  • In a structural inverse problem with a limitation to the number of measuring degrees of freedom, the selection of optimal sensor locations (OSL) is critical for a good result. The current research proposes and a new OSL method and compares it with a widely used OSL method. The proposed method utilizes the sensitivity of eigenvectors with respect to the structural parameters. A simulation study for a tower structure is carried out. The structural parameters are estimated by a SI method. The influences of OSL on SI results are investigated.

  • A total of 65 rain gauges with Automatic Weather Station(AWS) were used to regional analysis of precipitation. Nine cluster regions were identified using geographical locations, maximum, mean, standard deviation of 1 day maximum rainfalls, mean annual precipitation and rainfall of rainy season in Korea. The mean annual precipitation, geographical locations, and the synoptic generating mechanisms were used to identify th five climatological homogeneous regions in Korea. Number of final regions by mean annual precipitation and cluster methods divided into five regions in Korea.

  • This paper presents a fast algorithm for face detection from color images on internet. We use Mahalanobis distance between standard skin color and actual pixel color on IQ color space to segment skin color regions. The skin color regions are the candidate face region. Further, the locations of eyes and mouth regions are found by computing average pixel values on horizontal and vertical pixel lines. The geometry of mouth and eye locations is compared to the standard face geometry to eliminate false face regions. Our Method is simple and fast so that it can be applied to face search engine for internet.

  • This paper presents a direct adaptive poleplacement control scheme which is applicable to discrete-time non-minimum phase systems. It is proved that by this scheme the poles can be placed at the desired locations and the overall state vector of the system is uniformly bounded if the reference input is sufficiently rich, and also proved that in case of insufficiently rich reference input the overall system can still be stabilized though the poles may not be placed exactly at the desired locations. The effectiveness of this scheme is verified by digital computer simulations.

  • Process capability indices (PCls) have been widely used in manufacturing industries to provide a quantitative measure of process potential and performance. The previous studies have measured only one location on each part in the case of single variate. To calculate the reliable process capability, a couple of measuring locations on each part are required. In this paper, we propose a new system process capability index $SC_{pm}$ (m) which is the minimum value of the location PCls.

  • In construction industries, the problem areas in safety are different to those of manufacturing. For instance, construction safety efforts must strongly emphasize fall prevention, whereas caught-in/ between incidents and electrical shocks are common in manufacturing. This paper reports an analysis of fall incidents that lead to fatalities in 1999 and in 2000. It also provides a safety plan for fall prevention by analyzing the origins of fall incidents by their trades and locations of concern. The findings of this study are expected to contribute toward reducing fall incidents in construction industry.

  • Pole placement method is widely used in controller design. For the stability of the closed loop system, user-specified desired locations including extra pole locations in the s-plane is chosen and by some procedure, feedback gain is obtained. In this paper, only desired pole location is used, and the calculation process is done for attaining linear quadratic stability. Similarly transformation is used for this. By computer simulations using MATLAB, the effectiveness is shown.

  • This paper is to build a spatial decision support system designed to solve problems relevant to the decision-making for retail center locations. For construction of the system this paper discusses the primary procedures of spatial modeling and issues of data, which are required for integrating spatial interaction models to GIS having capability of managing, analyzing and visualizing spatial data sets. Lexington, Kentucky, is selected as a case study to implement the spatial decision support system based on the spatial modeling module. This system for retail center locations is useful of estimating the catchment areas more accurately and analyzing resultant flow patterns. And this system can make spatial analysis efficiently for what-if scenarios such as an intended retail center or changing demand. The benefits of adopting this system allow the decision makers to plan the investment strategies and search for stable market structure.

  • In this study, solar eclipse records were investigated during the Three Kingdoms era of ancient Korea using astronomical calculations and numerical simulations. Under the condition that the solar eclipses were actually observed at the well known capitals of the Three Kingdoms, I investigated the probabilities that the optimal observation areas of the Early Silla, Goguryeo, and Baekje records would appear around Chinese continent. I found higher probabilities than those suggested by Park and La (1994), although the numerical values are still low, especially in the case of the Early Silla records. On the other hand, the probability that the optimal observation area of the Later Silla records will be present around South Korea is only 13.6%, although the area shows a good match with the known capital. I also analyzed the number distribution of the eclipse records for the Three Kingdoms (except for the latter Silla's) according to the observers' locations: at the optimal observation areas and at the known capitals. And then I compared with the number distribution of all eclipses observable from those locations. From the $\chi^2$-test, I found that the Goguryeo and Baekje records had better representation of their population distributions at the latter regions ($\chi^2$=27.93 and 205.5) than at the former ones ($\chi^2$=34.19 and 211.5). Therefore, it is difficult to conclude that the observers' locations during the Three Kingdoms period were either near China, as suggested by Park and La, or in the Korean peninsula, solely based on these results. It is thus recommended that more studies are required to confirm the real observers' locations during the Three Kingdoms era.

  • As the importance of 'bike revitalization' has been emphasized in our society, many cities around the world put enormous efforts to create a bike-oriented transportation system. None the less, the results were not much productive and effective. In this study, to decide the location and number of the bike-parking facilities, the heuristic P-median algorithm has been applied with and without budget constraints. A test network with 30 candidate locations (centroids) were employed. The results show that the optimum number of bike parking lots with and without the budget limits are 9 and 20, respectively. Since the optimum locations determined in this study were congruous with the actual bike parking lots with high utilization rates, it is expected that the proposed methods can be applied for determining the optimum locations of the bike parking facilities elsewhere. Some limitations and future research agenda have also been discussed.
