were high positive correlations among bully/reinforcer/assistant scores. In the concurrent view, children who used approach coping strategies and showed higher social skills were more likely to be defender. Children who had lower social skills and higher social anxiety and social avoidance were more likely to be victim. In the longitudinal view, children who had developed higher social skills were more likely to be defender. Children who had employed less approach coping strategies and had showed lower social skills and higher social avoidance were more likely to be victim.

  • This study investigated the longitudinal effects of family risk factors, parent-child relationships, and language abilities of children in low-income families in terms of both school adjustment and academic performance. The subjects were 176 children aged 5 to 7 and their mothers. They participated in follow up studies over the next 3 years. The children were tested using the Wechsler Intelligence Scales and language tests; and classroom teachers rated their levels of both school adjustment and academic performance. Mothers reported parent-child relationships, maternal depression, and family economic resources. Data were analyzed using Pearson's correlation, and structural equation modeling (SEM). Our results indicated that there were direct effects of language abilities, and indirect effects of parent-child relationships and maternal depression upon children's school adjustment and academic performance. It was also revealed that language abilities had a mediating effect between parent-child relationship and school adjustment/ academic performance.

  • Various methodologies for the genetic analysis of longitudinal data have been proposed and applied to data from large-scale genome-wide association studies (GWAS) to identify single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with traits of interest and to detect SNP-time interactions. We recently proposed a grid-based Bayesian mixed model for longitudinal genetic data and showed that our Bayesian method increased the statistical power compared to the corresponding univariate method and well detected SNP-time interactions. In this paper, we further analyze longitudinal obesity-related traits such as body mass index, hip circumference, waist circumference, and waist-hip ratio from Korea Association Resource data to evaluate the proposed Bayesian method. We first conducted GWAS analyses of cross-sectional traits and combined the results of GWAS analyses through a meta-analysis based on a trajectory model and a random-effects model. We then applied our Bayesian method to a subset of SNPs selected by meta-analysis to further discover SNPs associated with traits of interest and SNP-time interactions. The proposed Bayesian method identified several novel SNPs associated with longitudinal obesity-related traits, and almost 25% of the identified SNPs had significant p-values for SNP-time interactions.

  • Formation of longitudinally wave-like plasma density structure in the low-latitude F region is now a well-known phenomenon from the extensive studies in recent years. Observations of plasma density from multiple satellites have shown that the locations of the crests of the plasma density that are seen to be stationary during daytime are shifted after sunset. This phenomenon has been understood to be caused by eastward drift of the ionosphere at night. However, the eastward drift velocity of the ionosphere after sunset is not sufficiently large enough to explain the day-night difference in the longitudinal density structure. The just after sunset and the nighttime ionospheric morphologymay be affected by this drift after sunset. In this study, we will investigate the temporal variation of the phase of the longitudinal density structure and vertical plasma drift by analyzing the ROCSAT-1, TIMED/GUVI, and DMSP data and verify the role of the vertical drift after sunset in the change of the phase of the longitudinal density structure.

  • Conoscopic holography, which consists of two circular polarizers and an uniaxial crystal, is incoherent holographic technology for three-dimensional display and non-contact diagnosis. In this paper, we derive the longitudinal and lateral intensities from point-source hologram made by conoscopic holography. Also, the longitudinal and lateral resolutions of conoscopic holography will be obtained from the longitudinal and lateral intensities, respectively, according to Rayleigh criterion.

  • This paper represents numerical computations of the interaction between the longitudinal vortex and a flat plate 3-D turbulent boundary layer. In the present study, the main interest is in the behavior of longitudinal vortices introduced in turbulent boundary layers. The flow field behind vortex generator is modeled by the information that is available from studies on the delta winglet. Also, the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stoke equations for three-dimensional turbulent flows, together with a two-layer turbulence model to resolve the near-wall flow, is solved by the method of pseudo compressibility. The present results show that the boundary layer is thinned in the regions where the secondary flow is directed toward the wall and thickened where it is directed away from the wall, and have a good agreement with the experimental data.

  • Because steel girder bridge has big slenderness ratio, buckling is very important in design. Local buckling of plate girders having two longitudinal stiffeners in different positions under various load conditions is investigated. Various parametric study according to the change of web height, transverse stiffeners and load conditions are examined. These parametric studies are performed by numerical simulation utilizing finite element method. The objective of this study is to present the rational reinforcement location of two longitudinal stiffeners. The results of analysis are compared to that recommended by korean specifications for road bridges(2003).

  • In recent years, Korean medical schools have shown a growing interest in the longitudinal integrated clerkship (LIC) as a means of improving clinical education. Some overseas medical schools have tried the LIC since the 1970s. In the 1990s, several universities in the United States, Canada, and Australia introduced LICs. A variety of studies have confirmed positive results of the LIC. Traditional block-rotation is a discipline-based, inpatient-centered practice. Instead, under the LIC system, a medical student responsible for a panel of longitudinal patients observes developments of their diseases, serving several departments simultaneously. Overseas medical schools have different LIC models depending on their affiliate hospitals' sizes and characteristics. The purpose of this study is to introduce LIC practices in Harvard Medical School and University of California San Francisco, which could be applied by Korean medical schools. This paper also aims to find out the strategies that have been able to help the two US medical schools implement the LIC successfully.

  • The purpose of this study is to look into the necessity of strengthening the knowledge base about longitudinal and latitudinal coordinate system in secondary educational curriculum. GPS based location service increases the use of longitude and latitude coordinate system. And many developed countries including USA and Japan have already included this contents in secondary education curriculum. But the secondary school Curriculum of Korea does not include the detailed contents regarding longitudinal and latitudinal coordinate system theory, and as a result the level of Korean students knowledge on this subject is low. The frequency of appearing of the information related to longitudinal and latitudinal coordinate systems in newspaper articles in Korea has been steadily increasing since after 2000. And a lot of articles appearing in newspapers provide the location information in the form of longitude and latitude coordinates, so the readers would be able to apply that. It was found out that the situation in schools is developed good enough for the use of spatial information system based upon the longitudinal and latitudinal coordinate system. The conclusion is that geography education in Korea needs systematical implementation of the knowledge base of longitudinal and latitudinal coordinate system.

  • The purposes of this study were to verify the longitudinal mediating effects of work-family balance on the relationship of role recognition in the family, marital intimacy and job satisfaction of married women, and to introduce longitudinal mediating effects by using latent growth curve modeling and autoregressive cross-lagged modeling. The subjects were married women from the third year data of the Korean Longitudinal Survey of Women and Family. Structural equational models were conducted with Amos ver. 21.0. The major findings are as follows. First, the result of the longitudinal mediating effects of latent growth modeling is the rate of change of work-family balance mediated between the rate of change of role recognition in the family and the rate of change of job satisfaction, and the rate of change of work-family balance mediated between the rate of change of marital intimacy and the rate of change of job satisfaction. Second, when using the autoregressive cross-lagged modeling, the more role recognition and marital intimacy of third year were the more work-family balance of fourth year, job satisfaction of fifth year. In both models, work-family balance mediated between role recognition in the family, marital intimacy and job satisfaction. Therefore, through this study, mediating effects of work-family balance can be found that there was a longitudinal effects.
