  • This study examines greenhouse gas reduction potentials in cement manufacturing industry of Korea. An energy system model in the MARKAL (MARKet ALlocation) modeling framework was used in order to identify appropriate energy technologies and to quantify their possible implications In terms of greenhouse gas reduction. The model is characterized as mathematical tool for the long term energy system analysis provides an useful informations on technical assessment. Four scenarios are developed that covers the ti me span from 2000 to 2020. Being technology as a fundamental driving factor of the evolution of energy systems, it is essential to study the basic mechanisms of technological change and its role in developing more efficient, productive and clean energy systems. For this reasons, the learning curves on technologies for greenhouse gas reduction is specially considered. The analysis in this study shows that it is not easy to mitigate greenhouse gas with low cost in cement manufacturing industry under the current cap and trade method of Kyoto protocol.

  • This study analyzed the major revision factors and revision contents for 'Construction-Standard-Production-Rate for Construction Works in 2018. Part 16. Pipe Laying Down and Connection" which was revised by the construction expense estimation standard's middle and long-term plans. The main reasons for the revision was analyzed to be unclear construction scope, limitations in applicable pipe material based on the facility type, labor force mainly composed of ordinary workers, limitations of labor force, and incomplete appropriation standard for the tool rent fee and equipment expenses. Through revision of factors, common items were newly established, organization was revised, the labor force was mainly composed of the technicians, and basis for appropriation of equipment expenses was arranged. In addition, through periodic revision, the appropriation standard for bend and special pipes was set. Consequently, more practical construction cost estimate standard is arranged through revision.

  • In this paper a series of developing process for an insulator which can be employed in overhead distribution lines, using polymeric composite materials, is introduced. In order to design an insulator for heavily polluted area, weathershed of alternating type was adopted, which could have longer leakage distance. Modified EVA was used as surface material which has good electrical and mechanical characteristics as well as superior chemical stability. FRP core was covered with above surface material through heat shrinking process. By standardization of each process, higher productivity and lower production cost could be ensured. The developed insulator has been put under various tests including long-term field test and artificial aging test and satisfactory results were obtained.

  • Railway construction needs vast soil investigation for its infrastructure foundation designs along the planned railway path to identify the design parameters for stability and serviceability checks. The soil investigation data are usually classified and grouped to decide design input parameters per each construction section and budget estimates. Deterministic design method which most civil engineer and practitioner are familiar with has a clear limitation in construction/maintenance budget control, and occasionally produced overdesigned or unsafe design problems. Instead of using a batch type analysis with predetermined input parameters, data population collected from site soil investigation and design load condition can be statistically estimated for the mean and variance to present the feature of data distribution and optimized with a best fitting probability function. Probabilistic approach using entire feature of design input data enables to predict the worst, best and most probable cases based on identified ranges of soil and load data, which will help railway designer select construction method to save the time and cost. This paper introduces two Monte Carlo simulations actually applied on estimation of retaining wall external stability and long term settlement of organic soil in soil investigation area for a recent high speed railway project.

  • Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are emitted as gases from certain solids or liquids. VOCs include a variety of chemicals, some of which may have short- and long-term adverse health effects. Current technologies for the treatment of VOC contaminated off-gasses are expensive to operate and more cost effective technologies are needed.(omitted)

  • This paper examines the achievements and limitations of housing assistance programs for low-income households. Korean public rental housing has been rapidly developing since 2000, and thereby achieved an increase in public rental housing stock, housing quality improvements, and the reduction of rent over-burden for low-income tenants. Despite some conflicting evidence, it appears that the provision of newly-built public rental housing has helped stabilize the prices of neighboring private rental housing units. But, as we are entering an era of one million long-term public rental housing units, we need to shift our focus from quantity-oriented provision to housing maintenance for tenants, and from cost-based rental housing to affordable rental housing and better access to rental housing for low-income tenants who are not beneficiaries of government assistance. Most of all, it is very important for local governments and the private sector to actively participate in the provision of public rental housing in order to ensure a stable rental housing market.

  • In this study, detailed assessment for durability performance were performed on the chloride protected concrete structures to investigate the effectiveness of chloride protection. And economical efficiency for the chloride protected concrete structures were studied by LCC(Life Cycle Cost) analysis. In the comparison result of the first section repair time, it was found that the chloride protected concrete structures was economical better than the non-protected concrete structures in the long term. According to the analysis result of the accumulated chloride concentration by used time and chloride ion concentration by depth, it can be seen that the permeation through time from chloride has increased two times in the chloride protected concrete structures.

  • The Korean National Photovoltaic Project was initiated in October 1989 to develop technologies for the generation of economically competitive electric power by photovoltaic systems. It consists of four stages through the year 2006 with technical goals and cost targets related with solar cells, balance of systems and system application. The objectives of the project are to utilize photovoltaic technology, to transfer developed technology to industries and end users by research activities and to diffuse photovoltaic systems by demonstration projects. This paper reviews long-term plan abd status of technology R&D, and markets of photovoltaics. Some activities designed to promote collaboration with foreign countries are also introduced.

  • Energy foundations and other thermo-active ground structure, energy wells, energy-slab, and pavement heating and cooling represent an innovative technology that contributes to environmental protection and provides substantial long-term cost savings and minimized maintenance. This paper focuses on earth-contact concrete elements that are already required for structural reasons, but which simultaneously work as heat exchangers. Pipes, energy slabs, filled with a heat carrier fluid are installed under conventional structural elements, forming the primary circuit of a geothermal energy system. The natural ground temperature is used as a heat source in winter and a heat sink in summer. The geothermal heat pump system with energy-slab represented very high heating and cooling performance due to the stability of EWT from energy slab. However, the performance of it seemed to be affected by the atmospheric air temperature.
