  • This paper aims to assess the seismic risk of a plane moment-resisting frames (MRFs) consisting of concrete-filled double skin steel tube (CFDST) columns and I-section steel beams. Firstly, three typical limit performance levels of CFDST structures are determined in accordance with the cyclic tests of seven CFDST joint specimens with 1/2-scaled and the limits stipulated in FEMA 356. Then, finite element (FE) models of the test specimens are built by considering with material degradation, nonlinear behavior of beam-column connections and panel zones. The mechanical behavior of the concrete material are modeled in compression stressed condition in trip-direction based on unified strength theory, and such numerical model were verified by tests. Besides, numerical models on 3, 6 and 9-story CFDST frames are established. Furthermore, the seismic responses of these models to earthquake excitations are investigated using nonlinear time-history analyses (NTHA), and the limits capacities are determined from incremental dynamic analyses (IDA). In addition, fragility curves are developed for these models associated with 10%/50yr and 2%/50yr events as defined in SAC project for the region on Los Angeles in the Unite State. Lastly, the annual probabilities of each limits and the collapse probabilities in 50 years for these models are calculated and compared. Such results provide risk information for the CFDST-MRFs based on the probabilistic risk assessment method.

  • In this paper, transition constrained Hidden Markov Model(HMM) in which the transition between states occur only within prescribed time slot is proposed and the performance is evaluated in the noisy environment. The transition constrained HMM can explicitly limit the state durations and accurately de scribe the temporal structure of speech signal simply and efficiently. The transition constrained HMM is not only superior to the conventional HMM but also require much less computation time. In order to evaluate the performance of the transition constrained HMM, speaker independent isolated word recognition experiments were conducted using semi-continuous HMM with the noisy speech for 20, 10, 0 dB SNR. Experiment results show that the proposed method is robust to the environmental noise. The 81.08% and 75.36% word recognition rates for conventional HMM was increased by 7.31% and 10.35%, respectively, by using transition constrained HMM when two kinds of noises are added with 10dB SNR.

  • To improve the $NO_X$ conversion over a SCR (selective catalytic reduction) catalyst, the DOC (diesel oxidation catalyst) is usually placed upstream of the SCR catalyst to enhance the fast SCR reaction ($4NH_3+2NO+2NO_2{\rightarrow}4N_2+6H_2O$) using equimolar amounts of NO and $NO_2$. Here, a ratio of $NO_2/NO_X$ above 50% should be avoided, because the reaction with $NO_2$ only ($4NH_3+4NO+O_2{\rightarrow}4N_2+6H_2O$) is slower than the standard SCR reaction ($4NH_3+4NO+O_2{\rightarrow}4N_2+6H_2O$). In order to accurately predict the performance characteristics of SCR catalysts, it is therefore desired to develop a more simple and reliable mathematical and kinetic models on the oxidation kinetics of nitric oxide over a DOC. In the present work, the prediction accuracy and limit of three different chemical reaction kinetics models are presented to describe the chemicophysical characteristics and conversion performance of DOCs. Steady-state experiments with DOCs mounted on a light-duty four-cylinder 2.0-L turbocharged diesel engine then are performed, using an engine-dynamometer system to calibrate the kinetic parameters such as activation energies and preexponential factors of heterogeneous reactions. The reaction kinetics for NO oxidation over Pt-based catalysts is determined in conjunction with a transient one-dimensional (1D) heterogeneous plug flow reactor (PFR) model with diesel exhaust gas temperatures in the range of 115~$525^{\circ}C$ and space velocities in the range of $(0.4{\sim}6.5){\times}10^5\;h^{-1}$.

  • Methods for mixing variable types of steel fibers have been developed recently to suppress outbreak of crack or to control the width of crack and improve the load resistible capacity at the same time. On the other hand, uncertainty by complex nature of destruction dynamics of steel fiber reinforced concrete(SFRC) is included. In this study, analysis of reliance considering uncertainty of SFRC beam is done. For this, intensity limit state model was proposed. Moreover, characteristic values about almost every kinds of probability variables were collected and presented according to home and foreign references. Process of improving uncertainty from the result of experiments by Bayseian updating method is also proposed on the purpose of offering better statistical characteristic values with more data in the new future. Fatigue fracture probability equation is proposed and needed statistical characteristic values were presented to analyze fatigue reliance

  • In Korean construction industry, a public sector's ordering volume has been constantly increased after 2000. But, because a cost, schedule and quality control generally depends on a result-centric management form and a transparent management is not done during the construction in the Korean public business, it is recognized that this causes problems including an increase of cost and schedule, incomplete construction, a difficulty to find the problem in advance to establish measures, and an unclear locus of responsibility of constructor, supervisor and designer. Accordingly, this study is intended to derive the problems and the limit of management by identifying and analyzing the management state of the present government construction client for the client organization of public sector's government construction. Also, the study is intended to contribute to the client's efficient and actual project management by presenting the model of supplementing or improving the derived problem and limits to the client's organization.

  • This research developed a flood fragility curve of bridges considering the debris impacts. Damage and failures of civil infrastructure due to natural disasters can cause casualties as well as social and economic losses. Fragility analysis is an effective tool to help better understand the vulnerability of a structure to possible extreme events, such as earthquakes and floods. In particular, flood-induced failures of bridges are relatively common in Korea, because of the mountainous regions and summer concentrated rainfall. The main failure reasons during floods are reported to be debris impact and scour; however, research regarding debris impacts is considered challenging due to various uncertainties that affect the failure probability. This study introduces a fragility analysis methodology for evaluating the structural vulnerability due to debris impacts during floods. The proposed method describes how the essential components in fragility analysis are considered, including limit-state function, intensity measure of the debris impact, and finite element model. A numerical example of the proposed fragility analysis is presented using a bridge pier system under a debris impact.

  • For the design of Concrete-Filled Steel Tube(CFST) columns, the outside diameter D to the steel tube thickness t ratio(D/t ratio) is limited to prevent the local buckling of steel tubes. Each design code proposes the respective model to compute the maximum D/t ratio using the yield strength of steel $f_y$ or $f_y$ and the elastic modulus of steel E. Considering the uncertainty in $f_y$ and E, the reliability index ${beta}$ for the local buckling of a CFST section can be calculated by formulating the limit state function including the maximum D/t models. The resulted ${beta}$ depends on the maximum D/t model used for the reliability analysis. This variability in reliability analysis is due to ambiguity in choosing computational models and it is called as "modelling uncertainty." This uncertainty can be considered as "non-specificity" of an epistemic uncertainty and modelled by constructing possibility distribution functions. In this study, three different computation models for the maximum D/t ratio are used to conduct reliability analyses for the local buckling of a CFST section and the reliability index ${beta}$ will be computed respectively. The "non-specific ${beta}s$" will be modelled by possibility distribution function and a metric, degree of confirmation, is measured from the possibility distribution function. It is shown that the degree of confirmation increases when ${beta}$ decreases. Conclusively, a new set of reliability indices associated with a degree of confirmation is determined and it is allowed to decide reliability index for the local buckling of a CFST section with an acceptable confirmation level.

  • A derivation of new release limit, named Derived Release Limit(DRL), into the atomsphere from a reference nuclear power plant has been performed on the basis of the new system of dose limitation recommended by the ICRP, instead of the (MPC)a limit which has been currently used until now as a general standard for radioactive effluents in Korea. In DRL Calculation, a Concentration Factor Method was applied, in which the concentrations of long-term routinely released radionuclides were in equilibrium with dose in environment under the steady state condition. The analytical model used in the exposure pathway analysis was the one which has been suggested by the USNRC and the exposure limits applied in this analysis were those recommended by the USEPA lately. In the exposure pathway analysis, all of the pathways are not considered and some may be excluded either because they are not applicable or their contribution to the exposure is insignificant compared with other pathways. In case, the environmental model developed in this study was applied to the Kori nuclear power plant as the reference power plant, the highest DRL value was calculated to be as $9.10{\times}10^6Ci/yr$ for Kr-85 in external whole body exposure from the semi-infinite radioactive cloud, while the lowest DRL value was observed 3.64Ci/yr for Co-60 in external whole body exposure from the contaminated ground, by the radioactive particulates. The most critical exposure pathway to an individual in the unrestricted area of interest (Kilchun-Ri, 1.3 km to the north of the release point) seems to be the exposure pathway from the contaminated ground and the most critical radionuclide in all pathways appears to be Co-60 in the same pathway. When comparing the actual release rate from KNU-l in 1982 with the DRL's obtained here the release of radionuclides from KNU-1 were much lower than the DRL's and it could be conclued that the exposure to an individual had been kept below the exposure limits recommended by the USEPA.

  • This paper presents the results of performance verification tests of the isolated flat plate apartment building with the laminated rubber bearings. The shaking table test is carried out in CABR(China Academy of Building Research) with two 1/10 scale isolation and non-isolation models under 4 excitation waves. The shaking table test is proceeding from x axis, y axis and x+y axis with different amplitude of acceleration values. The results show that, to non-isolated model, the natural vibration period is remarkably decreased and entered non-linear condition after moderate earthquake. Its accelerations become lager with increasing storey number and completely collapsed under large earthquake. The inter-storey shifts largely exceed the limit values of regulated displacement angles. But to isolated model, the natural vibration period of isolated modal is almost the same in all conditions and still in its elastic condition. The earthquake loading is greatly reduced and the accelerations of superstructure are greatly reduced. The inter-storey drifts are very small and can be neglected. The isolated model is in translational state and can be seen as a rigid whole. The displacements of isolation layer are in the allowable range. This experiment demonstrates that the seismic isolation is very effective to mitigate the influence of earthquake on structures and it is possible to increase the serviceability due to decrease the floor acceleration. facilities from their good states that is superior to non-isolated structure.

  • This paper describes the design and evaluation of a driving mode decision algorithm for automated driving for merge situations on highways. For the development of a highly automated driving control algorithm for merge situations, the driving mode decision is crucial for merging appropriately. There are two driving modes: lane keeping and lane changing (merging). The merge mode decision is determined based on the state of the surrounding vehicles and the remaining length of the merge lane. In the merge mode decision algorithm, merge possibility and the desired merge position are decided to change the lane safely and quickly. A safety driving envelope is defined based on the desired driving mode using the information on the surrounding vehicles' behaviors. To obtain the desired steering angle and longitudinal acceleration for maintaining the subject vehicle in the safe driving envelope, a motion planning controller is designed using model predictive control (MPC), with constraints that are decided considering the vehicle dynamics, safe driving envelope, and actuator limit. The proposed control algorithm has been evaluated via computer simulation studies.
