  • In a speed_controlled system with cascade control which shows an optimal performance in the linear case, limit cycles can occur due to backlash. The various effects observed can be explained with the aid of the describing function. With a first-order load torque observer these limit cycles can be avoided. Moreover the dynamic performance improves considerably and the range of application of cascade control is extended.

  • A novel approach based on a nonlinear compensator is proposed to prevent 'windup', which is caused by the saturation of the actuator and the integration action of the controller. The anti-windup compensator is located between the conventional linear controller, designed neglecting the saturation, and the actuator. It was proven based on the describing function method that, if the closed loop control systems are stable assuming no saturation, then there exist a range of compensator gain which prevents any limit-cycle and hence, guarantees the system stability. The computer simulation results show that the compensator proposed in the manuscript can eliminate unstable limit cycle and improve the transient response.

  • Most of machines are physically or chemically degenerated by continuous usage. There- fore, a preventive maintenance is necessary. Producing defects are caused by process shift in mean and variance which are due to three types of degeneration. We develope the function of process variance from the experimental data and determine the optimal tool wear limit and the initial setting position of tool by considering the percent defective cost and the preventive maintenance cost.

  • In this paper we consider functionals of the empirical age distribution of supercritical Bellman-Harris processes. Let f : R+ longrightarrow R be a measurable function that integrates to zero with respect to the stable age distribution in a supercritical Bellman-Harris process with no extinction. We present sufficient conditions for the asymptotic normality of the mean of f with respect to the empirical age distribution at time t.

  • In this paper, we give definitions for common limit in the range property of mappings and obtain common fixed point theorem for a pair of weakly compatible functions in intuitionistic fuzzy metric space using the joint common limit in the range property of mappings(shortly, (JCLR) property). Our results improve and generalize results of Chauhan et al[1].

An Examination on the Singularoty of Grad Moment Equation for Shock Wave Problems

  • It has been well known that the Grad thirteen-moment equations have solutions only when the Mach number is less than a limiting value for the stationary plane shock-waves. The limit of Mach number has been re-examined by including successive terms in the series expansion of distribution function. The method employed is the linear analysis of moment equations near up-streaming and down-streaming flows. For the thirteen moment case, it has been confirmed that equations have solutions only when the Mach number is less than 1.6503, which is consistent with the literature value. For the case of twenty moments, the limit of Mach number is decreased to 1.3416.

  • Convergence to a steady state in the long term limit is established for global weak solutions to a chemotaxis model with degenerate local sensing and consumption, when the motility function is C1-smooth on [0, ∞), vanishes at zero, and is positive on (0, ∞). A condition excluding that the large time limit is spatially homogeneous is also provided. These results extend previous ones derived for motility functions vanishing algebraically at zero and rely on a completely different approach.

  • A methodology to evaluate fatigue vulnerability of steel bridge members affected by corrosion and truck traffic variation is proposed. A fatigue limit state function including corrosion and traffic variation effects is established to make the criterion whether the steel bridge member is damaged by fatigue. Corrosion effects are expressed as increase of the average corrosion depth, and the traffic variation effects are modeled as the accumulated number of stress cycles. Reliability analysis is carried out by Monte-Carlo simulation method for the fatigue limit state function. The methodology Proposed is verified by comparing reference study and applying for the steel bridge in service.

A Kolmogorov-Smirnov-Type Test for Independence of Bivariate Failure Time Data Under Independent Censoring

  • We propose a Kolmogorov-Smirnov-type test for independence of paired failure times in the presence of independent censoring times. This independent censoring mechanism is often assumed in case-control studies. To do this end, we first introduce a process defined as the difference between the bivariate survival function estimator proposed by Wang and Wells (1997) and the product of the product-limit estimators (Kaplan and Meier (1958)) for the marginal survival functions. Then, we derive its asymptotic properties under the null hypothesis of independence. Finally, we assess the performance of the proposed test by simulations, and illustrate the proposed methodology with a dataset for remission times of 21 pairs of leukemia patients taken from Oakes(1982).
