  • In order to reflect variability due to exposure factors as well as to assess uncertainty associated with cancer risk posed by airborne trace metals, a Monte Calro analysis has been made in this study. Input parameters for Monte Carlo analysis were developed or adjusted using body weight, lifetime, and exposure frequency of Koreans. Ambient distributions of toxic metals were founded to be lognormal distributions for most of them using goodness-of-fit tests. Thus, the 95% UCL and 95% LCL of carcinogenic metals were estimated by H-statistic method for lognormal distribution, respectively. The results of Monte Carlo analysis of 95% UCL showed that the 95th percentile risks for men and women were 1.2 and 1.1 times higher than an acceptable risk of 10$^{-5}$ , respectively. The probabilities which those risks exceed the acceptable risk were estimated to be 8% and 6%, respectively, while to be 95% and 94%, respectively on the basis of the minimum acceptable risk of 10$^{-6}$ , respectively. Approximately 90% of total cancer risk came from human carcinogens such as arsenic and hexavalent chromium. Therefore, it is necessary to properly manage both arsenic and hexavalent chromium emissions in the study area.

  • In this paper, a SAR-despeck1ing approach of adaptive iteration based a Bayesian model using the lognormal distribution for image intensity and a Gibbs random field (GRF) for image texture is proposed for noise removal of the images that are corrupted by multiplicative speckle noise. When the image intensity is logarithmically transformed, the speckle noise is approximately Gaussian additive noise, and it tends to a normal probability much faster than the intensity distribution. The MRF is incorporated into digital image analysis by viewing pixel types as states of molecules in a lattice-like physical system. The iterative approach based on MRF is very effective for the inner areas of regions in the observed scene, but may result in yielding false reconstruction around the boundaries due to using wrong information of adjacent regions with different characteristics. The proposed method suggests an adaptive approach using variable parameters depending on the location of reconstructed area, that is, how near to the boundary. The proximity of boundary is estimated by the statistics based on edge value, standard deviation, entropy, and the 4th moment of intensity distribution.

  • For the generalized gamma distribution, exact inferences about quantiles need many computations involving complicated numerical integrations. This paper suggests approximate confidence intervals which are easily obtained by considering the alternative location-scale model. Also, these intervals are very accurate even for small sample size. Approximate confidence intervals about quantiles in the lognormal distribution are also considered. With type 2 censoring data, approximate confidence intervals can also be obtained directly by the suggested methods.

  • Lee(2007) suggested the Point-Jacobian iteration MAP estimation(PJIMAP) for noise removal of the images that are corrupted by multiplicative speckle noise. It is to find a MAP estimation of noisy-free imagery based on a Bayesian model using the lognormal distribution for image intensity and an MRF for image texture. In this study, the MAP estimation is computed by the Point-Jacobian iteration using adaptive parameters. At each iteration, the parameters related to the Bayesian model are adaptively estimated using the updated information. The results of the proposed scheme were compared to them of PJIMAP with SAR simulation data generated by the Monte Carlo method. The experiments demonstrated an improvement in relaxing speckle noise and estimating noise-free intensity by using the adaptive parameters for the Ponit-Jacobian iteration.

  • Due to the non-uniform distribution of meso-structure, the diffusion of chloride ions in concrete show the characteristics of characteristics of randomness and fuzziness, which leads to the non-uniform distribution of chloride ions and the non-uniform corrosion of steel rebar in concrete. This phenomenon is supposed as the main reason causing the uncertainty of the bearing capacity deterioration of reinforced concrete structures. In order to analyze and predict the durability of reinforced concrete structures under chloride environment, the random features of chloride ions transport in concrete were studied in this research from in situ meso-structure of concrete. Based on X-ray CT technology, the spatial distribution of coarse aggregates and pores were recognized and extracted from a cylinder concrete specimen. In considering the influence of ITZ, the in situ mesostructure of concrete specimen was reconstructed to conduct a numerical simulation on the diffusion of chloride ions in concrete, which was verified through electronic microprobe technology. Then a stochastic study was performed to investigate the distribution of chloride ions concentration in space and time. The research indicates that the influence of coarse aggregate on chloride ions diffusion is the synthetic action of tortuosity and ITZ effect. The spatial distribution of coarse aggregates and pores is the main reason leading to the non-uniform distribution of chloride ions both in spatial and time scale. The chloride ions concentration under a certain time and the time under a certain concentration both satisfy the Lognormal distribution, which are accepted by Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and Chi-square test. This research provides an efficient method for obtain mass stochastic data from limited but representative samples, which lays a solid foundation for the investigation on the service properties of reinforced concrete structures.

  • Static strength and fatigue life scattering of glass fiber reinforced epoxy composite materials has been studied. Normal, lognormal, two-parameter and three-parameter Weibull distribution functions are used for strength and one-stress fatigue life distribution. The value of mean fatigue life is analysed using mean fatigue life, mean log fatigue life and expected value of 2 and 3-parameter Weibull distribution functions. Modification on non-statistical cumulative damage models is made in order to interpret the result of two-stress level fatigue life scattering. The comparison results show that 3-parameter Weibull distribution has better predictions in static strength and one-stress level fatigue life distributions. However, no advantage of 3-parameter Weibll distribution is found over 2-parameter Weibull distribution in two-stress level fatigue life predictions. It is found that two-stress level fatigue life prediction by the expanded equal rank assumption is close to the experimental data.

  • This study analyzed the spatial correlograms of minutely rainfall data with respect to various accumulation times. A bivariate mixed lognormal distribution was applied for rainfall modelling. A total of 26 minutely rainfall data sets from rain gauge stations in the central part of Korean peninsula were analyzed, also repeated for several storm types like Jang-Ma, typhoon and convective storms for their comparison. The accumulation times 1, 2, 3, 5, 10, 30 and 60 minutes were considered in this study. As results, it was found that the minutely rainfall data available was not good enough for estimating minutely rainfall intensity at ungaged locations. It seems more practical to use the hourly rainfall data with much higher rain gauge density, if proper methods for interpolation and data dis-aggregation are provided.

  • Vapor Axial Deposition (VAD), one of optical fiber preform fabrication processes, is performed by deposition of submicron-size silica particles that are synthesized by combustion of raw chemical materials. In this study, flow field is assumed to be a forced uniform flow perpendicularly impinging on a rotating disk. Similarity solutions obtained in our previous study are utilized to solve the particle transport equation. The particles are approximated to be in a polydisperse state that satisfies a lognormal size distribution. A moment model is used in order to predict distributions of particle number density and size simultaneously. Deposition of the particles on the disk is examined considering convection, Brownian diffusion, thermophoresis, and coagulation with variations of the forced flow velocity and the disk rotating velocity. The deposition rate and the efficiency directly increase as the flow velocity increases, resulting from that the increase of the forced flow velocity causes thinner thermal and diffusion boundary layer thicknesses and thus causes the increase of thermophoretic drift and Brownian diffusion of the particles toward the disk. However, the increase of the disk rotating speed does not result in the direct increase of the deposition rate and the deposition efficiency. Slower flow velocity causes extension of the time scale for coagulation and thus yields larger mean particle size and its geometric standard deviation at the deposition surface. In the case of coagulation starting farther from the deposition surface, coagulation effects increases, resulting in the increase of the particle size and the decrease of the deposition rate at the surface.

  • Korean certification regulation for particulate filtering respirators requires inward leakage (IL) test as European Standards (EN) and the standard levels of regulation are the same as those of EN. This study was conducted to evaluate particulate filtering respirators being commercially used in the market by using IL and assess the characteristics of IL. The study began with discussing the concept of IL, comparison of IL with fit test, and IL measurement method. Three brands of half masks and 10 brands of filtering facepieces (two top class, four 1st class and four 2nd class), total 13 brands respirators, and 10 test panels (subjects) who were classified in 9 facial grids in accordance with face length and lip length, were selected for IL test. IL tests were conducted in the laboratory of 3M Innovation Center which was established by EN standard. As expected ILs of half masks were lower than those of filtering facepiece mask. ILs of half masks and some filtering facepieces were significantly different in manufacturers. ILs of 1st class filtering facepieces were found to be much more than those of 2nd class and thus the result would cause wearers to get confused to select a mask. Four of six brands being no compliance with standards were thought that they should be tested again for certification because of a lot of differences from standards. There were no significant differences among ILs of five exercises. In 6 out of 13 brands lognormal distribution of ILs may be a better fit distribution and in 7 brands both lognormal and normal distributions were rejected. The result indicates that geometric mean may be better than arithmetic mean to establish standard.

  • This study was performed at eleven small-sized plating factories located in Seoul, Incheon, Ansan, and Taejeon from July 21 to October 6, 1992. The major objectives of this study were to evaluate worker exposure to hexavalent chromium and local exhaust ventilation (L.E.V.) systems at the chromium plating operations. The most suitable L.E.V. systems for chromium plating tanks were designed as examples for recommendation to the industry. The results are summarized as follows. The range of chromium plating operations investigated included decorative, hard, and black chromium plating on several kinds of parts. Most of plating tanks were not equipped with proper control methods against emission of hexavalent chromium mists and workers were not wearing appropriate personal protectives. The ariborne hexavalent chromium concentrations showed an approximate lognormal distribution. The geometric means of both personal and area samples were within the Korean and ACGIH standards, $50{\mu}g/m^3$. However, in comparison with the NIOSH criterion, $1{\mu}g/m^3$, the geometric means of personal samples at two factories and the geometric means of area samples at two factories exceeded it. The geometric means of personal and area samples of high exposure groups (above the NIOSH criterion) were 7 and 27 times higher than those of low exposure groups (below the NIOSH criterion), respectively. The L.E.V. systems of high exposure groups were improperly designed, and the factory with the highest exposure level had no L.E.V. systems at all on chemical etching process. Whereas at factories of low exposure groups, mist control methods such as mist suppressants, tank cover, and/or auxillary L.E.V. systems were added to L.E.V systems. The evaluation of L.E.V. systems showed that there was no chromium plating operation satisfying the ACGIH criteria for capture velocity, slot velocity, and exhaust rate simultaneously. To increase performance of L.E.V. systems, it must be designed to minimize the impact of boundary layer separation. Push-pull ventilation hood and downward plenum ventilation hood were suggested for the Korean industry.
