  • The fully automatic algorithm from initial finite element mesh generation to remeshing in two dimensional geometry is introduced using bubble packing method (BPM) for finite element analysis. BPM determines the node placement by force-balancing configuration of bubbles and the triangular meshes are made by Delaunay triangulation with advancing front concept. In BPM, we suggest two node-search algorithms and the adaptive/recursive bubble controls to search the optimal nodal position. To use the automatically generated mesh information in FEA, the new enhanced bandwidth minimization scheme with high efficiency in CPU time is developed. In the remeshing stage, the mesh refinement is incorporated by the control of bubble size using two parameters. And Superconvergent Patch Recovery (SPR) technique is used for error estimation. To verify the capability of this algorithm, we consider two elasticity problems, one is the bending problem of short cantilever beam and the tension problem of infinite plate with hole. The numerical results indicate that the algorithm by BPM is able to refine the mesh based on a posteriori error and control the mesh size easily by two parameters.

  • In this paper, a singularly perturbed ordinary differential equation with non-smooth data is considered. The numerical method is generated by means of a Petrov-Galerkin finite element method with the piecewise-exponential test function and the piecewise-linear trial function. At the discontinuous point of the coefficient, a special technique is used. The method is shown to be first-order accurate and singular perturbation parameter uniform convergence. Finally, numerical results are presented, which are in agreement with theoretical results.

  • Objective: To evaluate tooth displacement and periodontal stress generated by the dual action vertical intra-arch technique (DAVIT) for open-bite correction using three-dimensional finite element analysis. Methods: A three-dimensional model of the maxilla was created by modeling the cortical bone, cancellous bone, periodontal ligament, and teeth from the second molar to the central incisor of a hemiarch. All orthodontic devices were designed using specific software to reproduce their morpho-dimensional characteristics, and their physical properties were determined using Young's modulus and Poisson's coefficient of each material. A linear static simulation was performed to analyze the tooth displacements (mm) and maximum stresses (Mpa) induced in the periodontal ligament by the posterior intrusion and anterior extrusion forces generated by the DAVIT. Results: The first and second molars showed the greatest intrusion, whereas the canines and lateral incisors showed the greatest extrusion displacement. A neutral zone of displacement corresponding to the fulcrum of occlusal plane rotation was observed in the premolar region. Buccal tipping of the molars and lingual tipping of the anterior teeth occurred with intrusion and extrusion, respectively. Posterior intrusion generated compressive stress at the apex of the buccal roots and furcation of the molars, while anterior extrusion generated tensile stress at the apex and apical third of the palatal root surface of the incisors and canines. Conclusions: DAVIT mechanics produced a set of beneficial effects for open-bite correction, including molar intrusion, extrusion and palatal tipping of the anterior teeth, and occlusal plane rotation with posterior teeth uprighting.

  • This study deals with the dynamic characteristics analysis of Linear Induction Motor (LIM) using finite element method in which the moving mesh technique is considered. The focus of this paper is to show the appropriate of on-line observer system for position sensorless control of a LIM under the phase asymmetry, saturation and iron loss. Comparisons are given with angle of the observer and that of proposed FEA method of linear induction motor, respectively. The position sensorless control system is realized, and the effective of the observer system is verified by experimental results.

  • Detent force is produced in a permanent magnet linear machine. It is generally an undesired effect that contributes to the output ripple of machine, vibration and noise. This paper analyzes detent force in a Permanent Magnet Linear Synchronous Motor (PMLSM) by using various detent force minimization techniques. A two-dimensional Finite Element Method(FEM) is used to predict detent forces due to structural factors and non-linearity. And moving node technique for the drawing models is used to reduce modeling time and efforts.

  • The finite element technique incorporating infinite elements is applied to analyzing the general three dimensional wave-structure interaction problems within the limits of linear wave theory. The hydrodynamic farces are assumed to be inertially dominated, and viscous effects are neglected. In order to analyze the corresponding boundary value problems efficiently, two types of elements are developed. One is the infinite element for modeling the radiation condition at infinity, and the other is the fictitious bottom boundary element for the case of deep water. To validate those elements, numerical analyses are performed for several floating structures. Comparisons with the results from culler available solution methods show that the present method incorporating tile infinite and the fictitious bottom boundary elements gives good results.

  • The bubble stabilization technique of Chebyshev-Legendre high-order element methods for one dimensional advection-diffusion equation is analyzed for the proposed scheme by Canuto and Puppo in [8]. We also analyze the finite element lower-order preconditioner for the proposed stabilized linear system. Further, the numerical results are provided to support the developed theories for the convergence and preconditioning.

  • The purpose of this paper is to experimentally identify the finite element (FE) model of a building structure with magnetorheological (MR) fluid damper. Using FE model based system identification (FEBSI) technique, The model of MR damper having nonlinear characteristics is expressed with equivalent linear properties such as mass, stiffness, and damping. Bingham model is used for MR damper modeling. The equivalent stiffness and damping matrices of MR damper are predicted by applying an equivalent linearization technique, and those values are compared with the experimentally obtained ones.
