  • We propose a cubic differential system, which can be considered a generalization of the predator-prey models, studied by many authors recently (see [18, 20], for instance) The properties of the equilibrium points, the existences, nonexistence, the uniqueness conditions and the relative positions of the limit cycles are investigated. An example is used to show our theorems are easy to be used in applications.

  • Nonlinear frictions which generate many problems in control system exist in almost all the servor control systems. In this paper, the design procedure which employs $H_\infty$ integral controller including two integrators with performance weight is proposed to improve performance of the control system. Limit cycles are unavoidable by the effect of interaction between two integrators and coulomb friction in these system. The describing function method is used to check the limit cycles and determine the coefficients of performance weights to minimize the effect of the limit cycles.

  • It has been reported that neural network with cyclic connections generates limit cycles. The dynamics of discrete time network with cyclic connections has been analyzed. But the dynamics of cyclic network in continuous time has not been known well due to its huge calculation complexity. In this paper, we study the dynamics of the continuous time network with cyclic connections and the effect of chaotic signal in the network for transitions between limit cycles.

  • The intuitive understanding of the dynamic pattern generation in asymmetric networks may be useful for developing models of dynamic information processing. In this paper, dynamic behavior of the cyclic connection neural network, in which each neuron is connected only to its nearest neurons with binary synaptic weights of $\pm$ 1, has been investigated. Simulation results show that dynamic behavior of the network can be classified into only three categories: fixed points, limit cycles with basin and limit cycles with no basin. Furthermore, the number and the type of limit cycles generated by the networks have been derived through analytical method. The sufficient conditions for a state vector of $n$-neuron network to produce a limit cycle of $n$- or 2$n$-period are also given. The results show that the estimated number of limit cycles is an exponential function of $n$. On the basis of this study, cyclic connection neural network may be capable of storing a large number of dynamic information.

  • It is well-known that a neural network with cyclic connections generates plural limit cycles, thus, being used as a memory system for storing large number of dynamic information. In this paper, a continuous-time cyclic connection neural network was built so that each neuron is connected only to its nearest neurons with binary synaptic weights of ${\pm}1$. The type and the number of limit cycles generated by such network has also been demonstrated through simulation. In particular, the effect of chaos signal for transition between limit cycles has been tested. Furthermore, it is evaluated whether the chaotic noise is more effective than random noise in the process of the dynamical neural networks.

  • In a speed_controlled system with cascade control which shows an optimal performance in the linear case, limit cycles can occur due to backlash. The various effects observed can be explained with the aid of the describing function. With a first-order load torque observer these limit cycles can be avoided. Moreover the dynamic performance improves considerably and the range of application of cascade control is extended.

  • Limit cycle oscillations of a two-dimensional airfoil with quadratic and cubic pitching nonlinearities are investigated. The equivalent stiffness of the pitching stiffness is obtained by combining the linearization and harmonic balance method. With the equivalent stiffness, the equivalent linearization method for nonlinear flutter analysis is generalized to address aeroelastic system with quadratic nonlinearity. Numerical example shows that good approximation of the limit cycle can be obtained by the generalized method. Furthermore, the proposed method is capable of revealing the unsymmetry of the limit cycle; however the ordinary equivalent linearization method fails to do so.

  • SM45C steel rods being used generally for power transmission shafts and machine components was selected and welded by Butt-GMAW(Gas Metal Arc Welding) method. An estimation of fatigue life was studied by constructing S-N curve. Fatigue strength of base metal zone showed higher values than one of weld zone in low cycles between $10^4$ and $10^6$cycles. However, significant decrease in fatigue strength of base metal was found around $10^6$cycles, which were almost same as one of heat affected zone. This decrease was attributed that initial residual stress of the steel rods distributed by drawing process was diminished by continually applied load, and resulted in softening of base metal. The fatigue limit of the weld zone was highest in the boundary between deposited metal zone and heat affected zone, and followed by in the order of deposited metal zone, base metal zone, and heat affected zone. Based on these results, it is revealed that the stress for safety design of machine components using SM45C butt-welded steel rods must be selected within the region of the lowest fatigue limit of heat affected zone.

  • Not all loads contribute to fatigue crack propagation in the welded detail of steel bridges when they are subjected to variable amplitude loading. For fatigue assessment, therefore, non-contributing stress cycles should be truncated. However, stress range truncation is not considered during typical fatigue reliability assessment. When applying the first order reliability method, stress range truncation occurs mismatch between the expected number of cycles to failure and the number of cycles obtained at the time of evaluation, because the expected number of cycles only counts the stress cycles that contribute to fatigue crack growth. Herein, we introduce a calibration factor to coordinate the expected number of cycles to failure to the equivalent value which includes both contributing and non-contributing stress cycles. The effectiveness of stress range truncation and the proposed calibration factor was validated via case studies.
