Multi-frequency polarization observations of Abell 695 are reported here. The brightest radio source 0838+325, which was previously classified as a wide angled head-tail radio source, is, in the present observations, resolved into two separable sources, a head-tail source 0838+325 AB and a diffuse one 0838+325C. The radio-tail shows high degree of linear polarization(${\sim}50$-25%) along the radio-tail, suggesting that the interaction with its surrounding intracluster medium (ICM) is not highly turbulent. With the present data, thermal particle densities at the locations of these sources are estimated to be n > $10^{-5}\;cm^{-3}$.
This study aimed to predict the pitting corrosion characteristics of AL-6XN super-austenitic steel using multiple linear regression. The variables used in the model are degree of sensitization, temperature, and pH. Experiments were designed and cyclic polarization curve tests were conducted accordingly. The data obtained from the cyclic polarization curve tests were used as training data for the multiple linear regression model. The significance of each factor in the response (critical pitting potential, repassivation potential) was analyzed. The multiple linear regression model was validated using experimental conditions that were not included in the training data. As a result, the degree of sensitization showed a greater effect than the other variables. Multiple linear regression showed poor performance for prediction of repassivation potential. On the other hand, the model showed a considerable degree of predictive performance for critical pitting potential. The coefficient of determination (R2) was 0.7745. The possibility for pitting potential prediction was confirmed using multiple linear regression.
MOGABA is a project monitoring of gamma-ray bright AGN(Active Galactic Nuclei). Since May 2011, we have observed total flux, degree of linear polarization, and polarization angle of about twenty AGN once a week at 22, 43 and 86GHz using KVN(Korean VLBI Network) 21m radio telescopes. We have observed variation of total flux of BLLAC and OJ287 from May 2011 to March 2012. We have observed flares of total flux at 22GHz for those sources from October 2011 to November 2011. In this paper we report the variation of total flux, degree of linear polarization and polarization angle at 22, 43, 86GHz for BLLAC and OJ287.
COMS will transmit its observed data, Sensor Data, through L-Band with linear polarization. To avoid link loss caused by polarization discrepancy between satellite and SOC DATS, the L-Band antenna at SOC DATS should be linearly polarized. However, SOC DATS is supposed to share single antenna with SOC TTC, so the antenna should be circularly polarized. To cope with about 3dB loss, SOC DATS is designed to receive Sensor Data through two orthogonal circular polarizations, RHCP (Right-Hand Circular Polarization) and LHCP (Left-Hand Circular Polarization). Eventually, SOC DATS can obtain 2.6dB of combining gain through diversity combiner in MODEM/BB. This paper presents the verification on the diversity combining of SOC DATS with test configuration and results in depth.
A Fabry-Perot cavity (FPC) antenna producing both high-gain and circularly-polarized (CP) behavior is proposed. To increase antenna gain and obtain CP characteristics, a superstrate composed of square patches with a pair of truncated corners is placed above the linearly polarized patch antenna with an approximately half-wavelength distance from the ground plane at the operating frequency. The proposed antenna has the advantages of high gain, a simple design, and an excellent boresight axial ratio over the operating frequency bandwidth. Moreover, used in an FPC antenna, the proposed superstrate converts a linear polarization produced by a patch antenna into a circular polarization. In addition, the cavity antenna produces left-hand circular-polarization and right-hand circular-polarization when a patch antenna inside the cavity generates x-direction and y-direction polarization, respectively. The measured and simulated results verify the performance of the antenna.
We have experimentally demonstrated circular polarization generation from linear polarized soft X-ray at synchrotron by adopting a thin magnetic film polarizer. Polarizer is composed of Co/Pt multilayer with a perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, which allows us to easily accommodate without needing any tilting angle into the measurement setup since the circular polarization is generated for the X-ray with normal incidence and transmission. Generated circular polarization is examined by observing magnetic domain features based on the X-ray magnetic circular dichroism, where~11% of circular component is estimated compared to the case of full circular polarization.
This study using experimental design and linear regression technique was implemented in order to predict the pitting potential of stainless steel in marine environments, with the target materials being AL-6XN and STS 316L. The various variables (inputs) which affect stainless steel's pitting potential included the pitting resistance equivalent number (PRNE), temperature, pH, Cl- concentration, sulfate levels, and nitrate levels. Among them, significant factors affecting pitting potential were chosen through an experimental design method (screening design, full factor design, analysis of variance). The potentiodynamic polarization test was performed based on the experimental design, including significant factor levels. From these testing methods, a total 32 polarization curves were obtained, which were used as training data for the linear regression model. As a result of the model's validation, it showed an acceptable prediction performance, which was statistically significant within the 95% confidence level. The linear regression model based on the full factorial design and ANOVA also showed a high confidence level in the prediction of pitting potential. This study confirmed the possibility to predict the pitting potential of stainless steel according to various variables used with experimental linear regression design.
The signals obtained from the $5^{th}$-order (two-dimensional) Raman spectrum of a liquid can depend dramatically on the polarizations of the various light beams, but to date there has been no evidence presented that different polarization conditions probe any fundamentally different aspects of liquid dynamics. In order to explore the molecular significance of polarization we have carried out a molecular dynamics simulation of the $5^{th}$-order spectrum of a dilute solution of CS₂ in liquid Xe, perhaps the simplest system capable of displaying a full range of polarization dependencies. By focusing on the 5 distinct rotational invariants revealed by the different polarizations and by comparing our results with those from liquid Xe, a liquid whose spectrum has no significant polarization dependence, we discovered that the polarization experiments do, in fact, yield valuable microscopic information. With different linear combinations of the experimental response functions one can separate the part of the signal derived from the purely interaction-induced part of the many-body polarizability from the portion with the largest contributions from single-molecule polarizabilities. This division does not directly address the underlying liquid dynamics, but it significantly simplifies the interpretation of the theoretical calculations which do address this issue. We find that the different linear combinations differ as well in whether they exhibit nodal lines. Despite the absence of nodes with the atomic liquid Xe, observing the resilience of our solution's nodes when we artificially remove the anisotropy of our solute leads us to conclude that there is no direct connection between nodes and specifically molecular degrees of freedom.
Star forming galaxies found in the early universe exhibit asymmetric Lyα emission line that results from multiple scattering in a neutral thick medium surrounding the Lyα emission source. It is expected that emergent Lyα will be significantly polarized through a large number of resonance scattering events followed by a number of successive wing scatterings. In this study we adopt a Monte Carlo method to calculate the polarization of Lyα transferred in a very thick static slab of HI. Resonantly scattered radiation associated with transitions between is only weakly polarized and therefore linear polarization of the emergent Lyα is mainly dependent on the number of off-resonant wing scattering events. The number of wing scattering events just before escape from the slab is determined by the product of the Doppler parameter a and the line center optical depth τ0, which, in turn, determines the behavior of the linear polarization of Lyα. This result is analogous to the study of polarized radiative transfer of Thomson scattered photons in an electron slab, where the emergent photons are polarized in the direction perpendicular to the slab when the scattering optical depth is small and polarized in the parallel direction when the slab is optically thick. Our simulated spectropolarimetry of Lyα shows that the line center is negligibly polarized, the near wing parts polarized in the direction parallel to the slab and the far wing parts are polarized in the direction perpendicular to the slab. We emphasize that the flip of polarization direction in the wing parts of Lyα naturally reflects the diffusive nature of the Lyα transfer process in thick neutral media.
