  • A moving mass on a skewed linear guideway model to analyze the friction-induced stick-slip behavior of ball-screw-driven slides is proposed. To describe the friction force, a friction coefficient function is modelled as a third-order polynomial of the relative velocity between the slide mass and a guideway. A nonlinear differential equation of motion is derived and an approximate solution is obtained using a perturbation method for the amplitudes and base frequencies of both pure-slip and stick-slip oscillations. The results are presented with time responses, phase plots, and amplitude plots, which are compared adequately with those obtained by Runge Kutta 4th-order numerical integration, as long as the difference between the static and kinematic friction coefficients is small. However, errors in the results by the approximate solution increase and are not negligible if the difference between the friction coefficients exceeds approximately 40% of the static friction coefficient.

  • The friction and wear behaviors of MoS$_2$ coatings were investigated by using a pin and disk type tester. The experiment was conducted by using silicon nitride as pin material and MoS$_2$-on-bearing steel as disk material under different operating conditions that include linear sliding velocities in the range of 22-66 ㎜/sec, normal loads varying from 9.8 N to 29.4 N, corresponding to maximum contact pressures of 1.18-2.83 GPa and atmospheric conditions of high vacuum, medium vacuum, ambient air. The results showed that low friction coefficient of the coating has been identified in high vacuum and that friction coefficient and wear volume increased with increasing normal load. Also at high load conditions, the friction coefficient and wear volume increased with increasing sliding velocity.

  • This paper deals with the problem of friction measurement of an inverted pendulum system using the regression analysis and proposes a solution. The approach taken in this study is getting the friction from a regression relational expression between the motor voltage and the cart velocity of an inverted pendulum system. The result to compensate LQR (linear Quadratic Regulator) controller with the friction which is measured in system, improved the performance of the system. Above all, the study has found that the proposed compensation of the friction reduces the oscillation of the cart position. In conclusion, the proposed method is useful when parameters in the given system model are not known.

The experiment was conducted with silicon nitride as the pin material and MoS$_2$-on-bearing steel as the disk material under different operating conditions that included linear sliding velocities within a range of 2266 mm/sec, normal loads varying from 9.829.4 N, corresponding to maximum contact pressures of 1.782.83 Gpa, and high vacuum, medium vacuum, and ambient air atmospheric conditions. The results showed a low friction coefficient far the coating in a high vacuum, plus the friction coefficient and wear volume increased with an increased normal load. Furthermore, under high load conditions, the friction coefficient and wear volume also increased with an increased sliding velocity.

  • The purpose of this paper is to present a design procedure of coulomb friction dampers for controlling elastic and inelastic responses of building structures. The equivalent damping and frequency increased by the friction damper are estimated using ATC-40 and ATC-55 procedures which provide equivalent linear system for bilinear one, and then a design formula to achieve target performance response level by friction damper is presented. It is identified that there exists error between the responses obtained by this formula and by performing nonlinear analysis and the features of the error vary according to the hardening ratio, yield strength ratio, and structural period. Equations for compensating this er개r are reposed based on the least square method, and the results from numerical analyses indicate that the error is significantly reduced, and the proposed formula can be used without much error for designing coulomb friction damper for retrofitting a structure showing elastic or inelastic behavior.

  • In this paper, a fretting testing machine is developed using ball-on-flat test apparatus. Precise micro-slip motion is produced by a linear stage. A relative displacement between a ball and a flat specimen is measured with a laser displacement sensor. Dry friction tests are conducted with AISI 52100 steel balls and cold-rolled high strength steel plates at room temperature and ambient humidity. The evolution of the kinetic friction coefficient is determined. Comparison between measured friction coefficients and those found in the literature is then carried out. Fretting tests with an electro-deposited coating are employed at an amplitude of 0.05 mm. Slip regime is identified with slip ratio. It is demonstrated that a developed testing machine allows determining the friction coefficient under fretting condition.

  • In this paper, we propose an adaptive control algorithm to improve the position accuracy and reduce the nonlinear friction effects for linear motion servo system. Especially, the considered system includes not only the variation of the mass of the mover but also the friction change by the normal force. To adapt to these problems, we designed the controller with the mass estimator and the compensator by observing the variation of normal force. Finally, the numerical simulation results are presented in order to show the effectiveness of the proposed method to improve the position accuracy compared to other control methods.

  • A novel higher order shear-deformable beam model, which provides linear variation of transversal normal strain and quadratic variation of shearing strain, is proposed to describe the beam resting on foundation. Then, the traditional two-parameter Pasternak foundation model is modified to capture the effects of the axial deformation of beam. The Masing's friction law is incorporated to deal with nonlinear interaction between the foundation and the beam bottom, and the nonlinear properties of the beam material are also considered. To solve the mathematical problem, a displacement-based finite element is formulated, and the reliability of the proposed model is verified. Finally, numerical examples are presented to study the effects of the interfacial friction between the beam and foundation, and the mechanical behavior due to the tensionless characteristics of the foundation is also examined. Numerical results indicate that the effects of tensionless characteristics of foundation and the interfacial friction have significant influences on the mechanical behavior of the beam-foundation system.

  • This research paper proposes a novel methodology for predicting the optimal location of friction supports to effectively mitigate vibrational energy in piping systems. The incorporation of friction forces in the dynamic characteristics of the system introduces inherent nonlinearity, making its analysis challenging. Typically, numerical solutions in the time domain are employed to circumvent the complexities associated with finding analytic solutions for nonlinear systems. However, time domain analysis (TDA) can be computationally intensive and demand significant computational resources due to the intricate calculations stemming from nonlinearity. To address this computational burden, this study presents an efficient approach based on linear analysis to predict the ideal position for installing friction supports as a replacement for fixed supports. Furthermore, we investigate the relationship between the installation positions of friction supports and their effectiveness in absorbing vibrations using the harmonic balanced method (HBM). Both methodologies are validated by comparing the obtained results with those obtained through time domain analysis (TDA) using the finite element method (FEM).
