A wireless power transfer (WPT) system is generally designed with the optimum source and load impedance in order to achieve the maximum power transfer efficiency (PTE) at a specific coupling coefficient. Empirically or intuitively, however, it is well known that a high PTE can be attained by adjusting either the source or load impedance. In this paper, we estimate the maximum achievable PTE of WPT systems with the given load impedance, and propose the condition of source impedance for the maximum PTE. This condition can be reciprocally applied to the load impedance of a WPT system with the given source impedance. First, we review the transducer power gain of a two-port network as the PTE of the WPT system. Next, we derive two candidate conditions, the critical coupling and the optimum conditions, from the transducer power gain. Finally, we compare the two conditions carefully, and the results therefore indicate that the optimum condition is more suitable for a highly efficient WPT system with a given load impedance.

The lateral deformation of one row pile groups was investigated based on analytical study and a numerical analysis. The emphasis was on quantifing the load transfer of pile groups subjected to lateral soil movement. An analytical method to consider pile-soil interaction in weathered soil was developed using load-transfer curve methods. Through the comparative study, it is found that the prediction by present approach is in good agreement with the general trend observed by in-situ measurements.

The load transfer mechanism of hybrid model of soil-nailing and compression anchor is studied in this paper. The hybrid model is composed of an anchor bar (installed at the tip) with two PC strands and a steel bar. It can make active behavior of skin friction by applying the pre-stress. In this paper, the load transfer mechanisms of soil-nailings, compression anchors, and hybrid models, respectively, are obtained from skin friction theory and load transfer theory. Field pullout tests are performed to identify the load transfer mechanism and experimental results are compared with analytical solution. In case of soil-nailings, the tension load is transferred from face to tip, however, in case of compression anchors, the compression load is transferred from tip to face. The experimental behavior of the hybrid model is similar to that of compression anchor when only pre-stress is applied. If the pullout test is performed by simultaneously pulling out the anchor and the nail, the compression load is dominant at the tip and tension load is dominant at the face. The load transfer mechanism of the hybrid model shows the combined behavior of soil-nailings with compression anchors.

Lots of shallow tunnels are constructed in the mountainous areas where the stress distribution in the ground around tunnel is not simple, also the impact of stress conditions on the longitudinal load transfer characteristics is unclear. The tunnel construction methods and the ground conditions would also affect the longitudinal load transfer characteristics which would be dependant on the displacement patterns of tunnel face. Therefore, in this study, the slope of the ground surface was varied in $0^{\circ}$, $10^{\circ}$, $20^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$, and the longitudinal load transfer depended on the deformation conditions of tunnelface (that were maximum deformation on the top, constant deformation, and maximum deformation on the bottom), and the stress distribution at tunnelface. As results, when the tunnelface deformed, the earth presure on the tunnelface decreased and the load at tunnel crown increased. The load transferred on the crown was influenced by the earth presure on tunnel face. Smaller load would be transfered to the wide areas when the slope of ground surface decreased. When the slope of ground surface became larger, the longitudinal load transfer would be smaller and would be concentrated on tunnelface, In addition, the shape of the transferred load distribution in the longitudinal direction was dependant on the deformation shape of tunnelface. The deformation shape of tunnelface and stress conditions in longitudinal sections would affect the shape and the magnitude of the load transfer in the longitudinal directions.

A Land slide in Granitic Gneiss weathered soil was stabilized successfully with soil nailing using 929mm steel bar. To understand the behavior of load transfer between soil and nail, in-situ pdl-out tests were carried out. The strains of steel bars were measured using strain gauges during pull-out tests. Forces-strain data from laboratory tension tests on steel bar and grouted steel bar were examined to compare with those of the pull-out tests. Comparisons were made between the pull-out test results and laboratory test result to understand load transfer mechanism.

A method to control the power distribution among receivers by the load values in a single-input, multiple-output (SIMO) wireless power transfer (WPT) system is investigated. We first derive the value of loads to maximize total efficiency. Next, a simple, but effective analytical formula of the load condition for the desired power distribution ratio is presented. The derived load solutions are simply given by system figure of merits and desired power ratios. The formula is validated with many numerical examples via electromagnetic simulations. We demonstrate that with the choice of loads from this simple formula, the power can be conveniently and accurately distributed among receivers for most practical requirements in SIMO WPT systems.
This work investigates the transient cooling characteristics of an Infrared (IR) detector cryochamber, which has a critical effect on the cooling load. The current thermal modeling considers the conduction heat transfer through a cold well. the gaseous conduction due to outgassing. and the radiation heat transfer. The transient cooling Performance. i.e. the penetration depth and cooling load, is determined using a finite difference method. It is found that the penetration depth increases as the bore conductivity increases. Gaseous conduction and radiation hardly affect the penetration depth. The transient cooling load increases as the bore conductivity increases. The effects of gaseous conduction and radiation on transient heat transfer are weak at initial stages of cooling. However, their effects become significant as the cooling Process Proceeds.
A wireless power transfer (WPT) system is usually classified as being of either a two-coil or four-coil type. It is known that two-coil WPT systems are suitable for short-range transmissions, whereas four-coil WPT systems are suitable for mid-range transmissions. However, this paper reveals that the two aforementioned types of WPT system are alike in terms of their performance and characteristics, differing only when it comes to their matching-network configurations. In this paper, we first find the optimum load and source conditions using Z-parameters. Then, we estimate the maximum power transfer efficiency under the optimum load and source conditions, and we describe how to configure the matching networks pertaining to both types of WPT system for the given optimum load and source conditions. The two types of WPT system show the same performance with respect to the coupling coefficient and load impedance. Further, they also demonstrate an identical performance in the two cases considered in this paper, that is, a strong-coupled case and a weak-coupled case.

The use of pile reinforcement is considered as one of the most promising techniques for improving load carrying capacity of piles in offshore area. In this study, to consider the horizontal and uplift bearing capacity of submerged breakwater bearing pile, exclusive analysis on load-transfer behaviour of pile was conducted. First of all, check the reinforcing effect from the three-dimensional finite element method, and estimate load transfer curve (ground reaction force). Based on these results, the reinforcing effect was quantified by estimating the coefficients of horizontal and uplift reinforcement of reinforced piles. Load transfer function with consideration of the reinforcing effect was proposed from estimated coefficients. A comparison of the analysis using the proposed load transfer function with three-dimensional finite element analysis has resulted that the proposed load transfer function is displaying good accuracy of predicting behavior of the load transfer between the pile and soil reinforcement. Interpretation of the submerged structure by applying a load transfer function considering the reinforcing effect, has shown that the reinforced pile's shear, bending moment and displacement are less than that of non-reinforced piles, while the subgrade reaction modulus arises greater. Thus, it is expected to be relatively cost effective in terms of design.
