  • In recent years, xenon plasma arc lamp was introduced for high-intensity curing of composite filling materials in direct resin restorations. In this study, two types of restorative materials, namely composites point $4^{(R)}$ and $Z250^{(R)}$ were selected and curing was conducted using a conventional halogen light and two plama curing lights. Two different resin composites were cured using the different units($Flipo^{(R)}$, Ultra-lite 180A, and $TriLight^{(R)}$) and tested for microhardness. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that exposure to a plasma curing lamp for 3, 6. 9 seconds is equivalent to 20 or 40 seconds of irradiation using a conventional halogen curing unit. 1. $Flipo^{(R)}$ and Ultra-lite 180A were able to polymerize point $4^{(R)}$ at 6 seconds to a degree equal to that of the $TriLight^{(R)}$(control) at 40 seconds. 2. $Flipo^{(R)}$ was able to polymerize $Z250^{(R)}$ at 9 seconds to a degree equal to that of the $TriLight^{(R)}$(control) on the bottom surface at 20 seconds. whereas Ultra-lite 180A could not do. 3. Two plasma curing units were able to cure the test-composites with bottom/top ratios approximately 61% to 96% at 3 to 9 seconds. There were some differences between the two composite brands, with $Z250^{(R)}$ displaying less difference between top and bottom hardness values. For point $4^{(R)}$ and $Z250^{(R)}$, at least 6 or 9 seconds were necessary to produce microhardness equivalent to that of the $TriLight^{(R)}$ curing at 20 or 40 seconds.

  • PURPOSE. To assess the degree of conversion (DC) and light irradiance delivered to light-cured and dual-cured cements by application of different light sources through various types of monolithic computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) materials. MATERIALS AND METHODS. RelyX Ultimate Clicker light-cured and dual-cured resin cement specimens with 1.5-mm thicknesses (n=300, 10/group), were placed under four types of crystalline core structure (Vita Enamic, Vita Suprinity, GC Ceresmart, Degudent Prettau Anterior). The specimens were irradiated for 40 seconds with an LED Soft-Start or pulse-delay unit or 20 seconds with a QTH unit. DC ratios were determined by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) after curing the specimen at 1 day and 1 month. The data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test (for paired comparison) and the Kruskal-Wallis H test (for multiple comparison), with a significance level of P<.05. RESULTS. DC values were the highest for RelyX Ultimate Clicker light-cure specimens polymerized with the LED Soft-Start unit. The combination of the Vita Suprinity disc and RelyX Ultimate Clicker dual-cure resin cement yielded significantly higher values at both timepoints with all light units (all, P<.05). CONCLUSION. Within the limitations of this study, we conclude that the DC of RelyX Ultimate Clicker dual-cure resin cement was improved significantly by the use of Vita Suprinity and the LED Soft-Start light unit. We strongly recommend the combined use of an LED light unit and dual-cure luting cement for monolithic ceramic restorations.

  • The purpose of present study was to determine whether different kinds of curing lights can alter microtensile bond strength(MTBS) of class I cavity pulpal and axial wall specimens in primary molar. Thirty clean mandibular 2nd primary molar's occlusal enamel were removed and class I cavity, size of $2{\times}4{\times}2mm$ was prepared. Dentin bonding agent was applied according to manufacturer's manual. Each group was cured with Halogen Curing Unit, Plasma Curing Unit and LED Curing Unit. Composite resin was bulk filled and photo cured with same curing unit. MTBS specimens which size is $0.7{\times}0.7{\times}4mm$ were prepared with low speed saw. Specimens were coded by their curing lights and wall positions (Halogen - Axial wall group, Halogen - Pulpal wall group, Plasma - Axial wall group, Plasma - Pulpal wall group, LED - Axial wall group, LED - Pulpal walt group). MTBS were tested at 1 mm/min cross Head speed by Universal Testing Machine. Fractured surface and bonding surface was observed with SEM. T-test between axial and pulpal specimens in each curing lights, one-way ANOVA among different curing light specimens in each wall positions were done. Weibull distribution analysis was done. The results were as follows : Mean MTBS of pulpal wall specimens were significantly greater than that of axial wall specimens at each curing units(p<.05). There was no significant difference in the MTBS among three curing units at axial wall and pulpal wall. In Weibull distribution, pulpal wall specimens were more homogeneous than axial wall specimens.

  • Newly developed curing units(plasma arc curing units) operate at relatively high intensity and are claimed to result in optimum properties of composite resin in a short curing time. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the microhardness and microleakage at the resin-tooth interface of two types of composite resins polymerized with visible light and plasma arc curing units. The results from the present study can be summarized as follows 1. Microhardness in each depth was shown to be higher in group AHL than AP3 & AP6. Group ZHL was lower than AP6 at surface(p<0.05) and had no statistically significant difference at 1mm and 2mm(p>0.05). In other depths, group ZHL was higher than ZP3 and ZP6(p<0.05). 2. The incremental reduction in microhardness with depth was shown to be in all group except in surface-1mm of group AHL and $1{\sim}2mm$ of group ZHL(p<0.05). 3. Degree of microleakage in all oops were shown to be higher in gingival margin than occlusal margin but no statistically significant difference(p>0.05). 4. Differences between curing methods in microleakage were shown to be no statistically significant difference(p>0.05). 5. Differences between composite resins in microleakage were shown to be no statistically significant differ once(p>0.05).

  • The objective of this study is to analyze the shear bond strength of orthodontic buttons according to light tip distance and optic fiber diameter when an extended optic fiber was applied to the tip of a curing light unit. In this study, 315 extracted premolar teeth were divided into 3 groups. Orthodontic buttons were attached using no optic fibers (Group I), 3.0 mm diameter optic fibers (Group II), or 5.0 mm diameter optic fibers (Group III). Each group was divided into subgroups A - C (5.0, 10.0, and 15.0 mm light tip distance), respectively. Shear bond strength was then measured while varying the light tip distance. In group I, shear bond strength significantly decreased as the light tip distance increased. When the shear bond strength was evaluated according to the optic fiber diameter, no statistical significance was observed in group of 5.0 mm light tip distance. Compared with group IB, group IIIB showed significantly greater shear bond strength. Compared with group IC, all groups using 3.0 or 5.0 mm diameter optic fibers showed significantly greater shear bond strength. Therefore, when a curing light unit has poor accessibility, optic fibers with a large diameter should be considered.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the polymerization shrinkage of several filling methods using strain gauges. In this study, a light-emitting diode(LED) curing unit(Elipar Freeligh2, 3M EPSE, USA) and plasma arc lamp(PAL) curing unit(Flipo, LOKKI, France) were used for curing, Filtek $Z350^{TM}$(3M EPSE, USA) composite resin was used for the cavity filling. Sixty permanent bicuspid teeth, that were extracted for orthodontic treatment, were studied. The cavities were prepared on the occlusal surface and were filled using the following methods : 1) bulk filling, 2) parallel filling, 3) oblique filling The strain was recorded on the buccal, lingual, mesial and distal surfaces and the strain values were computed into stress values. The shear bond strength of each filling method was tested using a Micro Universal Testing machine. The results can be summarized as follows: 1. In the strain changes, all LED and PAL curing groups showed an increase on the buccal surface and a slow decrease as time elapsed. 2. In the strain changes of the mesial and distal surfaces, the decreases and increases were shown repeatedly and reduced as time elapsed. 3. There were no significant statistical strain changes among filling methods in the LED or PAL curing groups. 4. There were significant statistical strain changes between the LED and PAL curing groups on the buccal surface(p<0.05). 5. From the shear bond strength results, in the LED curing group, filling method 3 showed lower surface stress than filling method 1 and 2(p<0.05). In the PAL curing group, there were no significant statistical strain changes between each filling method. 6. The surface stress of each group was lower than the shear bond strength.

  • As a part of an effort to minimize the polymerization shrinkage which is considered to be a major cause of failed bonds to tooth, newly designed 'Double LED system' was tested in the present study. Analyses were performed on the pattern of micro-leakage and the changes of strain which have occurred during the polymerization process. The results can be summarized as follows: 1. In the strain change, dramatic increase was observed with initiation of polymerization which was followed by subsequent gradual decrease with elapse of time in both the single LED system and double LED system. 2. The single LED system were shown to develop and maintain the maximum stress more than double LED system(p<0.05). 3. Less micro-leakage was found in the double LED system than in the single LED system(p<0.05). From the above-mentioned results, the double LED system can be a very useful tool in a sense of reducing polymerization shrinkage when compared to the single LED system. However, practical problems such as size of curing unit and its application method with its light intensity should be solved before its clinical application.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the polymerization contraction and the microhardness of compostie resin($Supreme^{(R)}$, Filtek $Flow^{(R)}$, 3M-ESPE, USA) according to irradiation modes of LED curing unit(Elipar $Freelight^{(R)}$, 3M-ESPE, USA). The strain guage method was used for determination of polymerization contraction. Sample were divided by 6 groups according to curing modes and filling method. Group A: $Supreme^{(R)}$, Filtek $Flow^{(R)}$ lining, 10seconds curing, Group B: $Supreme^{(R)}$, Filtek $Flow^{(R)}$ lining, 15seconds curing, Group C: $Supreme^{(R)}$, Filtek $Flow^{(R)}$ lining, 15seconds soft start curing, Group D: $Supreme^{(R)}$ only, 10seconds curing, Group E: $Supreme^{(R)}$ only, 15seconds curing, Group F: $Supreme^{(R)}$ only, 15seconds soft start curing. Preparations of acrylic molds were followed by filling and curing. Strain guage attached to each sample were connected to a strainmeter. Measurements were recorded at each second for the total of 10 minutes including the periods of light application. And microhardness of each group after 24hours from light irradiation were measured. Obtained data were analyzed statistically using Repeated measures ANOVA and Tukey test. The results of the present study are as follows: 1. In flowable resin liner group, soft start curing group was not found decrease of polymerization contraction. But, In Supreme only filling group, the lowest polymeriation contraction was found in soft start curing group. 2. 10 seconds curing group showed statistically significant reduction of polymerization contraction compared with 15 seconds curing group(p<0.05). 3. The microhardness values of each group not revealed significant difference(p>0.05). But, lower surface microhardness was not reached 80% of upper surface microhardness.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the microtensile bond strength in Class I cavities associated with different light curing modes of same light energy density. Occlusal enamel was removed to expose a flat dentin surface and twenty box-shaped Class I cavities were prepared in dentin. Single Bond (3M Dental product) was applied and Z 250 was inserted using bulk technique. The composite was light-cured using one of four techniques, pulse delay (PD group), soft-start (SS group), pulse cure (PC group) and standard continuous cure (CC group). The light-curing unit capable of adjusting time and intensity (VIP, Bisco Dental product) was selected and the light energy density for all curing modes was fixed at $16J/cm^2$. After storage for 24 hours, specimens were sectioned into beams with a rectangular cross-sectional area of approximately $1mm^2$ Microtensile bond strength $({\mu}TBS)$ test was per- formed using a univel·sal testing machine (EZ Test, Shimadzu Co.). The results were analyzed using oneway ANOVA and Tukey's test at significance level 0.05. The ${\mu}TBS$ of PD group and SS group was higher than that of PC group and CC group. Within the limitations of this in vitro study, modification of curing modes such as pulse delay and soft start polymerization can improve resin/dentin bond strength in Class I cavities by controlling polymerization velocity of composite resin.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the shear bond strength of light-cured glass ionomer cements to dentin surface according to curing time induced by argon laser. In this study, 160 extracted human molars with sound crown were used. The dentin surface of these teeth were exposed with high speed diamond bur under water spray and polished with 120, 320, 400, 800, 1200 grits sand paper. 160 extracted human molars were randomly assigned into four groups (control, experimental 1, 2 & 3) with 40 teeth each. Control group used a visible light curing unit, XL 1000(3M Co., U.S.A) and experimental groups used argon laser($SPECTRUM^{TM}$). And then each group subdivided into two groups (A, B) according to filling materials. Subdivided A group used Fuji II LC(GC Co., Japan), B group used Vitremer(3M Co., U.S.A). The curing units and curing time of each group were as follows : Control group : visible light, 40 seconds Experimental group 1 Experimental group 2 Experimental group 3 : argon laser, 10 seconds : argon laser, 20 seconds : argon laser, 30 seconds The glass ionomer cements were bonded to dentin surface of each specimen. The specimens were stored in 100% relative humidity at 37"c for 7days. And then, the shear bond strength were measured by universal testing machine(Shimatzu Co. Japan) at crosshead speed of 5mm/min and 100kg in full scale and analyzed statistically. The following results were obtained : 1. Experimental group 2-A showed the highest shear bond strength with $9.87{\pm}1.24$ kgf and control group B showed the lowest shear bond strength with $4.08{\pm}0.78$ kgf(P<0.01). 2. The Fuji II LC showed higher shear bond strength with $9.49{\pm}1.24$ kgf than that of the Vitremer with $4.23{\pm}1.24$ kgf. There was significant difference between Fuji II LC and Vitremer(p<0.01). 3. There was no significant differences among experimental groups according to curing time induced by argon laser. 4. There was no significant differences between control group and experimental groups according to curing units.
