  • The linear thermal expansions of $UO_2$ and $(U_{1-y}Ce_y)O_2$ pellet were measured from room temperature to $1400^{\circ}C$ as a function of Ce contents (0, 7.63, 14.84, and $21.68 mol\%$) by using the TMA(Thermo-Mechanical Analysis) method. From the measured data, the linear thermal expansion rate, the coefficient of linear thermal expansion and density variation with temperature were calculated, and the best-fitted temperature-dependent equations were recommended. It was shown that the rate and coefficient of $(U_{1-y}Ce_y)O_2$ thermal expansion increased and the density decreased with increasing Ce contents.

  • This paper deals with the measurement theory and technique of linear expansion coefficient for solid material using Michelson interferometer. The Michelson interferometer produces interference fringes by splitting a beam of monochromatic light so that one beam strikes a fixed mirror and the other a movable mirror. When the reflected beams are brought back together, an interference pattern results. Precise distance measurements until a quarter of wave length can be made with the Michelson interferometer by moving the mirror and counting the interference fringes which move by a photo diode. This paper represents the application of Michelson interferometer for measuring infinitesimal length system and shows the measurement method of linear expansion coefficients for various materials like copper, aluminum and iron. the results are good agreement with theoretical value within margin of error for each materials.

  • Thermal expansion property of $SiO_2-Al_2O_3$ system consisted of Muan clay, Hadong Pink Kaolin and Dangjin Silica was studied. Specimens were heated at the constant rate of 18$0^{\circ}C$/hr to the max. temperatures of 115$0^{\circ}C$ to 130$0^{\circ}C$ with an interval of $25^{\circ}C$, and matured for 3hrs. The result of X-Ray diffraction analysis showed that main crystals formed were $\alpha$-quartz, $\alpha$-cristobalite and mullite. Linear thermal expansion was measured at 90$0^{\circ}C$. The results of the linear thermal expansion were decreased regularly with the increase of the sintering temperature in accordance with the following equation. $y=5$\chi$\perp1100^{\circ}$. Where $\chi$ is amounts of kaolin (wt%), and y is temperature of the changing point of linear thermal expansion.

  • The expansion capacity and strength of expansive grout have a significant influence on the stress state of a supported rock mass and the strength of a grout-rock mass structure. The expansion and strength characteristics are vital in grouting preparation and application. To analyze the expansion performance and mechanical properties of expansive grout, uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) tests, expansion ratio tests, XRD, SEM, and microscopic scanning tests (MSTs) of expansive grout under different curing pressure conditions were conducted. The microevolution was analyzed by combining the failure characteristics, XRD patterns, SEM images, and surface morphologies of the specimens. The experimental results show that: (1) The final expansion ratio of the expansive grout was linear with increasing expansion agent content and nonlinear with increasing curing pressure. (2) The strength of the expansive grout was positively correlated with curing pressure and negatively correlated with expansion agent content. (3) The expansion of expansive grout was related mainly to the development of calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) crystals. With an increase in expansion agent content, the final expansion ratio increased, but the expansion rate decreased. With an increase in the curing pressure, the grout expansion effect decreased significantly. (4) The proportion of the concave surfaces at the centre of the specimen cross-section reflected the specimen's porosity to a certain extent, which was linear with increasing expansion agent content and curing pressure.

  • Stretch-flangeability, which is the ability of sheet steels to be deformed into complex shapes, is a critical formability property in automobile body parts. In this study, the center-hole for hole expansion test, which is normally used to evaluate the stretch-flangeability of sheet steels, was prepared by both punching and electrical discharge machining (EDM) methods. Hole expansion ratio (HER) of punched hole was far lower than the HER of EDM drilled hole because of damage/crack in hole-edge due to punching process. The effect of hole-edge condition on HER was quantified by mechanical, fractographic and geometric factors. Based on these factors, the empirical equation used to determine HER for various sheet steels was derived using non-linear regression.

  • We calculate the benefit of distributed combined heat power generators from avoiding a transmission expansion cost by building distributed generators near electricity demand centers. We determine a transmission expansion plan by solving a mixed integer linear problem, where we modify capacities of existing transmission lines and build new transmission lines. We calculate the benefit by comparing the sum of generation and transmission expansion costs with or without distributed generators through two simulation frames. In the first frame, for the current demand, we substitute existing distributed generators for non-distributed generators and measure an additional cost to balance the generation and demand. In the second frame, for increased future demand, we compare the cost to invest only in distributed generators to the cost to invest only in non-distributed generators. As a result, we show that the distributed generators have at least 5.8 won/kWh of the benefit from avoiding the transmission expansion cost.

  • The first-order Taylor series expansion can be evaluated analytically from the formulated symbolic nonlinear dynamic equations. A closed-form linear dynamic euation is derived about a nominal trajectory. The state space representation of the linearized dynamics can be derived easily from the closed-form linear dynamic equations. But manual symbolic expansion of dynamic equations and linearization is tedious, time-consuming and error-prone. So it is desirable to manipulate the procedures using a computer. In this paper, the analytic linearization is performed using the symbolic language MATHEMATICA. Two examples are given to illustrate the approach anbd to compare nonlinear model with linear model.

  • As raw materials wollastonite, kaolin and pyrophyllite were used to synthesize mullite, anorthite and pseudowoll-astonite which were known as low thermal expansion substance. Increasing the amount of wollastonite in the composition resulted in a linear thermal expansion behavior. However, the increases of pyrophyllite indicated the relatively unstable themmal expansion behavior, because the phase transition occured in quartz of the pyrophyllite compositon. To lowering sintering temperature feldspar (Kebook and Anyang) were added in the composition that showed the linear thermal expantion behavior, and over 50'C were lowered.

  • The development of feed drive system with high speed and accuracy has been a major issue in the machine tool industry. Linear motors can be used as the efficient tool to achieve fast feed mechanism and high accuracy. However. a high speed feed drive system with linear motors can generate heat problems such as the variation of temperature distribution and the resultant thermal stress. In this paper, the important heat sources and the resultant thermal errors are presented. The thermal deformation characteristics of the machine tool with linear motors were identified, which are thermal expansion of linear scale, shrinkage, expansion and bending in the machine tool structure.
