  • Recently many studies being carried out to increase the light efficiency of LED. The external quantum efficiency of LED, generally the light efficiency, is determined by the internal quantum efficiency and the light extraction efficiency. The internal quantum efficiency of LED was already reached to more than 90%, but the light extraction efficiency is still insufficient compared with the internal quantum efficiency because the total internal reflection is generated in the interface between the LED chip and air. Thus, we studied about flip chip LED with PSS and performed the optical simulation which find more optimized PSS for flip chip LED to increase the light extraction efficiency. Decreasing of the total internal reflection and effect of diffused reflection according to PSS improved the light extraction efficiency. To get more higher the efficiency, we simulated flip chip with PSS that the parameters are arrangement, edge spacing, radius, height and shape of PSS.

  • Since the organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) have been widely investigated as next-generation displays, it has been successfully commercialized as a flexible and rollable display. However, there is still wide room and demand to improve the device characteristics such as power efficiency and lifetime. To solve this issue, there has been a wide research effort, and among them, the internal and the external light extraction techniques have been attracted in this research field by its fascinating characteristic of material independence. In this study, a micro-nano composite structured external light extraction layer was demonstrated. A reactive ion etching (RIE) process was performed on the surfaces of hexagonally packed hemisphere micro-lens array (MLA) and randomly distributed sphere diffusing films to form micro-nano composite structures. Random nanostructures of different sizes were fabricated by controlling the processing time of the O2 / CHF3 plasma. The fabricated device using a micro-nano composite external light extraction layer showed 1.38X improved external quantum efficiency compared to the reference device. The results prove that the external light extraction efficiency is improved by applying the micro-nano composite structure on conventional MLA fabricated through a simple process.

  • We optimized the design of the flat encapsulant of a light-emitting diode (LED) package to obtain higher light output power (LOP), both by experiment and simulation using three-dimensional ray-tracing software. In the experiment, the refractive index of the encapsulant was varied (1.41 and 1.53). In addition, double-layer structures with these refractive indices (1.41/1.53) were investigated by varying the shape of the interface between the two among flat, concave, and convex. The experiments showed that the LOP of the double-layer encapsulant with convex interface increased by 13.4% compared to the single-layer encapsulant with a refractive index 1.41, which was explained by the increase of the light extraction efficiency (LEE) in connection with the increase of the critical angle (${\theta}_c$) and the decrease of the Fresnel reflection.

  • To use the GaN based light-emitting diodes (LEDs) as solid state lighting sources, the improvement of light extraction and internal quantum efficiency is essential factors for high brightness LEDs. In this study, we suggested the new materials system of a zinc tin oxide (ZTO) layer formed on blue LED epi-structures to improve the light extraction. ZTO is a representative n-type oxide material consisted of ZnO and SnO system. Moreover, ZTO is one of the promising oxide semiconductor material. Even though ZTO has higher chemical stability than IGZO owing to its SnO2 content this has high mobility and high reliability. After formation of ZTO layer on p-GaN layer by using the spin coating method, structural and optical properties are investigated. The x-ray diffraction (XRD) measurement results show the successful formation of ZTO. The photoluminescence (PL) and absorption spectrum shows that it has 3.6-4.1eV band gap. Finally, the light extraction properties of ZTO/LED chip using electroluminescence (EL) measurement were investigated. The experimental and theoretical analyses were simultaneously conducted.

  • For the research field of night infrared surveillance video, the target imaging in the video is easily affected by the light due to the characteristics of the active infrared camera and the classical ViBe algorithm has some problems for moving target extraction because of background misjudgment, noise interference, ghost shadow and so on. Therefore, an improved ViBe algorithm (I-ViBe) for moving target extraction in night infrared surveillance video is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the video frames are sampled and judged by the degree of light influence, and the video frame is divided into three situations: no light change, small light change, and severe light change. Secondly, the ViBe algorithm is extracted the moving target when there is no light change. The segmentation factor of the ViBe algorithm is adaptively changed to reduce the impact of the light on the ViBe algorithm when the light change is small. The moving target is extracted using the region growing algorithm improved by the image entropy in the differential image of the current frame and the background model when the illumination changes drastically. Based on the results of the simulation, the I-ViBe algorithm proposed has better robustness to the influence of illumination. When extracting moving targets at night the I-ViBe algorithm can make target extraction more accurate and provide more effective data for further night behavior recognition and target tracking.

  • Micro-LEDs show lower efficiencies compared to general LEDs having large areas. Simulations were carried out using ray-tracing software to investigate the change in light extraction efficiency and light distribution according to chip-size of blue flip-chip micro-LEDs (FC ${\mu}-LEDs$). After fixing the height of the square FC ${\mu}-LED$ chip at $158{\mu}m$, the length of one side was varied, with dimensions of 2, 5, 10, 30, 50, 100, 300, and $500{\mu}m$. The highest light-extraction efficiency was obtained at $10{\mu}m$, beyond which the efficiency decreased as the chip-size increased. The chip size-dependence of the FC ${\mu}-LEDs$ both without the patterned sapphire substrate, as well as vertical FC ${\mu}-LEDs$, were analyzed.

  • This study was conducted to establish an ideal condition for obtaining maximum extraction efficiencies using an array of soil types and under a wide variety of conditions. Nine characteristic compounds were studied: benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, o-xylene, m-xylene, p-xylene, n-propylbenzene, 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene, and n-butylbenzene which were found in gasoline. Increasing the moisture content resulted in decreased recovery, and recovery of hydrocarbons from wet soils was significantly lower than from dry soils. For the batch extraction process, 4 hours of extraction time was sufficient to give optimum recovery of the contaminants. With methanol as an extraction solvent, maximum recovery time appeared to be reached quicker for BTEX components than with 2-propanol. The 2 to 1 ratio of solvent/soil was chosen as a compromise to provide for the indicated minimum solvent use and high extraction efficiency. The 0.4 mg/g soil contamination was adequate to show quantitative recovery. The percent recovery of BTEX was concentration dependent more than the semivolatile compounds. Methanol and 2-propanol consistently gave higher efficiency than water. Methanol was superior to 2-propanol in removing contaminants from silty clay loam soil. Using the most efficient extraction procedure, the average recovery of the light hydrocarbons from the three soils was 66 percent. Recoveries were also dependent on soil type, solvent type, extraction time, solvent amount, contaminant concentration, and compounds volatility. This study provided a useful screening technique for procedures that can be used to remediate soils contaminated with light hydrocarbons.

  • We report a numerical analysis of the light-extraction efficiency (LEE) of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) on patterned sapphire substrates (PSSs). We considered various n-sided, regular convex pyramids, where n is an integer and $n{\geq}3$. We then considered four cross sections: extruded, subtracted, truncated-extruded, and truncated-subtracted. Ray-tracing simulations were carried out with these polygonal pyramid patterns, and the dimensions of the patterns were systematically varied. Optimized pattern shapes were determined for large LEE. An extruded circular pyramid with a slant angle of $45^{\circ}$ was found to be the optimal patterned shape.

  • Recent years, OLEDs have been progressed intensively and been widely applied to Display and Lighting industry,Almost 100% internal quantum efficiency was achieved by developing new materials and structure optimization. However, external quantum efficiency was still low due to total internal reflection of light inside OLED devices and absorption of light at the surface of metal electrode. In order to improve external quantum efficiency of OLED devices, various kinds of optical functional structures were introduced to inside and outside of OLED devices to increase light extraction efficiency. In this paper, various efforts to apply optical functional structures in OLED devices were reviewed and way to improve light extraction efficency of OLED devices were discussed.
