  • Local magnetization reversal in the exchange-biased NiFe/FeMn and $[Pd/Co]_5/FeMn$ multilayers with in-plane and out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy was achieved by using laser annealing. The local annealed NiFe/FeMn film under the opposite magnetic field shows a magnetoresistance (MR) curve having two symmetric peaks at the positive and negative exchange biasing field (${\pm}H_{ex}$). The intensity of the nucleated MR peak rises as the exposed area extends during the laser annealing process, and the peak disappears under the reverse magnetic field. In the case of [Pd/Co]/FeMn films, the local magnetization reversal increased gradually as the laser power increases. The locally reversed magnetization was restored under the opposite magnetic field.

  • In order to realize economical applications, it is important to reduce the ac loss of 2G high-temperature superconductor coated conductors. It seems to be reasonable that a multi-filamentary wire can decrease the magnetization loss. In this study, we prepared two samples of YBCO coated conductors with striations. We measured local superconducting properties of both samples by using Low Temperature Scanning Laser and Hall Probe Microscopy (LTSLHPM). The distribution of the local critical temperature of samples was analyzed from experimental results of Low Temperature Scanning Laser Microscopy (LTSLM) near the superconducting transition temperature. According to LTSLM results, spatial distributions of the local critical temperature of both samples are homogeneous. The local current density and the local magnetization in samples were explored from measuring stray fields by using Scanning Hall Probe Microscopy (SHPM). From SHPM results, the remanent field pattern of the one bridge sample in an external magnetic field confirms the Bean's critical state model and the three bridge sample has similar remanent field pattern of the one bridge sample. The local magnetization curve in the three bridge sample was measured from external fields from -500 Oe to 500 Oe. We visualized that the distribution of local hysteresis loss are related in the distribution of the remanent field of the three bridge sample. Although the field dependence of the critical current density must be taken into account, the relation of the local hysteresis loss and the remanent field from Bean's model was useful.

  • We performed magnetic force microscopy (MFM) observation on array of Co dots in order to understand magnetic state and magnetization behavior of submicron sized Co dots patterned on GaMnAs bridge. MFM observations showed the magnetization reversal and processes of local magnetization of individual ferromagnetic Co nanodots. Magnetic state of Co dots either single domain or vortex is dependent on geometrical size and thickness. Transition from single domain to vortex state can be realized with MFM tip assisted local field. Magnetization reversal process takes place through sequential reversal of individual dots. Localized inhomogeneous magnetic field can be manipulated by controlling magnetic state of individual Co dot in the array structure.

  • Fe50Cr50 metastable alloys were prepared by the mechanical alloying method with milling periods of 1, 2, 4, 6, 12 and 24 hours, respectively. The structural evolution was analyzed by the extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS). In this work, the EXAFS analysis provided the local structural information around Fe central atom. The saturation magnetization was also measured by VSM. The magnetization decreased as the process mechanical alloying progressed. The magnetic property was related to the local structural variation as a function of processing time. The analysis showed that the diffusion Cr atoms into Fe clusters caused the reduction of magnetization. EXAFS analysis exhibited that the local ordering of magnetic atoms caused the magnetic ordering. Also, EXAFS analysis showed that the long range order of Fe atoms was destroyed completely in 24 hour milling.

  • Local coercivity variation of Co/Pd nanomultilayers has been investigated by measuring the polar Kerr hysteresis loops of local areas of submicron size using a magnetooptic Kerr microscope system. Interestingly, the local coercivity distribution is very sensitive to an increase in the number of repeats: the $(2-{\AA}\;Co/ll-{\AA} Pd)_10$ sample showed a smooth variation of the local coercivity, while $(2-{\AA}\;Co/ll-{\AA} Pd)_18$ showed a large fluctuation. From micromagnetic considerations based on a thermally activated relaxation odel, we have found that this local coercivity variation has a crucial effect on the contrasting magnetization reversal behavior observed in those samples: dominant wall-motion far the former sample and dominant nucleation for the latter one.

  • Magnetic properties of MgB2 superconducting powder were investigated. M(H), the magnetic field H dependence of magnetization M, was measured and analyzed using a PPMS instrument. The MgB2 superconducting powder showed high critical current density Jc > ~ 107 A/cm2 and clean limit superconducting properties. The equilibrium magnetization Meq properties of MgB2 powders exhibiting various superconducting properties were studied. We find that the equilibrium magnetization Meq(H) properties of MgB2 powders showing conventional BCS properties deviate from the predictions of the standard local-London theory at temperatures below T = 19 K and are in good agreement with the generalized nonlocal-London theory. Nonlocal-London analysis was used to determine and analyze the nonlocal parameters. The temperature dependence of the London penetration depth values λ(T) was studied.

  • Local magnetic properties and magnetization distributions on the air-bearing surface of a thin-film magnetic head have been studied by using scanning magneto-optical Kerr microscopy. The examined head was a merged MR read/inductive writing head with a write gap equal to 0.3 $\mu m$. Sizes of top and bottom pole-tips on the air-bearing surface of the writing head were equal to $3\mu m\times3\mu m$ and $3\mu m\times30\mu m$, respectively, The measured magnetic characteristics on the head air-bearing surface were found to be very sensitive to the head design. In particular, magnetization distributions were discovered to have asymmetrical shape. Maximum magnitudes of the magnetization were located near the shorten pole-tip. So, it was experimentally proved that more magnetic flux emanates just from this part of the air-bearing head surface.

  • In this work, Monte Carlo simulation was used to investigate the magnetization properties of thin ferromagnetic films under a perturbation from a supplied heat pulse on one surface of the films. The finite difference method was used to extract the local temperature of each layer of the films as a function of time for various heat source power and heating period. Then, with the variation of the films temperature, Metropolis method was used to update the magnetic moment in magnetic grain, under the Ising framework and using the FePt parameters. With the extracted magnetization profiles, the relationship between magnetization relaxation in accordance with relevant heat parameters and films thickness was reported and discussed, with a purpose to form a database for future use.

  • Electron spin resonance and magnetization measurements were carried out on $La_0.7Ca_0.3MnO_3$ in the ferromagnetic as well as paramagnetic phases. Evidence of an inhomogeneous magnetic structure, consisting of ferro-magnetic microregions embedded in an antiferromagnetic matrix near $T_c$, as well as similar local magnetic structures above and below $T_c$, were found.
