This study shows the feasibility of the parameter of the 1st RC parallel equivalent circuit as a factor of the heat generation of lithium-ion cell. The internal resistance of a lithium-ion cell consists of ohmic and polarization resistances. The internal resistances at various SOCs of the lithium-ion cell are obtained via an electrical characteristic test. The internal resistance is inversely obtained through the amount of heat generated during the experiment. By comparing the resistances obtained using the two methods, the summation of ohmic and polarization resistances is identified as the heating factor of lithium-ion battery. Finally, the amounts of heat generated from the 2C, 3C, and 4C-rate discharge experiments and the COMSOL multiphysics simulation using the summation of ohmic and polarization resistances as the heating parameter are compared. The comparison shows the feasibility of the electrical parameters of the 1st RC parallel equivalent circuit as the heating factor.
1,1-Dialkyl-2,5-bis(trimethylsilylethynyl)-3,4-diphenylsiloles (R=Et, i-Pr, n-Hex; 3a-c) were prepared and utilized as anode active materials for lithium-ion batteries; 3a was also used as a filler for the solid-state electrolytes (SSE). Siloles 3a-c were prepared by substitution reactions in which the two bromine groups of 1,1-dialkyl-2,5-dibromo-3,4-diphe- nylsiloles, used as precursors, were substituted with trimethylsilylacetylene in the presence of palladium chloride, copper iodide, and triphenylphosphine in diisopropylamine. Among siloles 3a-c, 3a had the best electrochemical properties as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries, including an initial capacity of 758 mAhg-1 (0.1 A/g), which was reduced to 547 mAhg-1 and then increased to 1,225 mAhg-1 at 500 cycles. A 3a-composite polymer electrolyte (3a-CPE) was prepared using silole 3a as an additive at concentrations of 1, 2, 3, and 4 wt.%. The 2 wt.% 3a-CPE composite afforded an excellent ionic conductivity of 1.09 × 10-3 Scm-1 at 60℃, indicating that silole 3a has potential applicability as an anode active material for lithium-ion batteries, and can also be used as an additive for the SSE of lithium-ion batteries.

The lithium ion battery has applied to various fields of energy storage systems such as electric vehicle and potable electronic devices in terms of high energy density and long-life cycle. Despite of various research on the electrode and electrolyte materials, there is a lack of research for investigating of the binding materials to replace polymer based binder. In this study, we have investigated petroleum pitch/polymer composite with various ratios between petroleum pitch and polymer in order to optimize the electrochemical and physical performance of the lithium-ion battery based on petroleum pitch/polymer composite binder. The electrochemical and physical performances of the petroleum pitch/polymer composite binder based lithium-ion battery were evaluated by using a charge/discharge test, cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and universal testing machine (UTM). As a result, the petroleum pitch(MP-50)/polymer(PVDF) composite (5:5 wt % ratio) binder based lithium-ion battery showed 1.29 gf mm-1 of adhesion strength with 144 mAh g-1 of specific dis-charge capacity and 93.1 % of initial coulombic efficiency(ICE) value.
There is ongoing research to develop lithium ion batteries as sustainable energy sources. Because of safety problems, solid state batteries, where electrolytes are replaced with solids, are attracting attention. Sulfide electrolytes, with a high ion conductivity of 10-3 S/cm or more, have the highest potential performance, but the price of the main materials is high. This study investigated lithium hydride materials, which offer economic advantages and low density. To analyze the change in ion conductivity in polymer electrolyte composites, PVDF, a representative polymer substance was used at a certain mass ratio. XRD, SEM, and BET were performed for metallurgical analyses of the materials, and ion conductivity was calculated through the EIS method. In addition, thermal conductivity was measured to analyze thermal stability, which is a major parameter of lithium ion batteries. As a result, the ion conductivity of LiH was found to be 10-6 S/cm, and the ion conductivity further decreased as the PVDF ratio increased when the composite was formed.

The demand for electric vehicles powered by lithium-ion batteries is continuously increasing. Recovery of valuable metals from waste lithium-ion batteries will be necessary in the future. This research investigated the effect of reaction temperature on the lithium recovery ratio from hydrogen reduction followed by water leaching from lithium-ion battery NCM-based cathode materials. As the reaction temperature increased, the weight loss ratio observed after initiation increased rapidly owing to hydrogen reduction of NiO and CoO; at the same time, the H2O amount generated increased. Above 602 ℃, the anode materials Ni and Co were reduced and existed in the metallic phases. As the hydrogen reduction temperature was increased, the Li recovery ratio also increased; at 704 ℃ and above, the Li recovery ratio reached a maximum of approximately 92%. Therefore, it is expected that Li can be selectively recovered by hydrogen reduction as a waste lithium-ion battery pretreatment, and the residue can be reprocessed to efficiently separate and recover valuable metals.

High nickel layered oxide cathodes are gaining increasing attention for lithium-ion batteries due to their higher energy density and lower cost compared to LiCoO2. However, they suffer from the formation of residual lithium on the surface in the form of LiOH and Li2CO3 on exposure to ambient air. The residual lithium causes notorious issues, such as slurry gelation during electrode preparation and gas evolution during cell cycling. In this review, we investigate the residual lithium issues through its impact on cathode slurry instability based on deformed polyvinylidene fluoride (PVdF) as well as its formation and reduction mechanism in terms of inherently off-stoichiometric synthesis of high nickel cathodes. Additionally, new analysis method with anhydrous methanol was introduced to exclude Li+/H+ exchange effect during sample preparation with distilled water. We hope that this review would contribute to encouraging the academic efforts to consider practical aspects and mitigation in global high-energy-density lithium-ion battery manufacturers.
Lithium ion batteries have been widely adopted as energy storage and the LIB global market has grown fastest. However, LIB players have struggled against maximizing energy density since commercial monolithic electrodes are limited by electrolyte depletion caused by long and tortuous Li-ion diffusion pathways. Recently, new strategies designing the structure of battery electrodes strive for creating fast Li-ion path and alleviating electrolyte depletion problem in monolithic electrodes. In this paper, given the fundamental and experimental approaches, we compare the monolithic to structured electrodes and demonstrate the ways to fabricate high energy, fast chargeable Lithium ion battery.
With increasing interest in flexible electronic devices and wearable appliances, flexible lithium ion batteries are the most attractive candidates for flexible energy sources. During the last decade, many different kinds of flexible batteries have been reported. Although research of flexible lithium ion batteries is in its earlier stages, we have found that developing components that satisfy performance conditions under external deformation stress is a critical key to the success of flexible energy sources. Among the major components of the lithium ion battery, electrodes, which are connected to the current collectors, are gaining the most attention owing to their rigid and brittle character. In this mini review, we discuss candidate materials for current collectors and the previous strategies implemented for flexible electrode fabrication.
The characteristics of aqueous lithium recovery by ion exchange were studied using three commercial cation exchange resins: CMP28 (porous type strong acid exchange resin), SCR-B (gel type strong acid exchange resin) and WK60L (porous type weak acid exchange resin). CMP28 was the most effective material for aqueous lithium recovery; its performance was even enhanced by modifying the cation with $K^+$. A comparison to $Na^+$ and $H^+$ form resins demonstrated that the performance enhancement is reciprocally related to the electronegativity of the cation form. Further kinetic and equilibrium isotherm studies with the $K^+$ form CMP28 showed that aqueous lithium recovery by ion exchange was well fitted with the pseudo-second-order rate equation and the Langmuir isotherm. The maximum ion exchange capacity of aqueous lithium recovery was found to be 14.28 mg/g and the optimal pH was in the region of 4-10.

As the demand for lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles is increasing, it is important to recover valuable metals from waste lithium-ion batteries. In this study, the effects of gas flow rate and hydrogen partial pressure on hydrogen reduction of NCM-based lithium-ion battery cathode materials were investigated. As the gas flow rate and hydrogen partial pressure increased, the weight loss rate increased significantly from the beginning of the reaction due to the reduction of NiO and CoO by hydrogen. At 700 ℃ and hydrogen partial pressure above 0.5 atm, Ni and Li2O were produced by hydrogen reduction. From the reduction product and Li recovery rate, the hydrogen reduction of NCM-based cathode materials was significantly affected by hydrogen partial pressure. The Li compounds recovered from the solution after water leaching of the reduction products were LiOH, LiOH·H2O, and Li2CO3, with about 0.02 wt% Al as an impurity.
