  • Pulmonary embolism is a serious complication, which is well known in patients undergoing total hip or total knee arthroplasty or lower extremity fracture surgery. But, there are few literatures concerning pulmonary embolism after upper extremity surgery. Pulmonary embolism after minor upper extremity fracture surgery is extremely rare. We report a case of 66-year-old female patient that developed pulmonary embolism after percutaneous cannulated screw fixation for a greater tubercle fracture of the proximal humerus with literature review.

  • As roles of service industry in economy rises, studies related with service quality were increased continuously. We review 131 papers domestic literatures was published from 2003 during the latest 5 years to 2007 and classify them on service industry, measurement model and research contents. Also, we analyze research contents and suggest future research issues in service management areas.

  • We had experienced a case of pericarditis associated with Mycoplasma and Salmonella co-infection. This 5-year old boy presented with high fever and generalized tonic-clonic seizure. The diagnosis was based on the markedly increased serial titer of Widal test and cold agglutinin with Mycoplasma indirect hemmagglution test during hospitalization. The electrocardiogram revealed P-R interval prolongation and an echocardiogram revealed moderate pericardial effusion. The patient treated with ceftriaxone and erythromycin for 2 weeks, and responded to the treatment well. We report this case with brief review of the related literatures.

  • In this paper, we discuss the propriety of the various noninformative priors for the Pareto distribution. The reference prior, Jeffreys prior and ad hoc noninformative prior which is used in several literatures will be introduced and showed that which prior gives the proper posterior distribution. The reference prior and Jeffreys prior give a proper posterior distribution, but ad hoc noninformative prior which is proportional to reciprocal of the parameters does not give a proper posterior. To compute survival function, we use the well-known approximation method proposed by Lindley (1980) and Tireney and Kadane (1986). And two methods are compared by simulation. A real data example is given to illustrate our methodology.

  • The Korean native goat has been extensively used in the experimental work. Compared to those experimental work employing the goat, reports on their diseases have been scarcely documented. In the present communication, authors reviewed the literatures pertaining to the diseases of the Korean native goat. Diseases of the respiratory system, the alimentary tract, the liver, the musculoskeletal system, the skin, the urogenital system, the nervous system, the eye, and the heart were reviewed. And then metabolic, toxic, and parasitic diseases were reviewed. Of those diseases reviewed, diseases of the heart and kidney, and metabolic and toxic diseases were wholly artificially-induced. Except the parasitic diseases, a considerable number of diseases of other organ systems were also artificially-induced. And the parasitic diseases reported were confined to the internal parasites. Authors feel that the known occurrence of diseases would help diagnose new disease in the goat.

  • Pacemaker therapy has been established as a routine procedure in a variety of disturbances of :cardiac rhythm. Cardiac pacing has greatly reduced the mortality rate in patients suffering from bradyarrhythmias complicated by Stokes-Adams attacks. However, in spite of the simplicity of the treatment and reliability of the devices available today, patients and physicians alike are invovled in a multitde of pacemaker specific problems. Clinical experience with permanent transvenous pacing during a 3 year period is presented. A total of 20 pacemaker operations were performed in 13 patients. The complications in our 20 pacemaker operations were headed by skin ulceration of 3 generator pockets and early dislocation of 3 electrodes. In an additional 2 patient, stimulation of diaphragm due to a position of electrode in the coronary sinus was noticed in one and battery failure of pulse generator was detected in the other. Literatures were reviewed.

  • Acute respiratory failure has become an increasingly frequent cause of death following shock or trauma. Interstitial or diffuse alveolar edema, as chief pathophysiologic change of acute respiratory insufficiency, can be the result of sepsis, fat embolism, cardiac failure, lung congestion, and oxygen toxicity. These pulmonary problems are extremely difficult to treat without early recognition of their development and aggressive management. If the treatment is delayed, the progressive respiratory failure is almost uniformly fatal. Authors have experienced two cases of acute respiratory insufficiency following the blunt chest trauma, which were healed uneventfully. Literatures were briefly reviewed.

  • Pulmonary aspergillosis is a rather uncommon disease as a saprophytic infection, mostly producing significant repeated hemoptysis and frequently combined with chronic debilitating disease or cavitary lung disease such as pulmonary tuberculosis, lung abscess and bronchiectasis. Evaluation of the characteristic symptom, X-ray finding composing intracavitary fungus ball with crescent air patch and immunologic test constitute essential part of diagnosis. Surgical resection is a successful treatment combined with administration of anti-fungal agent to eradicate completely. We present one case of surgically removed pulmonary aspergillosis showing fungus ball, superimposed on underlying pulmonary tuberculosis, with review of the related literatures.

  • At present, various methods are available to analyze storm runoff data. Among these, application of Z-transform is comparatively simple and new, and the technique can be used to identify rainfall and unit hydrograph from analysis of a single storm runoff. The technique has been developed under the premise that the rainfall-runoff process behaves as a linear system for which the Z-transform of the direct runoff equals the product of the Z-transforms of the transfer function and the rainfall. In the hydrologic literatures, application aspects of this method to the rainfall-runoff process are lacking and some of the results are questionable. Thus, the present study provides the estimation of Z-transform technique by analyzing the application process and the results using hourly runoff data observed at the research basin of International Hydrological Program (IHP), the Pyeongchanggang River basin. This study also provides the backgrounds for the problems that can be included in the application processes of the Z-transform technique.

  • Malignant tumors of the sinonasal tract constitute about 2% of those arising in the head and neck. Exposure to industrial fumes has been associated with an increased incidence of this malignant tumor. Early symptomatology of this cancer is identical to the symptomatology seen in benign conditions, such as swelling on forehead, headache, diplopia, and rhinorrhea. Thereby, delayed diagnosis leads to poor prognosis. Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common malignancy of the sinonasal tract, constituting about 80%, and primary carcinoma of the frontal sinus is extremely rare. Recently, authors experienced a case of primary carcinoma of the frontal sinus in a 60 year old male and performed transcranial resection. Now we report this case with brief review of literatures.
