The parametric study was performed for performance enhancement of wave energy converter(WEC) using a submerged pendulum plate. The wave exciting moment and hydrodynamic moment were obtained by means of eigenfunction expansion method based on the linear potential theory, and then the roll response of a pendulum plate and time averaged extracted power were investigated. The optimal PTO damping coefficient was suggested to give optimal extracted power. The peak value of optimal extracted power occurs at the resonant frequency. The resonant peak and it's width increase, as the height and thickness of a pendulum plate increase. The mooring line installed at the end of the pendulum plate is effective for extracting wave energy because it can not only induce the resonance with the waves of the installation site but also increase the restoring moment in case of PTO-on. The WEC using a rolling pendulum plate suitable for the shallow water acts as breakwater as well as energy extraction device.

In the present paper, Helmholtz resonator, which is widely used as a sound-amplification device, is applied to the development of seawater-exchanging breakwater. The incident waves can induce a large response in the resonator when incident wave frequency is close to one of natural modes of the resonator. Largely amplified potential energy due to the resonance supplies clean seawater into the harbor side throughout the channel. Flow supplied by the resonator circulates the seawater of harbor and helps to improve water quality. Within the framework of linear potential theory, matched asymptotic expansion method is employed to analyze the wave responses in a resonator. The semi-circular shape of the resonator has been chosen as an analytic model for mathematical simplicity. The wave responses of both single and arrays of Helmholtz resonator are investi¬gated. To validate an analytic solution, model test is conducted at 2-dimensional wave tanle Wave hcights in the resonator and velocity at the channel are measured for the state of valve-on and valve-off.

Most analytical solutions for wave-induced soil response have been mainly developed to investigate the influence of the progressive and standing waves on the seabed response in an infinite seabed. This paper presents a new analytical solution to the governing equations considering the wave-induced soil response for the partial standing wave fields with arbitrary reflectivity in a porous seabed of finite thickness, using the effective stress based on Biot's theory (Biot, 1941) and elastic foundation coupled with linear wave theory. The newly developed solution for wave-seabed interaction in seabed of finite depth has wide applicability as an analytical solutions because it can be easily extended to the previous analytical solutions by varying water depth and reflection ratio. For more realistic wave field, the partial standing waves caused by the breakwaters with arbitrary reflectivity are considered. The analytical solutions was verified by comparing with the previous results for a seabed of infinite thickness under the two-dimensional progressive and standing wave fields derived by Yamamoto et al.(1978) and Tsai & Lee(1994). Based on the analytical solutions derived in this study, the influence of water depth and wave period on the characteristics of the seabed response for the progressive, standing and partial standing wave fields in a seabed of finite thickness were carefully examined. The analytical solution shows that the soil response (including pore pressure, shear stress, horizontal and vertical effective stresses) for a seabed of finite thickness is quite different in an infinite seabed. In particular, this study also found that the wave-induced seabed response under the partial wave conditions was reduced compared with the standing wave fields, and depends on the reflection coefficient.

An analytical model of return flow is presented outside the surf zone. The governing equation is derived from the Navier-Stokes equation and the continuity. Each term of the governing equation is evaluated by the ordering analysis. Then the infinitesimal terms, i.e. the turbulent normal stress, the squared vertical velocity of water particle and the streaming velocity, are neglected. The driving forces of return flow are calculated using the linear wave theory for the shallow water approximation. Especially, the space derivative of local wave heights is described considering a shoaling coefficient. The vertical distribution of eddy viscosity is discussed to the customary types which are the constant, the linear function and the exponential function. Each coefficient of the eddy viscosities which sensitively affect the precision of solutions is uniquely decided from the additional boundary condition which the velocity becomes zero at the wave trough level. Also the boundary conditions at the bottom and the continuity relation are used in the integration of the governing equation. The theoretical solutions of present model are compared with the various experimental results. The solutions show a good agreement with the experimental results in the case of constant or exponential function type eddy viscosity.

The interaction of oblique incident waves with a surface-mounted horizontal porous plate is investigated using matched eigenfunction expansion method under the assumption of linear potential theory. The new boundary condition on the porous plate suggested by Zhao et al.(2010) when it is situated at the still water surface is used. The imaginary part of the first propagating-mode eigenvalue in the fluid region under a horizontal porous plate, is closely related to the energy dissipation across the porous plate. By changing the porosity, plate width, wave frequencies, and incidence angles, the reflection and transmission coefficients as well as the wave loads on the porous plate are obtained. It is found that the transmission coefficients can be significantly reduced by selecting optimal porous parameter b = 5.0, also increasing the plate width and incidence angle.
The finite element technique incorporatating infinite elements is applied to analyzing the general three dimensional wave-structure interaction problems within the limits of linear wave theory. The hydrodynamic forces are assumed to be inertially dominated, and viscous effects are neglected. In order to analyze the corresponding boundary value problems efficiently, two types of elements are developed. One is the infinite element for modeling the radiation condition at infinity, and the other is the fictitious bottom boundary element for the case of deep water. To validate those elements, numerical analyses are performed for several floating structures. Comparisons with the results by using other available solution methods show that the present method incorporating the infinite and the fictitious bottom boundary elements gives good results.

A coupled finite element method (FEM)-boundary element method (BEM) for analyzing the hydroelastic response of functionally graded carbon nanotube-reinforced composite (FG-CNTRC) floating plates under moving loads is firstly introduced in this article. For that aim, the plate displacement field is described utilizing a generalized shear deformation theory (GSDT)-based FEM, meanwhile the linear water-wave theory (LWWT)-relied BEM is employed for the fluid hydrodynamic modeling. Both computational domains of the plate and fluid are coincidentally discretized into 4-node Hermite elements. Accordingly, the C1-continuous plate element model can be simply captured owing to the inherent feature of third-order Hermite polynomials. In addition, this model is also completely free from shear correction factors, although the shear deformation effects are still taken into account. While the fluid BEM can easily handle the free surface with a lower computational effort due to its boundary integral performance. Material properties through the plate thickness follow four specific CNT distributions. Outcomes gained by the present FEM-BEM are compared with those of previously released papers including analytical solutions and experimental data to validate its reliability. In addition, the influences of CNT volume fraction, different CNT configurations, water depth, and load speed on the hydroelastic behavior of FG-CNTRC plates are also examined.
The tuned liquid damper (TLD) is increasingly being used as an economical and effective vibration absorber. It consists of a water tank having the fundamental sloshing fluid frequency tuned to the natural frequency of the structure. In order to perform efficiently, the TLD must possess a certain amount of inherent damping. This can be achieved by placing screens inside the tank. The current study experimentally investigates the behaviour of a TLD equipped with damping screens. A series of shake table tests are conducted in order to assess the effect of the screens on the free surface motion, the base shear forces and the amount of energy dissipated. The variation of these parameters with the level of excitation is also studied. Finally, an amplitude dependent equivalent tuned mass damper (TMD), representing the TLD, is determined based on the experimental results. The dynamic characteristics of this equivalent TMD, in terms of mass, stiffness and damping parameters are determined by energy equivalence. The above parameters are expressed in terms of the base excitation amplitude. The parameters are compared to those obtained using linear small amplitude wave theory. The validity of this nonlinear model is examined in the companion paper.
Sloshing frequencies of the fluid in rectangular tanks with a bottom-mounted rectangular block are determined by linear water wave theory. Velocity potential is decomposed into those for the wall-induced waves, and the reflected, transmitted, and scattered waves by the block. The reflection and transmission coefficients are determined using the continuity conditions of mass flux and energy flux on the common vertical boundaries of the fluid regions, and the boundary conditions on the both sides of the block. The analysis results indicate that the sloshing frequencies reduce, as the block becomes tall and vade and as the block moves toward the center. The variations of the sloshing frequencies due to the block are found to be more sensitive in broad thanks than is tall tanks.
In the United States, a number of ocean outfalls discharge primary treated effluent into deep sea water and contribute for more efficient wastewater treatment. The long multiport diffuser connected by long pipe from a treatment plant discharge wastewater into deep water due to the steep slope of the sea bed. However, Plume discharged from the diffuser can have significant impacts on coastal communities and possibly immediate consequence on public health. Therefore, there have been growing interests about the dynamics of plume in the vicinity of the ocean outfalls. It is expected that the ocean outfall should be considered for more efficient and reliable wastewater treatments as soon as possible around coastal area in South Korea. A number of studies of plume ynamics have used various models to predict plume behavior. However, in many cases, the calculated values of plume behavior are in significantly poor agreement with realistic values. Therefore, in this study, it is recommended that improvements should be made in the application of the plume model to more simulate the actual discharge characteristics and ocean conditions. It should be noted that input parameters in plume models reflect realistic ocean conditions like waves as well as currents. In this study, as one of the new parameters, current and long wave-influenced plume rise and initial dilution have been taken into account by using simple linear wave theory under some specific assumptions for more reliable plume behavior description. Among the improved plume models approved by EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), the RSB(Roberts-Snyder-Baurngartner) and UM(Updated Merge) models were chosen for the calculation of plume behavior, and the variation calculated by both models on the basis of long period wave was compared in terms of plume rise and initial dilution.
