  • Hankel transform of order 0 can be represented by a combination of Abel transform and Fourier transform. This Abel-Fourier method can offer computational advantages over a conventional digital linear filter method through the uses of a rapid Abel transform with shift variant recursive filter and of a fast Fourier transform. The Abel-Fourier method, however, is generally less accurate than a well-designed digital linear filter method. In geoelectrical applications, the digital linear filter method seems to be more flexible than the Abel-Fourier method.

  • The optimum weight design of structure is to determine the combination of structural members which minimize the weight of structures and satisfy design conditions as well. Since most of loads and design variables considered in structural design have uncertain natures, the reliability-based optimization techniques need to be developed. The aim of this study is to estabilish the general algorithm for the minimum weight design of transmission tower structure system with reliability constraints. The sequential linear programming method is used to solve non-linear minimization problems, which converts original non-linear programming problems to sequential linear programming problems. The optimal solutions are produced for various reliability levels such as reliability levels inherent in current standard transmission tower cross-section and optimal transmission tower cross-section obtained with constraints of current design criteria as well as selected target reliability index. The optimal transmission towers satisfying reliability constraints sustain consistent reliability levels on all members. Consequently, more balanced optimum designs are accomplished with less structural weight than traditional designs dealing with deterministic design criteria.

  • The conventional methods of boundary-conformed 2D surfaces generation usually yield some problems. This paper deals with two boundary-conformed 2D surface generation methods, one conventional approach, the linear Coons method, and a new method, boundary-conformed interpolation. In this new method, unidirectional 2D surface has been generated using some of the geometric properties of the given boundary curves. A method of simultaneous displacement of the interpolated curves from the opposite boundaries has been adopted. The geometric properties considered for displacements include weighted combination of angle bisector and linear displacement vectors at all the data-points of the two opposite generating curves. The algorithm has one adjustable parameter that controls the characteristics of transformation of one set of curves from its parents. This unidirectional process has been extended to bi-directional parameterization by superimposing two sets of unidirectional curves generated from both boundary pairs. Case studies show that this algorithm gives reasonably smooth transformation of the boundaries. This algorithm is more robust than the linear Coons method and capable of resolving the 2D boundary-conformed parameterization problems.

  • In this paper, a new linear synchronous motor - permanent magnet double-sided synchronous motor with perpendicular arrangement (PMDLSM), was proposed. It was designed to account for the drawbacks of conventional linear motors, such as the normal force and end effects. The detent force and the thrust were analyzed for different combinations of primary core modules and magnet poles of the machine, and the optimum combination was made. The characteristics of the perpendicular PMDLSM were analyzed by finite element method, and the experiments agreed well with the analysis.

  • The applicability of the algebraic collapsing acceleration (ACA) technique to the method of characteristics (MOC) in cases with scattering anisotropy and/or linear sources was investigated. Previously, the ACA was proven successful in cases with isotropic scattering and uniform (step) sources. A presentation is first made of the MOC implementation, available in the DRAGON5 code. Two categories of schemes are available for integrating the propagation equations: (1) the first category is based on exact integration and leads to the classical step characteristics (SC) and linear discontinuous characteristics (LDC) schemes and (2) the second category leads to diamond differencing schemes of various orders in space. The acceleration of these MOC schemes using a combination of the generalized minimal residual [GMRES(m)] method preconditioned with the ACA technique was focused on. Numerical results are provided for a two-dimensional (2D) eight-symmetry pressurized water reactor (PWR) assembly mockup in the context of the DRAGON5 code.

  • In this research a 2-dimensional motion generator composed of two linear motors was developed. The inertia, damping and/or stiffness characteristics of the motion generator can be changed on the real-time basis by properly regulating the force generated by the linear motors. That is, active impedance is implemented without actual change in the physical structure of the motion generator. Control of the motor force is carried out by controlling the input currents supplied to the linear motors based on the combination of the PI controller and feedforward controller. This motion generator can be used to measure a kinesthetic sense associated with the human arm and thus to develop the products for which the kinesthetic sense is taken into account.

  • The compensators used in spectroscopic ellipsometers are usually assumed to be ideal linear waveplates. In reality, however, they are elliptical waveplates, because they are usually made by bonding two or more linear waveplates of different materials with slight misalignment. This induces systematic error when they are modeled as linear waveplates. We propose an improved calibration method based on an optical model that regards an elliptical waveplate as a combination of a circular waveplate (rotator) and a linear waveplate. The method allows elimination of the systematic error, and the residual error of optic axis measurement is reduced to 0.025 degrees in the spectral range of 450-800 nm.

  • PURPOSES: Implementation and verification of the simple linear cohesive viscoelastic contact model that can be used to simulate dynamic behavior of sticky aggregates. METHODS: The differential equations were derived and the initial conditions were determined to simulate a free falling ball with a sticky surface from a ground. To describe this behavior, a combination of linear contact model and a cohesive contact model was used. The general solution for the differential equation was used to verify the implemented linear cohesive viscoelastic API model in the DEM. Sensitivity analysis was also performed using the derived analytical solutions for several combinations of damping coefficients and cohesive coefficients. RESULTS : The numerical solution obtained using the DEM showed good agreement with the analytical solution for two extreme conditions. It was observed that the linear cohesive model can be successfully implemented with a linear spring in the DEM API for dynamic analysis of the aggregates. CONCLUSIONS: It can be concluded that the derived closed form solutions are applicable for the analysis of the rebounding behavior of sticky particles, and for verification of the implemented API model in the DEM. The assumption of underdamped condition for the viscous behavior of the particles seems to be reasonable. Several factors have to be additionally identified in order to develop an enhanced contact model for an asphalt mixture.

  • Single-phase and three-phase load can be used together in 3-phase 4-wire system. Single-phase and three-phase loads can be classified as linear loads without harmonics and nonlinear with harmonics. Single-phase linear loads are linear loads such as lamps and heat, and single-phase nonlinear loads are power converters such as rectifiers. It is recommended that the distribution of loads in the 3-phase, 4-wire distribution lines be evenly distributed within a certain range. However, harmonic currents generated in a nonlinear load flow on the neutral line and affect the phase current magnitude. The difference in the magnitude of the individual phase current due to the influence of the harmonic current present in the neutral line can produce a difference in current and load unbalance. In this study, current unbalance ratio and load unbalance ratio which can occur when a combination of linear and nonlinear loads are applied to 3-phase 4-wire distribution line are calculated.

  • The Joint Video Experts Team (JVET) has been working on the development of next generation of video coding standard called Versatile Video Coding (VVC). Position Dependent Intra Prediction Combination (PDPC) which is one of the major tools for intra prediction refines the prediction through a linear combination between the reconstructed samples and the predicted samples according to the sample position. In VVC WD6, nScale which is shift value that adjusts the weight is determined by the width and height of the current block. It may cause that PDPC is applied to regions that do not fit the characteristics of the current intra prediction mode. In this paper, we define nScale for each width and height so that the weight can be applied independently to the left and top reference samples, respectively. Experimental results show that, compared to VTM 6.0, the proposed method gives -0.01%, -0.04% and 0.01% Bjotegaard-Delta (BD)-rate performance, for Y, Cb, and Cr components, respectively, in All-Intra (AI) configuration.
