Large-scale cultivation of Microcystis aeruginosa in different light conditions was conducted for verifying the cell growth in a greenhouse system. Environmental and chemical parameters of the large-scale culture medium were measured for analyzing the interaction between M. aeruginosa and its symbiotic bacteria. During cultivation, a difference in cell growth pattern was observed between control (natural light) and light-limited groups (reduction of blue, green, and blue/green light, respectively). Comparing the control group, the light reduced groups showed slow and delayed cell growth through the cultivation period. Also, there is differences in the consuming pattern of total nitrogen and total phosphorus which indicated that the possibility of interaction between M. aeruginosa and symbiotic bacteria.
CCD time series photometry was performed for two Oosterhoff type II field RR Lyrae stars, SV Eri and XX And, to construct light curves in B and V bands. The maximum light times from our observations were combined with those in the literature to construct phase shift diagrams, from which we determined the period change rates ${\beta}$. We obtained large positive period change rates for these stars, which are expected from current evolutionary models if these stars are evolving rapidly from blue to red toward the end of core helium burning phase.
The long-term observational properties of the photometric behaviors of the short period(p=0.48 day) eclipsing binary system XY UMa are discussed. They are based on the UBV observatins, which were carried out by Geyer in the yaers 1955-1961, 1968, 1975-1984. Light curves of XY UMa revealed very large changes not only between consecutive observing nights, but also from season to season. Between 1955 and 1984, the mean system brightness increased about 30% during this time interfvals, meanwhile, the orbital period of this system was constant whithin 1.6% of its period. The colour index curve shows similar variations like the light curve but with a phase offset oscillation around the time instants of the primary minama. Observational evidence for photospheric and chromospheric activities on the XY Uma are also discussed.
Based on Faraday effect, the variation of current flowing through the conductor can be encoded as that of azimuth angle of light polarization propagating through the fiber coil wound onto the conductor. The amount of current can be obtained by measuring the variation of the light intensity transformed from that of the azimuth angle through a polarization analyzer. In this paper we propose a fiber-optic current sensor system that employs a fiber polarization analyzer as a sensor interrogation device. The fiber polarization analyzer was prepared by inscribing a long-period fiber grating on a high birefringent fiber. At the fixed wavelength of 1522.5 nm, the fabricated fiber device has the polarization extinction ratio of more than 25 dB. The measurement of large current up to 600 Arms was accomplished based on a simple fiber interrogation device and the measurement output of the sensor system showed a good linearity.
To study properties of the pulsation in the infrared emission for long period variables, we have collected and analyzed the infrared observational data at M band for 12 OH/IR stars. We present the light curves using the data that cover about 30 years including recent observations of ISO and Spitzer. We use Marquardt-Levenberg algorithm to determine the pulsation periods and amplitudes and compare them with previous results of infrared and radio investigations. Generally, the newly determined pulsation parameters show much less errors because of the larger database. We find that the relationship between the pulsation period and amplitudes at M band is fairly well fitted with a simple linear equation in a wide period range. For OH 42.3-0.1, we find some evidences that the object could be a post-asymptotic giant branch star.
We propose a new pH-sensing scheme using a methylene blue adsorption on an optical fiber cladding surface. Interactions between the silica and hydroxyl ions of a base solution induce the surface of the silica negatively charged. The charged surface attracts the positively charged chromophores of methylene blue. As the pH of the solution is reduced, the electrostatic attraction will also be reduced. This electrostatic attraction can change the transmitted light intensity of the cladding mode, since the boundary condition changes. We also carried out a simulation to verify the effect from external refractive index change around a long-period fiber grating. Our results confirm that the wavelength shift by external refractive index change is negligible compared to the transmitted light intensity variation of the cladding mode. By using a long-period grating pair, we can detect the cladding mode transmittance variations. Experimentally, we showed the possibility of pH sensing in the $1.5{\mu}m$ infrared region.
Oxygen consumption (OC) of male black porgy Acanthopagrus schlegelii reared in freshwater (BFW) and seawater (BSW) during the reproductive period was $165.4{\pm}11.0$, $77.6{\pm}8.0$ mg $O_2/kg/h$ at $15^{\circ}C$, $186.2{\pm}13.1$, $133.4{\pm}6.7$ mg $O_2/kg/h$ at $20^{\circ}C$ and $267.9{\pm}19.1$, $198.6{\pm}8.3$ mg $O_2/kg/h$ at $25^{\circ}C$, respectively. During the non-reproductive period, it was shown as $174.0{\pm}7.0$, $85.6{\pm}5.5$ mg $O_2/kg/h$ at $15^{\circ}C$, $200.6{\pm}11.1$, $119.2{\pm}8.7$ mg $O_2/kg/h$ at $20^{\circ}C$ and $271.1{\pm}7.5$, $194.7{\pm}16.7$ mg $O_2/kg/h$ at $25^{\circ}C$, respectively. Thus, OC of BFW was higher than BSW both for non-reproductive and reproductive period. Also, OC increased in proportion to the rise in water temperature, and there was no difference of OC between BFW and BSW at each water temperature during the reproductive or non-reproductive period. OC of BFW and BSW showed clear circadian rhythms on photic conditions of reproductive and non-reproductive period, and the fish consumed more oxygen during the dark phase than for the light phase. In particular, OC of BFW during the reproductive period increased more sharply compared to non-reproductive period when the increase of water temperature was accompanied by the shift from dark to light phase. This implies that they react to the light more sensitively for reproductive period than for non-reproductive period.
Zeaxanthin is an important pigment in the photo-protection mechanism of microalgae. However, zeaxanthin epoxidase, an enzyme involved in the accumulation and conversion of zeaxanthin, has not been extensively studied in microalgae. In this work, we report the expression pattern of zeaxanthin epoxidase in Dunaliella tertiolecta (DtZEP) at different light and diverse salinity conditions. To confirm the responsiveness to light conditions, the ZEP expression pattern was investigated in photoperiodic (16 h of light and 8 h of dark) and continuous (24 h of light and 0 h of dark) light conditions. mRNA expression levels in photoperiodic conditions fluctuated along with the light/dark cycle, whereas those in continuous light remained unchanged. In varying salinity conditions, the highest mRNA and protein levels were detected in cells cultured in 1.5 M NaCl, and ZEP expression levels in cells shifted from 0.6 M NaCl to 1.5 M NaCl increased gradually. These results show that mRNA expression of DtZEP responds rapidly to the light/dark cycle or increased salinity, whereas changes in protein synthesis do not occur within a short period. Taken together, we show that DtZEP gene expression responds rapidly to light irradiation and hyperosmotic stress. In addition, ZEP expression patterns in light or salinity conditions are similar to those of higher plants, even though the habitat of D. tertiolecta is different.
In order to establish the basic data for the active use of the LED light source in the aquaculture industry, the experiment about the behavior of rockfish (Sebastes inermis) corresponding to the LED light was conducted by image analysis. LED lights for the experiment were one red light (wave length: 622 nm; light power: 811 mW) and two green lights (wave length: 518 nm; light power: 648 mW, wave length: 518 nm; light power: 810 mW). Behavior of the rockfish was analyzed using a moving distance (MD5) for 5 minutes where MD5s during the period of feeding were 20.0 m, 19.6 m, 16.3 m and 20.5 m in the ch1, ch2, ch3 and ch4. At the sunrise, mean MD5 of the entire channel about right before and right after were 6.3 m and 8.2 m. At the sunrise, mean MD5s of the entire channel about right before and right after were 13.6 m and 12.0 m. In the ch1, ch2 and ch3, mean MD5s during the period of 24 hours were 13.2 m, 9.6 m and 6.8 m at experiment 1and 5.2 m, 3.8 m and 2.9 m in the experiment 2.
