  • Plastic deformation of link beams in eccentrically braced frames is the primary dissipating source of seismic energy. Despite the excellent compatibility with the architectural designs, previous researches indicate the deficiency of flexural yielding links compared to the shear yielding ones because of their localized plastic deformation. Previous investigations have shown that implementing web openings in beams could be an efficient method to improve the seismic performance of moment-resisting connections. Accordingly, this research investigates the use of flexural links with stiffened and un-stiffened web openings to eliminate localized plasticity at the ends of the link. For this purpose, the numerical models are generated in finite element software "Abaqus" and verified against experimental data gathered from other studies. Models are subjected to cyclic displacement history to evaluate their behavior. Failure of the numerical models under cyclic loading is simulated using a micromechanical based damage model known as Cyclic Void Growth Model (CVGM). The elastic stiffness and the strength-based and CVGM-based inelastic rotation capacity of the links are compared to evaluate the studied models' seismic response. The results of this investigation indicate that some of the flexural links with edge stiffened web openings show increased inelastic rotation capacity compared to an un-perforated link.

  • We have developed a numerical model for a remote ICP(inductively coupled plasma) system in 2D and 3D with gas distribution configurations and confirmed it by plasma diagnostics. The ICP source has a Cu tube antenna wound along a quartz tube driven by a variable frequency rf power source($1.9{\sim}3.2$ MHz) for fast tuning without resort to motor driven variable capacitors. We investigated what conditions should be met to make the plasma remotely localized within the quartz tube region without charged particles' diffusing down to a substrate which is 300 mm below the source, using the numerical model. OES(optical emission spectroscopy), Langmuir probe measurements, and thermocouple measurement were used to verify it. To maintain ion current density at the substrate less than 0.1 $mA/cm^2$, two requirements were found to be necessary; higher gas pressure than 100 mTorr and smaller rf power than 1 kW for Ar.

  • As considerable interests in noise emission from a ship have been increased, the need for localization of noise sources of the marine propeller generating cavitation and singing noise is looming large. In many practical cases, cavitation and singing noise occur on a particular position of the certain blade of the propeller. It is so important to know the position of noise source correctly in order to eliminate or suppress unwanted noise. In this study, we develop "noise source localization technology" using TDOA method. Experimental measurements carried out at the circulating water channel and towing tank show that noise source can be clearly identified and localized using TDOA method.

  • Recently, focused ion beam (FIB) applications have been investigated for the modification of VLSI circuit, the MEMS processing, and the localized ion doping, A multi aperture FIB system has been introduced as the demands of FIB applications for high speed and large area processing increase. A liquid metal ion source has problems, a large angular divergence and a metal contamination into a substrate. In this study, a gas ion source was introduced to replace a liquid metal ion source. The gas ion source generated inductively coupled plasma (ICP) in a quartz tube (diameter: 45 mm). Ar gas fed into the quartz was ionized by a 2 turned radio frequency antenna. The Ar ions were extracted by 2 extraction grids. The maximum extraction voltage was 10 kV. A numerical simulation was used to optimize the design of extraction grids and to predict an ion trajectory. As a result, the maximum ion current density was 38 $mA/cm^2$ and the spread of ion energy was 1.6 % for the extraction voltage.

  • This study deals with a method to localize a noise source occuring in a marine vehicle in a 3D environment. Even when access to the noise source is limited for a marine vehicle, such as a ship or a submarine in operation, the signal received on a hydrophone located elsewhere contains Doppler effected noise by moving relatively. This study suggests noise localization algorithm in 3D based on Doppler effect by moving marine vehicle. Using a known source mounted on the vehicle, the noise source was estimated by reducing the range of Doppler center and closest point of approach via the least square method. The algorithm was verified through various simulations and it was shown that the noise could be localized in 3D based on Doppler effect by employing two fixed hydrophones located at the vehicle's exterior points and a known reference signal generator located somewhere on the vehicle.

  • Magnetotelluric data recorded in the middle part of the Korean Peninsula are contaminated by severe noises at dead-band frequencies. In this study, we estimated the location of noise source using a source localization method. Since conventional beamforming techniques were not adequate for the localization of electromagnetic sources, we used the matched field processing and a genetic algorithm. The solutions for the strong noise signals tend to be localized in a narrow area, whereas those for natural MT signals shows randomly distributed patterns. The strong noise sources are mainly located in the western part of Kyonggi-do.

  • We fabricated a hybrid bulk/fully depleted silicon on insulator (FDSOI) complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) active pixel image sensor. The active pixel is comprised of reset and source follower transistors on the SOI seed wafer, while the pinned photodiode and readout gate and floating diffusion are fabricated on the SOI handle wafer after the removal of the buried oxide. The source of dark current is eliminated by hybrid bulk/FDSOI pixel structure between localized oxidation of silicon (LOCOS) and photodiode(PD). By using the low noise hybrid pixel structure, dark currents qm be suppressed significantly. The pinned photodiode can also be optimized for quantum efficiency and reduce the noise of dark current. The spectral response of the pinned photodiode on the SOI handle wafer is very flat between 400 nm and 700 nm and the dark current that is higher than desired is about 10 nA/cm2 at a $V_{DD}$ of 2 V.

  • This paper proposes a power conditioning system (PCS) for distributed photovoltaic (PV) applications using an asymmetric cascaded multilevel inverter with a single PV source. One of the main disadvantages of the cascaded multilevel inverters in PV systems is the requirement of multiple isolated DC sources. Using multiple PV strings leads to a compromise in either the voltage balance of individual H-bridge cells or the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) operation due to localized variations in atmospheric conditions. The proposed PCS uses a single PV source with a flyback DC-DC converter to facilitate a reduction of the required DC sources and to maintain the voltage balance during MPPT operation. The flyback converter is used to provide input for low-voltage H-bridge cells which processes only 20% of the total power. This helps to minimize the losses occurring in the proposed PCS. Furthermore, transient analyses and controller design for the proposed PCS in both the stand-alone mode and the grid-connection mode are presented. The feasibility of the proposed PCS and its control scheme have been tested using a 1kW hardware prototype and the obtained results are presented.

  • Three-dimensional finite-difference simulation of earthquake ground motion is performed using a locally variable time-step (LVTS) scheme matching with discontinuous grids. Discontinuous grids in three directions and extension of the discontinuous grids' boundary to the free-surface in the LVTS scheme minimize the cost of both the computational memory and the CPU time for models like the localized sedimentary basin. A simplified model of sedimentary basin is dealt to show the feasibility and efficiency of the LVTS scheme. The basin parameters are examined to understand the main characteristics on ground-motion response in the basin. The results show that the seismic energy is concentrated on a marginal area of the basin far from the source. This focusing effect is mainly due to the constructive interference of the direct S-wave with the basin-edge induced surface waves. The ground-motion amplification over the deepest part of the basin is relatively lower than that above the shallow basin edge. Therefore the ground-motion amplification may be more related to the source azimuth or the direction of the incident waves into the basin rather than the depth of it.
