  • The ductility of circular hollow reinforced concrete columns with one layer of longitudinal and spiral reinforcement placed near the outside face of the section and the steel tube placed on the inside face of the section is investigated. Such hollow sections are confined through the wall thickness since the steel tube is placed. The results of analytical moment-curvature analyses for such hollow sections are compared with those for the circular section with the sane diameter. In this study, moment-curvature analyses are conducted with Mandel's confined concrete stress-strain relationship in which the effect of confinement is to increase the compression strength and ultimate strain of concrete. The moment-curvature analyses confirmed that the ductility is primarily influenced on the ultimate strain. The variables influenced on the ultimate strain is the ratio and yield strength of confining reinforcement and the compression strength for confined concrete. From this ultimate strain - the transverse reinforcement ratio relationship, the transverse reinforcement ratio for circular hollow reinforced columns with confinement is proposed. The proposed transverse reinforcement ratio is confirmed by experimental results.

  • With increasing use of high-strength concrete tied columns in structural engineering, it becomes necessary to examine the applicability of related sections of the current design codes. This experimental study was conducted to investigate the behavior of eccentrically loaded high-strength concrete columns. Column specimens with concrete strength 234, 437, 703kgf/㎠ were tested under monotonically increasing eccentric compression. The test parameters included the longitudinal reinforcement ratio, eccentric distance and concrete compressive strength. The analytical results obtained from the stress-strain relationship and the ACI's equivalent rectangular stress block are compared with experimental test results.

  • This paper presents the results of a parametric study on the behavior of tunnel face reinforced with horizontal pipes. A series of reduced-scale model tests was carried out to in an attempt to verify previously performed three-dimensional numerical modeling and to investigate effects of reinforcement layout on the tunnel face deformation behavior The results of model tests indicate that the tunnel face deformation can significantly reduced by pre-reinforcing the tunnel face with longitudinal members and thus enhancing the tunnel stability. In addition, the model tests results compare fairly well with those from the previously performed three-dimensional finite element analysis. Therefore, a properly calibrated three dimensional model may effectively be used in the study of tunnel face reinforcing technique.

  • In this paper, the shear resistance behaviour of reinforced concrete (RC) dapped end beams is investigated by 24 tests until failure load. The main parameters considered are the dapped end height, the type and effective range to provided the stirrups and the bent form of the longitudinal reinforcement. The failure behaviour of dapped end beams is presented and some conclusions are given. Inclined stirrups and longitudinal bent reinforcement have more influence on the shear capacity than vertical stirrups. Additionally, the shear mechanism of dapped end beams is analysed. Relatively simple semi-empirical equations for shear strength have been derived based on the results of 22 dapped end beams. The predicted results are in close agreement with the experimental ones. Finally, some design suggestions for the ultimate shear strength of dapped end beams are presented.

  • Although many structures. with high strength concrete have been recently constructed, the flexural behavior of reinforced and prestressed concrete beams with high strength concrete is not exactly defined. This paper presents an experimental study on the flexural strength of the high strength concrete beams. Five large scale beams simply supported were tested and measured. Each beam was loaded by two symmetrical concentrated loads applied at 1.25m from the center of span. The concrete strength, the prestressed force and longitudinal tensile reinforcement ratio vary from beam to beam. From the experimental tests, the flexural strength from tests is larger than the nominal flexural strength of codes. Moreover, the initial crack-load is affected by the prestressed force and the crack width and spacing are controlled by the longitudinal tensile reinforcement ratio.

  • An experimental investigation was conducted to compare the shear strength of full-scale beams constructed with chemically-based, self-consolidating concrete (SCC) with conventional concrete (CC). This experimental program consisted of 16 rectangular beams (12 without shear reinforcing and 4 with shear reinforcing in the form of stirrups), 8 beams for each mix design. Additionally, three different longitudinal reinforcement ratios were evaluated within the test matrix. The beam specimens were tested under a simply supported four-point condition. The experimental shear strengths of the beams were compared with both the shear provisions of selected standards (U.S., Australia, Canada, Europe, and Japan) and a shear database of CC specimens. This comparison indicates that chemically-based SCC beams possess comparable shear strength as CC beams.

  • The present paper reviews the shear design (of reinforced concrete beam) provisions of four different national codes and proposes a new but simplified shear strength empirical expression, incorporating variables such as compressive strength of concrete, percentage of longitudinal and vertical steel/s, depth of beam in terms of shear span-to-depth ratio, for reinforced concrete (RC) beams without shear reinforcement. The expression is based on the experimental investigation on RC beams without shear reinforcement. Further, the comparisons of shear design provisions of four National codes viz.: (i) IS 456-2000, (iii) BS 8110-1997, (iv) ACI 318-2002 (v) EuroCode-2-2002 and the proposed expression for the prediction of shear capacity of normal beam/s, have been made by solving a numerical example. The results of the numerical example worked out suggest that there is need for revision in the shear design procedure of different codes. Also, the proposed expression is less conservative among the IS, BS & Eurocode.

  • Unlike columns having lap-spliced longitudinal bars in plastic hinge regions columns having 50% of lap-spliced bars were reported to have good ductilities relatively. But the effect of transverse reinforcements to deformability is not clearly confirmed. In this study scale models with different confinements were tested under various loading conditions. It was confirmed that deformability was increased with increase of transverse reinforcement ratio regardless of loading conditions and 75% of confinement yielded the satisfactory deformability.

  • Residual deformation of high-speed railway bridge piers is cumulative under repeated earthquakes, and influences the safety and ride comfort of high-speed trains. This paper investigates the effects of the peak ground acceleration, longitudinal reinforcement ratio, and axial compression ratio on the cumulative deformation through finite element analysis. A simply-supported beam bridge pier model is established using nonlinear beam-column elements in OpenSees, and validated against a shaking table test. Repeated earthquakes were input in the model. The results show that the cumulative deformation of the bridge piers under repeated earthquakes increases with the peak ground acceleration and the axial compression ratio, and decreases with the longitudinal reinforcement ratio.
