Heat Analysis of Built-In Spindle Motor for High-Speed Machine Tools (공작기계용 고속 내장형 스핀들 모터의 열 해석)

  • The built-in spindle motor for high-speed machine tools is designed and developed by Corporate R&D Institute of DAEWOO Heavy Industries LTD. The heat analysis program for the built-in spindle motor is developed by using lumped method. For the purpose of verification of the program comparison analyses between experiments and calculations are performed on the three motors ; DHI prototype of built-in spindle motor built-in spindle motor sample A and sample B As results calculated temperature distributions are in good agreement with the test results within the average error of 10% Calculated results of all the built-in spindle motors show that maximum temperature rise at high speed remains in the operating condition without exceeding the permitted limit but they exceeded the permitted limit of temperature rise at low speed.

  • In this paper, the critical vibration limits of a spindle unit for a high speed ball pen tip processing machine are studied. The vibration of the spindle is measured by FFT, and the influence of the vibration amplitude due to unbalance, bearing deflect, bite, and timing belts tension is analyzed. The critical vibration limits of the spindle is determined by the X, and Z directional vibrations of the spindle. Both FET and RMS values can be used to analyze the vibration characteristics of the spindle. From experimental results the limit line can be drawn for the spindle. The RMS value for the vibration limit is 3 G.

  • Magnetic encoder with relatively low pulse per rotation is generally used for detecting speed of the high-speed rotating machine. It is due to the fact of the mechanical problems of vibration and bearing stiffness and also the limit of maximum output pulse of the mounted encoder. The magnetic encoder is divided into two types, that is, toothed gear-wheel method and magnetic wheel method according to the shape of the rotation disk. In case of detecting speed by the tooth gear-wheel, the encoder itself can be acted as the additional inertia where the number of tooth determining the output pulse and the width of the wheel detecting the change of the magnetic flux density are relatively enough large considering the volume of the rotating machine. While the magnetic wheel method has the limit of the magnetizing number of the ring magnet, there is relatively few, if nv, the influence of inertia on the machine. In this paper, it is proposed a simple magnetic wheel encoder suited for the high speed rotating machine and the method of signal processing and the output characteristics are examined through the V/F operation of max 48,000(rpm) and 2.4(KW) spindle motor.

  • A high-speed spindle can be very sensitive to rotating mass unbalance which has harmful effect on many machine tools. Therefore, the balancing procedure to reducevibration in rotating system is certainly needed for all high-speed spindles. An active balancing program using influence coefficient method and an active balancing device of an electro-magnetic type have been applied to the developed high-speed spindle system in this study. A reliable gain-scheduling control using influence coefficients of the reference model although system characteristics are changed is applied. The stability of reference influence coefficients is verified by frequency response functions. The active balancing experiment for the developed high-speed spindle during operation is well performed with an active balancing program and device. As a result, controlled unbalance responses are below the vibration limit at all rotating speed ranges with critical speed.

  • This study adopted the ultra precision machining system which was composed of an air bearing spindle, a granite bed, air pad and a linear feeding mechanism. It also applied the cutting experiment on the aluminum alloy. To evaluate the safety of high speed machining, we examined the surface roughness according to the changes of cutting speed and obtained the speed limit. This paper also studied the effect of cutting condition such as feed rates and depths of cut on the surface roughness within the speed limit. This provided practical information regarding ultra precision machining.

  • In the machine tool spindle, various tasks ranging from roughing to finishing must be possible, and the functions of constant speed movement or rotation positioning must be performed. Therefore, there are many variables to be considered in the spindle design. The Swiss Turn Type spindle automatic lathe is a good machine tool for working pins with thinner shafts than a fixed automatic lathe. The Swiss Turn Type spindle is mainly used for precision machining of small products, so the machining precision should be high. The maximum outer diameter limit shall be Ø32 and the inner diameter limit shall be Ø6. In this study, the static and dynamic characteristics of the SCM440 material used in the spindle type automatic lathe were analyzed by applying it to the Swiss turn type spindle automatic lathe. Numerical analysis was used to obtain optimal design technique with high speed and high accuracy considering the factors affecting the static and dynamic characteristics of the spindle.

  • Recently, Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor(PMSM) drives are widely used for industrial applications due to its high efficiency and high power factor control strategy. PMSM generally have two classifications such as the SPMSM(Surface Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors) and IPMSM(Inter Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors). IPMSA has economical merits over SPMSM in higher speed range, mechanical robustness, and higher power rate by the geometric difference. The maximum torque operation in IPMSM is realized by the current angle control which is to utilize additional reluctance torque due to a rotor saliency. In traction, spindle and compressor drives, constant power operation with higher speed range are desirable. This is simply achieved in the DC motor drives by the reduction of the field current as the speed is increased. However, in the PMSM, direct control of the magnet flux is not available. The airgap flux can be weakened by the appropriate current angle control to demagnetize. In this paper, the control method of optimal current vector in IPMSM is described in order to obtain the maximum torque or maximum output with the speed and load variations. The applied algorithm is realized by the proto system with torque and speed control Experimental results show this approach is satisfied for the high performance servo applications.   • In the last couple of years, the flexible optical disk(FOD) system that consists of a thin polycarbonate(PC) film of 95 ${\mu}m$ thick, a rigid stabilizer, and a high speed spindle motor has been spot-lighted as the next-generation optical system for archival use of digital data. The air film between the rotating disk and stabilizer provides a means for damping out the lateral disk vibrations. However, its damping-capability drops significantly as the rotational speed of the disk exceeds a specific limit and, eventually, the disk vibration propagates inward causing the whole span of the disk exhibits large vibration amplitudes. Based on the numerical simulations as well as the experimental results, the present work aims to evaluate the damping coefficient of the air-film near the outer region of the disk where the capillary type orifices are applied to the edge of the curved stabilizer.

  • In the ball end-milling process of a 3-dimensional mold, it is important to select cutting conditions and tool path considering the geometrical shape of a workpiece to reduce machining time. In this study, experiments were performed to decide allowable feed rate not breaking stability of system for different geometrical shapes. It was found that downcut is more stable than upcutting in machining side wall and downward is preferable to upward in inclined part depending on the angle of the inclination and depth of cut.

Micro-drilling for fabricating MCP (MCP 제조를 위한 미소구멍가공에 관한 연구)

  • An MCP (Microchannel Plate) is a secondary electron multiplier to detect and amplify electrons. An MCP has many rnicrochannels whose diameters range from 10 to 100pm and whose lengths range from 40 to 100times of the diameter. Each microchannel of the MCP amplifies electrons over IOOOtimes by the secondary electron emission. Even though MCPs have high performance for electron amplification, the application of MCPs is limited to high performance electronic equipments because of their high fabricating cost and the limit of increasing their size due to the conventional fabrication process. Therefore, in this work, microchannels of the MCP are manufactured by micro-drilling to reduce the cost of the MCP and to increase their size. Alumina green body with epoxy binder was machined for fabricating microchannels using a high speed air turbine spindle and micro-drills with diamond grinding abrasives. Then alumina MCP was fabricated through the sintering of the machined alumina green body.
