  • Near-field earthquake records including long-period high-amplitude velocity pulses can cause large isolation system displacements leading to buckling or rupture of isolators. In such cases, providing supplemental damping in the isolation system has been proposed as a solution. However, it is known that linear viscous dampers can reduce base displacements in case of near-field earthquakes but at the potential expense of increased superstructure response in case of far-field earthquakes. But can non-linear dampers with different levels of non-linearity offer a superior seismic performance? In order to answer this question, the effectiveness of non-linear viscous dampers in reducing isolator displacements and its effects on the superstructure response are investigated. A comparison with linear viscous dampers via time history analysis is done using a base-isolated benchmark building model under historical near-field and far-field earthquake records for a wide range of different levels of non-linearity and supplemental damping. The results show that the non-linearity level and the amount of supplemental damping play important roles in reducing base displacements effectively. Although use of non-linear supplemental dampers may cause superstructure response amplification in case of far-field earthquakes, this negative effect may be avoided or even reduced by using appropriate combinations of non-linearity level and supplemental damping.

  • In order to process a vast amount of data, there is demand for a new system with higher processing speed and lower energy consumption. To prevent 'memory wall' in von Neumann architecture, RRAM, which is a neuromorphic device, has been researched. In this paper, we summarize the features of RRAM and propose the device structure for characteristic improvement. RRAM operates as a synapse device using a change of resistance. In general, the resistance characteristics of RRAM are nonlinear and random. As synapse device, linearity and uniformity improvement of RRAM is important to improve learning recognition rate because high linearity and uniformity characteristics can achieve high recognition rate. There are many method, such as TEL, barrier layer, NC, high oxidation properties, to improve linearity and uniformity. We proposed a new device structure of TiN/Al doped TaOx/AlOx/Pt that will achieve high recognition rate. Also, with simulation, we prove that the improved properties show a high learning recognition rate.

  • We propose a digital signal processing technic that can compensate the non-linearity inherent in audio amplifiers, and present the result of the simulation. The inherent non-linearity of the audio power amplifier arising from analog devices is compensated via a digital signal processing technic consisting of indirect learning architecture and an adaptive filter. The simulation results show that the compensator can be realized using a third-order polynomial and compensates odd-order non-linearity efficiently. The even-oder non-linearity is mainly due to the dc offset at the output, which is difficult to eliminate with the proposed method. Care must be taken in designing the bias circuit to avoid the DC offset at the output. The proposed technic has significance in that digital signal processing technic can compensate for the impairment that is an inherent characteristic of an analog system.

  • The study deals with physical modeling of space frame-pile foundation and soil system using finite element models. The superstructure frame is analyzed using complete three-dimensional finite element method where the component of the frame such as slab, beam and columns are descretized using 20 node isoparametric continuum elements. Initially, the frame is analyzed assuming the fixed column bases. Later the pile foundation is worked out separately wherein the simplified models of finite elements such as beam and plate element are used for pile and pile cap, respectively. The non-linear behaviour of soil mass is incorporated by idealizing the soil as non-linear springs using p-y curve along the lines similar to that by Georgiadis et al. (1992). For analysis of pile foundation, the non-linearity of soil via p-y curve approach is incorporated using the incremental approach. The interaction analysis is conducted for the parametric study. The non-linearity of soil is further incorporated using iterative approach, i.e., secant modulus approach, in the interaction analysis. The effect the various parameters of the pile foundation such as spacing in a group and configuration of the pile group is evaluated on the response of superstructure owing to non-linearity of the soil. The response included the displacement at the top of the frame and bending moment in columns. The non-linearity of soil increases the top displacement in the range of 7.8%-16.7%. However, its effect is found very marginal on the absolute maximum moment in columns. The hogging moment decreases by 0.005% while sagging moment increases by 0.02%.

  • This paper presents new drain bias scheme for the linearity enhancement of envelope tacking power amplifiers for W-CDMA base-stations. In the conventional envelope tracking power amplifiers, the drain bias voltage is lowered close to the knee voltage of transistor, resulting in the severe linearity degradation. To solve this problem, it is proposed in this paper that the amplifier is biased in the conventional class AB mode with a fixed drain bias voltage if the input envelope is low and in the envelope tracking mode otherwise. Moreover, the drain bias in the envelope tracking mode is newly determined to minimized the distortion. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed bias scheme, simulation is performed on the W-CDMA based-station envelope tracking power amplifier using class AB Si-LDMOS power amplifier. It is shown from the simulation that the proposed bias scheme allows a drastic linearity enhancement with the comparable efficiency enough to meet the requirement of W-CDMA base-station without additional linearization techniques.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a self-diagnostic linearity quality control techniques of computed tomography (CT) by using measured CT number values from the various concentrations of iodine contrast media (CM) is diluted with distilled water under each condition of the tube voltage. The equipment was used for four-channel MDCT, the iodine concentration were using 300 mgI/ml, 350 mgI/ml, 370 mgI/ml and 400mgI/ml. Dilution of CM in distilled water was increased by each 5% until the maximum CT number values were measured. We applied the tube voltages for 90 kVp, 120 kVp, 140 kVp. As a result, we was obtained to the nearest linearity as 0.993 of correlation coefficient between the iodinated CM from 5% to 25% in 400 mgI/ml and the CT number values by 90 kVp. In conclusion, the proposed self-diagnostic linearity quality assurance technique by using iodine CM can be utilized to replace the AAPM CT performance phantom.

  • This paper proposes a method of non-linearity error detection and calibration for binary-weighted charge-driven DACs. In general, the non-linearity errors of DACs often occur due to the mismatch of layout designs or process variation, even when careful layout design methods and process calibration are adopted. Since such errors can substantially degrade the SNDR performance of DAC, it is crucial to accurately measure the errors and calibrate the design mismatches. The proposed method employs 2 identical DAC circuits. The 2 DACs are sweeped, respectively, by using 2 digital input counters with a fixed difference. A comparator identifies any non-linearity errors larger than an acceptable discrepancy. We also propose a calibration method that can fine-tune the DAC's capacitor sizes iteratively until the comparator finds no further errors. Simulations are presented, which show that the proposed method is effective to detect the non-linearity errors and calibrate the capacitor mismatches of a 12-bit DAC design of binary-weighted charge-driven structure.

  • The quality control items of mammography devices in South Korea do not include the linearity, which is required by international standards. The linearity is a requirement for the adjustment of radiation dose and radiation quality. This study tested the linearity, which was suitable for the IEC 60601-2-45 standard, of the 5 mammography devices. All showed adequate results. Consistent measurement management is required for more developed quality control in the future.

  • The multiplier circuit is necessary to estimate degradation status of electronic cards in nuclear power plant, but its accuracy is not easy in processing those functions to multiply two input signals. What is important in multiplier circuit is that the multiplication result must be accurate and its linearity must be perfect. We developed and proposed excellent linearity multiplier circuit using operational amplifiers and transistor characteristics, and then proved its validity in this paper. We have made efforts to eliminate nonlinearity components of semiconductors with this circuit in order to ensure excellent linearity of developed multiplier circuit. We conducted multiplication operations through simulation, applying adequate values to each component in order to verify the circuit composed of that method. We showed step-by-step output signals, and then compared the logical analyses and measuring results as simulation results. We confirmed that this method is superior to existing multiplication or linearity.

  • High-linearity voltage-controlled current sources (VCCSs) circuits for wide voltage-controlled oscillator and automatic gun control were proposed. The VCCS consists of emitter follower for voltage input, two common-base amplifier which their emitter connected for current output, and current mirror which connected the two amplifier for large output current. The VCCS used only five transistors and a resistor without an extra bias circuit. Simulation results show that the VCCS has current output range from 0mA to 300mA over the control voltage range from 1V to 4.8V at supply voltage 5V. The linearity error of output current has less than $1.4\%$ over the current range from 0A to 300mA.
