Simplified analysis of creep for preloaded reconstituted soft alluvial soil from Famagusta Bay

  • Preloading of soft clays is a common ground stabilization method for improvement of compressibility and the undrained shear strength. The waiting period under preload is a primary design criterion controlling the degree of improvement obtained. Upon unloading the overconsolidation attained with respect to actual loads defines the long term performance. This paper presents a laboratory study for investigation of creep behavior of Famagusta Bay alluvial soft soil preloaded under various effective stresses for analysis of long term performance based on the degree of overconsolidation. Traditional one-dimensional consolidation tests as well as modified creep tests are performed on reconstituted soft specimens. Compressibility parameters are precisely backcalculated using one dimensional consolidation theory and the coefficient of creep is determined using the traditional Cassagrande method as well as two modified methods based on log cycles of time and the inflection of the creep curve. The test results indicated that the long term creep can be successfully predicted considering the proposed method. The creep coefficients derived as part of this method can also be related to the recompression index (recompression index, swelling index) considering the results of the testing method adopted in this study.

도로포장 보수재 활용 가능성 평가를 위한 알칼리 활성 시멘트 모르타르 기초연구 (Fundamental Study of Alkali Activated Cement Mortar for Evaluating Applicability of Partial-Depth Repair)

  • PURPOSES : This study is to evaluate the feasibility of using the alkali activated cement concrete for application of partial-depth repair in pavement. METHODS : This study analyzes the compressive strength of alkali activated cement mortar based on the changes in the amount/type/composition of binder(portland cement, fly ash, slag) and activator(NaOH, $Na_2SiO_3$, $Na_2CO_3$, $Na_2SO_4$). The mixture design is divided in case I of adding one kind-activator and case II of adding two kind-activators. RESULTS : The results of case I show that $Na_2SO_4$ based mixture has superior the long-term strength when compared to other mixtures, and that $Na_2CO_3$ based mixture has superior the early strength when compared to other mixtures. But the mixtures of case I is difficult to apply in the material for early-opening-to-traffic, because the strength of all mixtures isn't meet the criterion of traffic-opening. The results of case II show that NaOH-$Na_2SiO_3$ based mixtures has superior the early/long-term strength when compared to NaOH-$Na_2SiO_3$ based mixtures. In particular, the NaOH-$Na_2SiO_3$ based some mixtures turned out to pass the reference strength(1-day) of 21MPa as required for traffic-opening. CONCLUSIONS : With these results, it could be concluded that NaOH-$Na_2SiO_3$ based mixtures can be used as the material of pavement repair.

Assessing the long-term durability and degradation of rocks under freezing-thawing cycles

  • In this research, the degradation rate of physical properties of the Angouran pit bedrock (calc-schist) is first investigated under the specific numbers of freeze-thaw (F-T) cycles. Then, the durability of calc-schist specimens against the F-T cycle number (N) is examined considering the mechanical parameters, and using the decay function and half-time techniques. For this purpose, point load strength (IS(50)), second durability index (Id2), Brazilian tensile strength (BTS), and compressive (VP) and shear (VS) wave velocities of calc-schist specimens are measured after 0, 7, 15, 40, and 75 N. For comparing the degradation rate of mechanical properties of available rock types on the Angouran mine walls, these tests are also carried out on the limestone and amphibolite schist specimens beside the calc-schist. According to test results, the exponential regression models are developed between the mechanical parameters of rock specimen's and N variable. Also, the long-term durability of each rock type versus N is studied using the decay function and half-time techniques. Results indicated that the degradation rate differs for the above rock types in which amphibolite schist and calc-schist specimens have the highest and least resistance against the N, respectively. The obtained results from this study can play a key role in the optimal design of the mine's final walls.

풍력 터빈 허브의 피로강도 평가 (Fatigue Strength Evaluation of Wind Turbine Hub)

  • A wind turbine obtains its power input by converting the force of the wind into a torque (turning force) acting on the rotor blades. The amount of energy which the wind transfers to the rotor depends on the density of the air, the rotor area, and the wind speed. Because it has long term operating life and very complex load condition, the fatigue strength of each component must be considered. In this paper, we calculated the load condition by wind using a combined blade elemental theory and a FEM based analytical approach was use to evaluate the fatigue strength of a Hub of wind turbine. The effect of tensile mean stress was taken into account by the modified Goodman diagram. Using this approaches, we evaluated the fatigue strength of hub and main shaft and improved the design.

교량 지진격리받침의 극한특성에 대한 실험적 고찰 (An Experimental Study on the Characteristics of Seismic Isolators under Extreme Conditions)

  • 교량의 내진설계에 적용되는 지진격리받침은 초창기 외국제품 수입에서 시작하여 현재는 국내업체의 자체 생산도 가능한 단계에 이르렀다고 할 수 있지만 지진격리받침의 극한적 조건에서의 특성에 대한 고찰은 거의 이루어지지 않고 있다. 본 연구에서는 다양한 지진격리받침 중에서도 많은 적용 사례가 있는 적층고무형태를 대상으로 하여 지진격리받침이 전단수평력을 받아 파괴에 이르는 전단파괴, 지진격리받침의 장기적 특성변화를 유발하는 노화, 크리프가 지진격리받침의 특성에 미치는 영향에 대하여 평가하였다. 실험을 통한 실제적인 고찰이 이루어질 수 있도록 적층고무형 지진격리받침을 실제로 제작하였고 설계수직하중을 재하한 상태에서 전단파괴에 이르도록 전단변위를 가하였다. 그리고 고무재료의 노화에 의한 특성과 영향을 분석하고자 노화촉진을 위한 고온 환경에 지진격리받침을 일정시간 노출시킨 뒤 노출 이전에 측정한 특성에 비해 얼마나 변화하였는지 비교 분석하였다. 아울러 고정된 수직하중을 받는 상태에서 고무재료의 크리프 발생으로 지진격리받침의 높이가 영구적으로 변화 할 수 있는데 받침의 수명을 고려하여 60년 후의 크리프량을 추정하였다.

연속교 프리캐스트 바닥판의 교축방향 프리스트레스 설계 (Design of Longitudinal Prestress of Precast Decks in Continuous Bridges)

  • Serviceability resign is required to control the cracking at the joint of precast decks having longitudinal prestress in continuous composite bridges. Especially, details of twin girder bridges are complex not only due to main reinforcements and transverse prestress for the resign of long-span concrete slabs but also due to shear pockets for obtaining the composite action. This paper suggests the design guidelines for the magnitude of the effective prestress and for the selection of filling materials and their requirements in order to use precast decks for twin-girder continuous composite bridges. The necessary initial prestress was also evaluated through the long-term behavior analysis. From the analysis, existing design examples were revised and their effectiveness was estimated. When a filling material having bonding strength higher than the requirement is used in the region of high negative moment, uniform configuration of longitudinal prestressing steels along the whole span length of continuous composite bridges can be achieved resulting in simplification of details and enhancement of the construction costs.

접힘홈이 형성된 띠형 섬유보강재의 크리프 감소계수 평가 (Evaluation of Creep Reduction Factor for Geosynthetic Strip Reinforcement with Folding Grooves)

  • 본 연구에서는 접힘홈이 형성된 띠형 섬유보강재를 대상으로, 보강재 종류 및 크리프시험 방법에 따른 크리프특성을 분석하고 크리프 감소계수를 평가하기 위하여 인장강도가 다른 6종류의 띠형 섬유보강재(인장강도 15kN, 25kN, 35kN, 50kN, 70kN, 90kN)에 대한 가속 크리프시험(SIM)을 수행하였다. 또한, 특히 활용 빈도가 높은 인장강도 25kN인 띠형 섬유보강재에 대해서는 장기 크리프시험을 동시에 수행하여 가속 크리프시험 결과와 비교, 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 보강재의 설계수명이 증가할수록 크리프 감소계수가 증가하고, 동일한 소재와 제조방법을 사용한 띠형 섬유보강재는 인장강도가 서로 다르더라도 설계수명에 따라 거의 유사한 크리프 감소계수값을 보여주며, 장기 및 가속 크리프시험 데이터를 모두 사용한 경우의 크리프 감소계수는 장기 크리프시험 데이터만 사용한 경우보다 설계수명 50년~100년을 고려하면 크리프 감소계수가 5.9%~7.1% 정도 작게 평가됨을 알 수 있었다.

  • Recently, CV, CNCV, CNCV-W cable are used to transmit and distribute electric power. And a lot of researchers put more effort to realize high performance. The dielectric breakdown strength characteristic is a standard to design insulators. Examination of that is a main factor to determine long term insulation performance, which is used to diagnose Insulation deterioration. In this paper, we prepared XLPE, XLPE/nano-filler, LDPE/nano-filler for comparing each of the dielectric breakdown strength characteristics.

Sustainable concrete mix design for a target strength and service life

  • Considering the well known environmental issues of cement manufacturing (direct and indirect levels of $CO_2$ emissions), clinker replacement by supplementary cementing materials (SCM) can be a very promising first step in reducing considerably the associated emissions. However, such a reduction is possible up to a particular level of SCM utilization, influenced by the rate of its pozzolanic reaction. In this study a (4-step) structured methodology is proposed in order to be able to further adjust the concrete mix design of a particular SCM, in achieving additional reduction of the associated levels of $CO_2$ emissions and being at the same time accepted from a derived concrete strength and service life point of view. On this note, the aim of this study is twofold. To evaluate the environmental contribution of each concrete component and to provide the best possible mix design configuration, balanced between the principles of sustainability (low environmental cost) and durability (accepted concrete strength and service life ). It is shown that such a balance can be achieved, by utilising SCM by-products in the concrete mix, reducing in this way the fixed environmental emissions without compromising the long-term safety and durability of the structure.

  • PHC말뚝을 생산하는 17개 중소산업체의 품질 성능 검사 자료, 17개 중소산업체 및 6개 대기업 산업체의 장기허용압축하중 제원 표를 분석하였다. 현 단계의 국내 설계에서는 PHC말뚝의 장기허용압축하중의 평균 약 70% 수준을 반영하고 있고 품질이 우수함에도 불구하고 PHC말뚝의 장기허용압축하중에는 안전율 4.0을 적용하고 있다. 대부분의 품질 검사 기준은 KS F 4306에 명시되어 있다. 그러나 원심력으로 다져진 콘크리트 압축강도시험 기준은 KS F 2454에 명시되어 있다. 각 제조사의 품질 시험 자료를 분석한 결과 모든 항목에서 기준값 보다 높은 성능을 보였다. 따라서 PHC말뚝 설계 시 PHC말뚝의 지지력을 PHC말뚝의 허용연직압축하중의 최대값까지 사용할 수 있을 것으로 판단되었다.
