Effect of the Processing History on the Morphology and Properties of the Ternary Blends of Nylon 6, a Thermotropic Liquid Crystalline Polymer, and a Functionalized Polypropylene

  • Properties of ternary blends of nylon 6 (Ny6), a thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer (TLCP, poly(ester amide), 20 wt%) and a maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (2 wt%) (MAPP) were studied under various processing conditions. TLCP was pre-blended with MAPP first and then the binary one blended again with Ny6. The processing temperature of the second mixing was varied. Thermal properties show the partial miscibility of the ternary blend. The morphology of the TLCP phase in the first blending shows mostly in the fibril bundle shape, but varies between droplets and oriented fibrils after the second processing. Some of TLCP phase lost the fibril morphology during the second processing stage. The morphology variation invokes the change in tensile properties. Low extrusion temperature (270$\^{C}$) provides more fibril shapes, which are associated with less deformation in the second stage. The processing temperature effect was more evident when the draw ratio was high. High drawing was applicable due to the stabilizing action of tile compatibilizer.

전방향족 폴리에스터 열경화성 액정의 합성과 특성 (Synthesis and Characterization of Wholly Aromatic Polyester Liquid Crystalline Thermosets)

  • 용융법을 이용해서 말단에 가교 반응이 가능한 메틸 말레이미드(methyl maleimide)기를 가진 전방향족 에스터 결합의 액정(liquid crystal, LC)을 합성하였고, 합성된 LC를 이용해서 적당한 열처리 과정을 통해 열경화성 액정(liquid crystalline thermoset, LCT) 필름을 제조하였다. 합성된 LC 및 LCT 필름은 FTIR(Fourier transform infrared) 분광기, WAXD(wide angle X-ray diffraction), DSC(differential scanning calorimetry), TGA(thermogravimetric analysis), TMA(thermomechanical analysis), 그리고 가열판이 장착된 편광 현미경으로 특성 분석을 하였다. 유리전이온도($T_g$)와 열팽창 계수는 주사슬 구조의 메소겐에 의해 강한 영향을 받는 것으로 확인되었고, $para$-로 치환된 비페닐구조를 가진 LCT 필름이 가장 좋은 열적 성질을 보여 주었다.

  • Coumarin기가 포함된 액정성을 가진 단량체를 액정 상태에서 UV 조사에 의해 중합하였다. Cycloaddition 반응에 의해 coumarin 액정 단량체는 이량체로 전환되었으며, 광이량화 반응 후에도 액정성이 유지되었다. 그리고 이러한 이량체는 단량체의 액정범위 보다 넓은 영역에서 액정성을 나타내었다. 화합물의 구조는 FT IR 및 $^1H$ NMR에 의해 확인하였으며, 그들의 열적 상전이온도 및 열안정성들은 DSC, GPC 및 편광현미경에 의해 조사하였다. 광중합에 의해 생성된 고분자 생성물은 광학 편광 현미경 관찰에 의해 스멕틱 및 네마틱 조직을 갖는 쌍방성 액정성을 보였다.

Dye Sensitized Solar Cell using Polymer Electrolytes based on Poly(ethylene oxide) with an Ionic Liquid

  • The encapsulation of volatile organic electrolytes is a major challenge in practical applications of the DSSC. Ionic liquid (IL) within polymer electrolytes is an attractive candidate for replacement. Here we used a low viscosity ionic liquid 1-ethyl 3-methylimidazolium thiocyanate in order to modify ionic conductivity (${\sigma}$) of polymer electrolyte ($PEO:Kl/l_{2}$) and hence DSSC efficiency. The doping of IL enhanced ${\sigma}$ and attained maximum (${\sigma}=7.62{\times}10^{-4}S/cm$) at 80 wt% of IL concentration. Beyond this it was harder to get stable films. XRD confirmed that the intensity of the sharp PEO crystalline peaks decreased when IL was added. The DSC studies confirmed the reduction in crystallinity by adding ionic liquid.The efficiency of solar cell using aforesaid material was 0.6 % at 1 sun irradiation.

  • Although the transport of small molecules through polymer membranes has been extensively studied for a long time, understanding of the transport mechanism is still far from satisfactory. This in turn makes difflcult the search for new membrane materials with the desired transport characteristics. Therefore it is of the utmost interest to study the correlations between a polymer's structure and morphology and its transport properties. Generally, polyurethanes serve as excellent polymer materials for such studies since their physical and chemical properties can be widely and systematically modified by varying the length, composition and chemical structure of the hard and soft segments. In this paper liquid crystalline polyurethanes are presented as new membrane materials for liquld separation and their transport properties with respect to molecular and supermolecular-structure are discussed.

  • 히드로퀴논과 p-히드록시 벤조산, 그리고 1,6-디브로모헥산을 이용하여 유연한 알킬기를 주사슬에 가지는 열방성 액정 고분자(TLCP)를 얻었다. TLCP의 녹음 전이온도 이상에서 도데실 암모니움-몬모릴로나이트(C$_{12}$-MMT)를 첨가하여 나노복합재료를 만들었다. $C_{12}$-MMT를 TLCP에 대해 1 wt%만 섞어도 액정성은 파괴되었으며, 그 이상의 $C_{12}$-MMT양에 대해서도 마찬가지였다. 첨가된 $C_{12}$-MMT중 일부는 TLCP에 잘 분산되었으나, 일부는 뭉쳐진 형태로 존재하였다. 합성된 나노복합재료의 열적 성질과 몰폴로지는 시차주사 열분석기 (DSC), 열중량 분석기 (TGA), 편광 현미경, 그리고 전자 현미경 (SEM, TEM) 등을 이용하여 분석하였다.다.

Thermal Decomposition Behavior and Durability Evaluation of Thermotropic Liquid Crystalline Polymers

  • The thermal decomposition behavior and degradation characteristics off our different thermotropic liquid crystalline polymers (TLCPs) were studied. The thermal decomposition behavior was determined by means of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) at different heating rates in nitrogen and air. The order of the thermal stability was as follows: multi-aromatic polyester > hydroxybenzoic acid (HBA)/hydroxynaphthoic acid (HNA) copolyester > HNA/hydroxyl acetaniline (HAA)/terephthalic acid (TA) copolyester > HBA/Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) copolyester. The activation energies of the thermal degradation were calculated by four multiple heating rate methods: Flynn-Wall, Friedman, Kissinger, and Kim-Park. The Flynn-Wall and Kim-Park methods were the most suitable methods to calculate the activation energy. Samples were exposed to an accelerated degradation test (ADT), under fixed conditions of heat ($63{\pm}3^{\circ}C$), humidity ($30{\pm}4%$) and Xenon arc radiation ($1.10\;W/m^2$), and the changes in surface morphology and color difference with time were determined. The TLCPs decomposed, discolored and cracked upon exposure to ultraviolet radiation.
