  • Spherical lithium manganese oxide spinel, $LiMn_{2-x}M_xO_4$ (M = Al, Mg, B) prepared by wet-milling, spray-drying, and sintering process has been investigated as a cathode material for lithium ion batteries. As-prepared powders exhibit various surface morphologies and internal density in terms of boron (B) doping level. It is found that the dopant B drives the growth of the primary particle and minimizes the surface area of the powder. As a result, the dopant enhances the internal density of the particles. Electrochemical tests demonstrated that the capacity of the synthesized material at 5 C could be maintained up to 90% of that at 0.2 C. The cycle performance of the material showed that the initial capacity was retained up to 80% even after 500 cycles under the high temperature of $60^{\circ}C$.

  • An investigation of rare metals recovery from LiNixCoyMnzO2 cathode material of the end-of-life lithium-ion batteries is presented. To determine the influence of reductant on the leach process, the cathode material (containing Li 7.6%, Co 20.4%, Mn 19.4%, and Ni 19.3%) was leached in H2SO4 solutions either with or without H2O2. The optimal process parameters with respect to acid concentration, addition dosage of H2O2, temperature, and the leaching time were found to be 2.0 M H2SO4, 4 vol.% H2O2, 70℃, and 150 min, respectively. The yield of metal values in the leach liquor was > 99%. The leach liquor was subsequently treated by precipitation techniques to recover nickel as Ni(C4H7N2O2)2 and lithium as Li2CO3 with stoichiometric ratios of 2:1 and 1.2:1 of dimethylglyoxime:Ni and Na2CO3:Li, respectively. Cobalt was recovered by solvent extraction following a 3-stage process using Na-Cyanex 272 at pHeq ~5.0 with an organic-to-aqueous phase ratio (O/A) of 2/3. The loaded organic phase was stripped with 2.0 M H2SO4 at an O/A ratio of 8/1 to yield a solution of 114 g/L CoSO4; finally recovered CoSO4.xH2O by crystallization. The process economics were analyzed and found to be viable with a margin of $476 per ton of the cathode material.

  • A simple and effective method for the synthesis of LiMn$_{2}$O$_{4}$ powder as a cathode material for lithium secondary battery is reported. Micrometer size LiMn$_{2}$O$_{4}$ was prepared by combustion synthesis technique employing initial mixture of l.l LiNO$_{3}$ -1.3Mn-0.7MnO$_{2}$-1NaCl composition. Parametric study of the combustion process including molar ratio of Mn/MnO$_{2}$ and NaCl concentration were carried out under air atmosphere. The combustion products obtained were additionally heat treated at the temperature 900$^{\circ}C$ and the washed by distilled water. The results of charging-discharging characteristics revealed that LiMn$_{2}$O$_{4}$ cell synthesized in the presence of NaCl had a high capacity and much better reversibility than one formed without NaCl An approximate chemical mechanism for LiMn$_{2}$O$_{4}$ formation is proposed.

  • CNC (Carbon Nano Colloid) was used as an additive to the positive electrode to improve the discharge performance of sealed lead-acid batteries, The cathode active material ($PbO_2$) has a relatively low utility of less than 60 % compared with other kind of batteries, such as Ni-MH and Lithium ion, In this study, to overcome the above-mentioned problem we investigated the effects of CNC addition on the enhancement of electrical connection with not-utilized $PbO_2$ and resultantly electrical conductivity of electrode, We examined low rate discharge capacities, high rate discharge capacities and internal resistances of the batteries containing various amounts of CNC. From these results, we found out that the addition of CNC into the positive electrode made a significant improvement in high rate discharge capacity, We also suggested the optimum content of CNC material in positive electrode.

  • Drastic development of ubiquitous devices requires more advanced batteries with high specific capacitance and high rate capability. Large-area microstructure characterization across the stacks of cathode, electrolyte and anode might reveal the origin of the instability or degradation of batteries upon cycling charge. In this study, sample preparation methods to observe the cross-section view of the electrodes for battery in SEM and several imaging tips are reviewed. For an accurate evaluation of the microstructure, ion milling which flats the surface uniformly is recommended. Pros and cons of cross-section polishing (CP) with Ar ion and focused ion beam (FIB) with Ga ion were compared. Additionally, a modified but new cross-section milling technique utilizing precision ion polishing system (PIPS) which can be an alternative method of CP is developed. This simple approach will make the researchers have more chances to prepare decent large-area cross-section electrode for batteries.

  • Zirconium-doped $Li_{1.1}Co_{1-x}Zr_xO_2(0{\leq}x{\leq}0.05)$ powders as cathode materials for lithium ion batteries were synthesized using an ultrasonic spray pyrolysis method. Cyclic voltammetry and cyclic stability tests were performed, and the changes of microstructure were observed. The solubility limit of zirconium into $Li_{1.1}CoO_2$ was less than 5 mol%, and monoclinic $Li_2ZrO_3$ phase was formed above the limit. The Zr-doping suppressed the grain growth and increased the lattice parameters of the hexagonal $LiCoO_2$ phase. The Zr-dopiong of 1mol% resulted in the best cyclic performance in the range of $3.0{\sim}4.3V$ at 1C rate (140 mA/g); the initial discharge capacity decreased from 158 mAh/g to 60 mAh/g in the undoped powder, while from 154 mAh/g to 135 mAh/g in the Zr-doped powder of 1 mol% after 30 cycles. The excellent cycle stability of Zr-doped powder was due to the low polarization during chargedischarge processes which resulted from the delayed collapse of the crystal structure of the active materials with Zr-doping.

  • As the size of market for electric vehicles and energy storage systems grows, the demand for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is increasing. Currently, commercial LIBs are fabricated with liquid electrolytes, which have some safety issues such as low chemical stability, which can cause ignition of fire. As a substitute for liquid electrolytes, solid electrolytes are now being extensively studied. However, solid electrolytes have disadvantages of low ionic conductivity and high resistance at interface between electrode and electrolyte. In this study, Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO), one of the best ion conducting materials among oxide based solid electrolytes, is fabricated through RF-sputtering and various electrochemical properties are analyzed. Moreover, the electrochemical properties of LLZO are found to significantly improve with co-sputtered Li2O. An all-solid thin film battery is fabricated by introducing a thin film solid electrolyte and an Li4Ti5O12 (LTO) cathode; resulting electrochemical properties are also analyzed. The LLZO/Li2O (60W) sample shows a very good performance in ionic conductivity of 7.3×10-8 S/cm, with improvement in c-rate and stable cycle performance.

  • Given the high theoretical capacity (1,675 mAh g-1) and the inherent affordability and ubiquity of elemental sulfur, it stands out as a prominent cathode material for advanced lithium metal batteries. Traditionally, sulfur was sequestered within conductive porous carbons, rooted in the understanding that their inherent conductivity could offset sulfur's non-conductive nature. This study, however, pivots toward a transformative approach by utilizing diatom shell (DS, diatomite)-a naturally abundant and economically viable siliceous mineral-as a sulfur host. This approach enabled the development of a sulfurlayered diatomite/S composite (DS/S) for cathodic applications. Even in the face of the insulating nature of both diatomite and sulfur, the DS/S composite displayed vigorous participation in the electrochemical conversion process. Furthermore, this composite substantially curbed the loss of soluble polysulfides and minimized structural wear during cycling. As a testament to its efficacy, our Li-S battery, integrating this composite, exhibited an excellent cycling performance: a specific capacity of 732 mAh g-1 after 100 cycles and a robust 77% capacity retention. These findings challenge the erstwhile conviction of requiring a conductive host for sulfur. Owing to diatomite's hierarchical porous architecture, eco-friendliness, and accessibility, the DS/S electrode boasts optimal sulfur utilization, elevated specific capacity, enhanced rate capabilities at intensified C rates, and steadfast cycling stability that underscore its vast commercial promise.

  • Recently, because diffusion of cordless machine and smart card and so on, and concern of unpolluted materials, one are concerned with Li secondary batteries. Li secondary batteries have high voltage, high energy density and high power density, and heavy metal pollution problems are little. Mn is low price and is distributed much quantity. Therefore, we investigated $MnO_2$. In this study, we worked the electrochemical properties and charge/discharge characteristics of $MnO_2/Li$ cells. In results, the more heating temperature is high, the more ${\gamma}-phase$ varied ${\beta}-phase$, and when $MnO_2$ is heated at $320^{\circ}C$ and super-s-black 20wt% is mixed, characteristics are the best.
