Homogeneously aligned nematic liquid crystal displays (LCDs) driven by in-plane or fringe field were known to exhibit wide viewing angle and appeared to be black in the off state. However, the existence of spacers inside the cell causes the deformation of the liquid crystal molecules. Such a deformation of the liquid crystal causes light-leakage in the dark state, which lowers contrast ratio of the display. We found that the light-leakage due to deformation of the LC director near the spacer mainly depends on the dielectric anisotropy and the ratio of elastic constants of the LC. In this paper, the mechanism on deformation of the LC near spacer is investigated by optical polarizing microscopy.
We have studied contrast ratio of a homogeneously aligned nematic liquid crystal (LC) display as a function of the angle between the polarizer axis and LC director. The results show that a cell configuration in which a polarizer axis facing a light source coincides with a short LC axis has a better process margin in terms of high contrast ratio than that of the cell coinciding with a long LC axis.
Injection time of liquid crystal (LC) by capillary action in a vertically aligned (VA) nematic LC cell takes longer than that in a homogeneously aligned (HA) LC cell because Miesowicz viscosity in the former is bigger than that in the latter. To reduce liquid crystal injection time in the VA cell, we applied vertical electric field while injecting so that the orientation of LC molecules is changed from vertical alignment to homogeneous alignment. Consequently, the injection speed is improved by 25 % when compared with the cell without an applied field.

We report a cell gap variation tolerant liquid crystal display(LCD). Since the cell gap variation of the LCD results in the variation of brightness and contrast ratio, we should control carefully the process to get the uniform cell gap. For the projector application, this is more significant and the one reason of the low yield. We observed that the brightness variation of LCD is suppressed by insertion of dielectric layer between the pixel electrode and liquid crystal.
The electrooptic properties of the reflected light in a reflective mode, $45^{\circ}C$twisted nematic liquid crystal (TNLC) cell were investigated in the voltage regions near and away from the Freedericksz transition threshold. The measured reflectivity away from the threshold voltage ($V_th$) could not be described by the model which assurnes a constant tilt angle as well as a linearized distribution of twist angle across the cell, although the data are well fitted near $V_th$. We found that in the voltage region away from $V_th$, the model considering the distributions of the tilt angle and the twist angle should be applied for the calculation of the reflectivity. The director-axis distributions were obtained from the numerical integration of the Euler-Lagrange equation.
We have performed computer simulation to obtain electro-optic characteristics of reflective hybrid aligned nematic liquid crystal displays (LCDs) driven by fringe field. The results show that the optimal retardation value (dΔn) of the cell is 0.289 ${\mu}$m, which allows for the cell to have a practical cell gap of larger than 3 ${\mu}$m when manufacturing. A reflectance of the dark state is only 0.114 % for an incident light 550 nm. At this condition, the light efficiency of white state reaches 92.7 %. The display with optimized cell parameters shows that the contrast ratio greater than 5 exists over 600 of polar angle in all directions and lower driving voltage than that of fringe-field driven homogeneously aligned reflective LCD.
In this study, we investigated about electrooptics characteristic of three kinds of TN cell on the polyimide surface. Monodomain alignments of thermal stressed TN cell over temperature of liquid crystal isotropic phase were almost the same as that of no thermal stressed TN cells. However, the thermal stressed TN cells have many defects. Also, threshold voltage and response time of thermal stressed TN cells show the same performances as no thermal stressed TN cells. There were little changes of value in these TN cells. However, transmittances of TN cells on the polyimide surface decrease with increasing thermal stress time. Finally, the residual DC voltage of the thermal stressed TN cell on the polyimide surface shows decrease of characteristics as increasing thermal stress time. Therefore, the thermal stability of TN cell was decreased by high thermal stress for the long times.

Ultra-small optical anisotropy of a rubbed polyimide (PI) alignment layer is quantitatively characterized using the improved reflection ellipsometer. Twisted nematic (TN) cells are fabricated using the rubbed PIs of known surface anisotropy as alignment layers. Distribution of liquid crystal (LC) molecules in the TN cell is characterized using transmission ellipsometry. The retardation of the rubbed PI surface increases as rubbing strength increases. The tilt angle of the optic axis of the rubbed PI surface decreases as rubbing strength especially as the angular speed of the rubbing roller increases. Pretilt angle of LC molecules in the TN cell shows strong correlation with tilt angle of the optic axis of the rubbed PI surface. Both the apparent order parameter and the effective twist angle of the LC molecules in the TN cell decrease as the pretilt angle of LC molecules increases.
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs)-doped homogeneously aligned nematic liquid crystal (LC) cells driven by in-plane field were fabricated and their electro-optic characteristics were investigated. Effective cell retardation values in an absence of an electric field between doped and undoped LC were the same each other. In the presence of an electric field, however, measured effective cell retardation value was smaller in the CNT-doped cell than in the undoped cell so that the transmittance was slightly smaller in the CNT-doped cell than in the undoped cell. In addition, the CNT-doped cell exhibited slight increase in driving voltage and decrease in response time compared to the undoped cell. The CNT effects on electro-optic characteristics of the cell were discussed.
