  • Among the failure modes which can be occurred in tube hydroforming such as wrinkling, bursting or buckling, the bursting by local instability under excessive tensile stresses is irrecoverable phenomenon. Thus, the accurate prediction of bursting condition plays an important role in producing the successfully hydroformed part without any defects. As the classical forming limit criteria, strain-based forming limit diagram has widely used to predict the failure in sheet metal forming. However, it is known that the FLD is extremely dependant on strain path throughout the forming process. Furthermore, the path-dependent limitation of FLD makes the application to hydroforming process, where strain path is no longer linear throughout forming process, more careful. In this work, stress-based forming limit diagram (FLSD), which is strain path-independent and more general, was applied to prediction of forming limit in tube hydroforming. Combined with the analytical FLSD determined from plastic instability theory, finite element analyses were carried out to find out Ihe state of stresses during hydroforming operation, and then FLSD is utilized as forming limit criterion. In addition, the approach is verified with a series of bulge tests in view of bursting pressure and shows a good agreement. Consequently, it is shown that the approach proposed in this paper will provide a feasible method to satisfy the increasing practical demands for judging the farming severity in hydroforming processes.

  • In re-assessing the Jacket-type fixed steel structures, the current standards often allow the simplicity of corrosion sections using local buckling or equivalent section approach to applying empirical formulae of frame stress and resistance analyses. However, those approaches can lead to significant errors for non-uniform corroded frames in a specific area, including force distribution, stress, and allowable strength of the tubular section, compared to the actual cases. This paper investigates a suitable approach to determine the actual stress on non-uniform corroded tubular frames under compression through the non-linear ABAQUS model by considering the effect of large deformation on the frame axis and the frame section. There are 3 scenarios of interest. In the 1st and 2nd scenarios with simple corrosion cases, the stress ratios using the numerical model and theoretical formulae correspond to the calculation of allowable strength reduction ratios in standards. However, scenario 3, which describes non-uniform corroded sections based on survey data, provides considerable differences in results. Therefore, it proves the reliable and effective results when using this method to analyze the resistance of the actual corroded section in the Jacket platforms.

  • This study explores development of prediction model for seismic site classification through the integration of machine learning techniques with horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio (HVSR) methodologies. To improve model accuracy, the research employs outlier detection methods and, synthetic minority over-sampling technique (SMOTE) for data balance, and evaluates using seven machine learning models using seismic data from KiK-net. Notably, light gradient boosting method (LGBM), gradient boosting, and decision tree models exhibit improved performance when coupled with SMOTE, while Multiple linear regression (MLR) and Support vector machine (SVM) models show reduced efficacy. Outlier detection techniques significantly enhance accuracy, particularly for LGBM, gradient boosting, and voting boosting. The ensemble of LGBM with the isolation forest and SMOTE achieves the highest accuracy of 0.91, with LGBM and local outlier factor yielding the highest F1-score of 0.79. Consistently outperforming other models, LGBM proves most efficient for seismic site classification when supported by appropriate preprocessing procedures. These findings show the significance of outlier detection and data balancing for precise seismic soil classification prediction, offering insights and highlighting the potential of machine learning in optimizing site classification accuracy.

  • Kengo Kuma used to be very known well as a critic before being an architect. He usually mentioned quite unique type of comments for subjects whenever his criticism, also even his works results have been able to be targets of criticism materials by his method. His works are the achievements of challenges based on his continuous dynamic criticism. Hence, to have well understanding of his architectural thinking and works result, his complexes criticism structure must be needed to understand. And also, this study is using 'KJ Method' type to analyze his architectural thinking which is complicated making by a type of non-linear. Kengo Kuma's structures of architectural thinking and critiques perspective of modern architecture have been created by 'KJ Method'. Critiques types of keywords and consequences words collected from among the local dedicated professional architecture books to get this research result. First of all, Kengo Kuma desired even modern architecture problems to be melt as a specific architecture result such as modern type of power structure. To have result, Kengo Kuma had experienced sensible activity through materials which have specific characteristic. Also place of materiality created to get relationship between environments and architecture. Secondly, he wanted to recover troubled traditional Japanese architectural perspective which blocked relationship by dichotomy as a right way. In conclusion, this research reaches Kengo Kuma's type of architecture which strongly emphasizes harmony among related components such as human being, materials, substances based on accepted natural environments and lives' principle. Also, much more specific methods have been derived by related works results analyzing which have similar characteristic as Kengo Kuma's one.

  • Recently, as the importance of structural maintenance has been increased, studies on self - healing concrete technology are being actively carried out. On the other hand, test for evaluating the self-healing performance is not standardized yet. Although visual test is used as a basic method for measuring crack widths, it is difficult to observe the crack width inside the specimen, and there is a disadvantage that only the local measurement of the surface can be measured due to the inhomogeneous cracking characteristics. Although permeability test has been widely used as an indirect method for measuring crack width, there is a problem due to the viscosity of water, and also a possibility that the internal material of the specimen may be eluted during the test. In this study, we propose a crack width evaluation method using gas diffusion characteristics. Idealized straight cracks were fabricated by acrylic and the diffusion coefficients of specimens were analyzed with respect to crack width and thickness. The experimental results show that the crack width and the diffusion coefficient are in a linear relationship and that the thickness and diffusion coefficient are inversely related.

  • A precedure for recovering surface displacement from a time series of pressure measured by a pressure gage in a shallow water (that is, FFTM, LCM. IWM) is investigated with respect to a proper cut-off-frequency of a frequency response function for the accurate recovery of wave height and period. The authors examined the applicability of above mentioned three transformation procedures through field observations and laboratory experiments and the following results are obtained. i) The cut-off-frequency of the frequency response function used in FFTM is deeply depend on both the frequency response of the pressure sensor and the water depth at the sensor. In this study, a relatively accurate surface displacement can be recovered when the frequency response function is cut off at the frequency corresponding to kh=3.0 where k is a wave number at the depth of h. The frequency response function in the region higher than the cut-off-frequency is set constant to be the value at the cut-off-frequency. ii) The transformed surface displacements by LCM are affected by the small waves of short periods included in the measured pressure. It is found that pressure variation whose local frequency is higher than kh=1.5 has to be neglected to recover surface displacement sufficiently. iii) In IWM, the linear pressure response function is usually utilized by multiplying a coefficient N which is a function of the frequency (or kh) and takes a value around unity. However, in this study, a constant value of N(=1.0) gives a relatively accurate recovery of surface displacements.

  • This paper deals with the problem of estimating the log-transformed linear regression model to fit actual battle data from the Ardennes Campaign of World War II into the Lanchester model. The problem of determining a global solution for parameters and multicollinearity problems are identified and modified by examining the results of previous studies on data. The least squares method requires attention because a local solution can be found rather than a global solution if considering a specific constraint or a limited candidate group. The method of exploring this multicollinearity problem can be confirmed by a statistic known as a variance inflation factor. Therefore, the Lanchester model is simplified to avoid these problems, and the combat power attrition rate model was proposed which is statistically significant and easy to explain. When fitting the model, the dependence problem between the data has occurred due to autocorrelation. Matters that might be underestimated or overestimated were resolved by the Cochrane-Orcutt method as well as guaranteeing independence and normality.

  • A beam with web opening may reduce the cost of steel and the height of multistory steel buildings. Bower's analysis based on the theory of elasticity and Vierendeel analysis had evaluated the normal stresses around the holes, but these analyses have difficulties for practical uses because of complexity and the limitation for their application. In this study, it is shown that the finite element method, using smaller number of isoparametric elements by taking only a part of the beam which includes the hole, can diminish defects of the above two methods and it may represent more satisfactorily the distribution of the local stress concentration around the hole than the other methods which employed linear elements such as in the analysis by Samuel or Redwood. This study presents the effects of moments, shears, and eccentricities of a hole on the distribution of the normal stresses calculated by using the proposed finite element method. Consequently, it is found that the variations of shear force and hole depth give significant effects on the normal stresses around a hole, while the variations of eccentricities of the hole provide a little effect on them. The regression coefficients resulted from the multiple linear regression may be used for estimating the normal stresses around any arbitrary hole in the web of a beam, since the normal stresses guessed by this regression coefficient equation match well the results by the finite element method except the case of large eccentricity.

  • This paper proposes a scalable face recognition method for unconstrained face databases, and shows a simple experimental result. Existing face recognition research usually has focused on improving the recognition rate in a constrained environment where illumination, face alignment, facial expression, and background is controlled. Therefore, it cannot be applied in unconstrained face databases. The proposed system is face feature extraction algorithm for unconstrained face recognition. First of all, we extract the area that represent the important features(landmarks) in the face, like the eyes, nose, and mouth. Each landmark is represented by a high-dimensional LBP(Local Binary Pattern) histogram feature vector. The multi-scale LBP histogram vector corresponding to a single landmark, becomes a low-dimensional face feature vector through the feature reduction process, PCA(Principal Component Analysis) and LDA(Linear Discriminant Analysis). We use the Rank acquisition method and Precision at k(p@k) performance verification method for verifying the face recognition performance of the low-dimensional face feature by the proposed algorithm. To generate the experimental results of face recognition we used the FERET, LFW and PubFig83 database. The face recognition system using the proposed algorithm showed a better classification performance over the existing methods.
