Amphiphilic gold nanoparticles were synthesized by the functionalization of gold nanoparticles with hydrophilic and hydrophobic ligands on their surfaces, which can be applied to many disciplines such as biology, photonics, electronics, and so on. The ratio of hydrophilic and hydrophobic ligands plays an important role in such applications since the ratio is closely related to physiochemical properties of the nanoparticles. In this paper, the effect of temperature during the ligand exchange reaction on the ratio of ligands on the gold nanoparticle surface was investigated. Hydrophilic ligands have higher affinity to the nanoparticle surface with an increase of the temperature. Furthermore, the amphiphilic nanoparticles at a higher temperature were more soluble in an aqueous solution even with a lower hydrophilicity of the nanoparticle surface.
Ion exchange resins have been synthesized from chloromethylated styrene-1,4-divinylbenzene (DVB) with 1%, 2%, 5% and 15%-crosslinkage and macrocyclic ligand of $OenNdien-H_4$ by copolymerization. The adsorption characteristics of uranium (${UO_2}^{2+}$), potassium ($K^+$) and neodymium ($Nd^{3+}$) metallic ions have been investigated. The synthesis of these resins was confirmed by content of chlorine, element analysis, and IR-spectrum. The effects of pH, time, and crosslinkage on adsorption of metallic ions were also studied. The uranium ion showed the fast adsorption on the resins above pH 3. The optimum equilibrium time for the adsorption of metallic ions was about two hours. The adsorption selectivity determined in methanol solution was in increasing order uranium (${UO_2}^{2+}$) > potassium ($K^+$) > neodymium ($Nd^{3+}$) ion. Moreover, the adsorption was increased with the crosslinkage concentration in order of 1%, 2%, 5% and 15%-crosslinkage resin.
This study was designed to prospect the $^{111}In$-labelled paclitaxel as tumor imaging agent. In order to provide a taxol molecule with a functional group which is able to chelate In-111, taxol-DTPA conjugate and 2'-hemisuccinyltaxol were synthesized by esterification of taxol at C-2'on C-13 carbon with DTPA anhydride and succinic anhydride, respectively. Synthesis yield of the taxol derivatives was 34% for taxol-DTPA and 80% for 2'-hemisuccinyltaxol. Cytotoxicity of the taxol derivatives were measured by MTT method toward cell lines HT29, B16, P388, and CT26. The cytotoxic activities of the taxol derivatives were maintained, although less active than taxol. Radiolabelling of the taxol derivatives were proceeded directly with $^{111}InCl_3$ or indirectly with $^{111}In$-citrate(ligand-exchange method). The ligand-exchange method was not suitable because some precipitates appeared during the reaction. On the contrary, by direct radiolabelling method, we were able to obtain taxol-DTPA-$^{111}In$ in 100% radiochemical yield. However, 2'-hemisuccinyltaxol was not labelled by both methods. Yield and radiochemical purity of the radiolabelled com-pound were determined by HPLC, paper chromatography and instant thin layer chromatography. Taxol-DTPA-$^{111}In$ was characterized to be hydrophilic by lipophilicity test, and nearly non-adhesive to HT29, B16, P388, and CT26 by cell binding affinity test. Binding affinity of the taxol-DTPA-$^{111}In$ complex to serum proteins was also examined by protein precipitation with 30% trichloroacetic acid. The results showed that 30% of the taxol-DTPA-$^{111}In$ complex binds with serum proteins.

Hydride complexes Cp*Ru(CO)(PR3)H (Cp*=η5-C5Me5, PR3=PMe3, PEt3, PMePh2, PPh3, PCy3)(4a-4f) were synthesized by the reaction of the corresponding chloro complex Cp*Ru(CO)(PR3)Cl (3a-3f) with various hydridic reagent (NaBH4, LiAlH4, LiBEt3H) or NaOMe. Irradiation of Cp*Ru(CO)(PCy3)H (5e) in C6D6 solution with UV light caused H/D exchange reaction between coordinated Cp*, PCy3 and/or Ru-H ligand proton and a deuterium of the deuterated aromatic solvent through a series of inter- and intramolecular C-H activation. The proposed mechanism was described.

The soy bean oil cakes and perillar oil cakes are phosphorylated and sulfonated to be used as ion exchangers. There 40-60mesh cations exchanges have bean tested on the capacity of ion exchange, the adsorption and distribution coefficients of several metal ions in various concentrations of binary solution mixture, hydrochloric acid and alcohol. From there experiments, the following results are concluded. The ion exchange capacity of ion exchangers are higher than 4 meq/g. The adsorption of metal ions on ion exchangers are increased generally as pH is increased, especially Co(II) on sulfonated soy bean oil cake. The distribution coefficients of various metal ions are decreased as the number of branches of carbon and hydroxyl groups are increased. There show that the stereo-isomerism of alkyl group or attraction of ligand have influenced upon various metal ions. Consequently it is deduced that there ion exchanges from soy bean oil cake and perillar oil cake resemble in properties to current ion exchangers.
To study phosphate adsorption on kaolinite, $^{31}$ P MAS NMR(magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy)has been used for kaolinite reacted in 0.1 M phosphate solutions at pH’s from 3 to 11. There are at least 3 different forms of phosphate on kaolinite. One is the phosphate physically adsorbed on kaolinite surface (outer-sphere complexes) or species left after vacuum-filtering. The second is the phosphate adsorbed by ligand exchange (inner-sphere complexes), and the third is Al-phosphate precipitates which are pH dependent. Most of the inner-spherer complexes and surface precipitates are mainly on hydroxided Al(aluminol) rather than hydroxided Si(silanol). These are pertinent with the results obtained from the phosphate adsorption experiments on silica gel and ${\gamma}$-Al$_2$O$_3$ as model compounds, respectively. The two peaks with more negative chemical shifts(more shielded) than the ortho-phosphate peak (positive chemical shift) are assigned to be the inner-sphere complexes and surface precipitates. The $^{31}$ P chemical shifts of the Al-phosphate precipitates are more negative than those of inner-sphere complexes at a given pH due to the larger number of P-O-Al linkages per tetrahedron. The chemical shifts of both the inner-sphere complexes and surface precipitates are more negative than those of inner-sphere complexes at a given pH due to the larger number of P-O-Al linkages per tetrahedron. The chemical shifts of both the inner-sphere complexes and surface precipitates become progressively less shielded with increasing pH. For the inner-sphere complexes, decreasing phosphate protonation combined with peak averaging by rapid proton exchange among phosphate tetrahedra with different numbers of protons is though to be the reason for the peak change. The decreasing shielding with increasing pH for surface precipitates is probably due to the decreasing average number of P-O-Al linkages per tetrahedron combined with decreasing protonation like inner-sphere complexes.

Strontium can not be determined by conventional dc polarography method since it is very difficult to be reduced at the drop mercury electrode(DME) in aqueous solution. However the analytical sensitivity was improved by adsorptive stripping voltammetry in which electro-reduction of ligand in a complex formed between strontium and o-cresolphthaleoxone was performed. Strontium could be determined in range of $5{\sim}30{\mu}g/L$ concentration. This method was affected by coexistent alkali earth metal ions. Consequently ion exchange separation is recommended to analyze strontium in samples.

Organic forms of arsenic (As) were determined through fractionation procedure of soil organic matter (SOM) in soil, sediments and mine tailing samples from the Myungbong, Dongil, and Okdong mining areas of southern Korea. An alkaline extraction method was applied to soil samples followed by the fractionation procedures of SOM by the DAX-8 and XAD-4 resin adsorption method. Major fraction of organic As species (42% to 98%) was found in acid-soluble fraction, whereas minor fraction (0.1 % to 67.8%) was present in the humic-associated As. In acid-soluble fractions, the transphillic- and hydrophilic-associated As were dominant in addition to As binding with humic and fulvic SOM. Arsenic binding was the strongest between pH 6 to 8 and reduced to about 70% at both low and high pH regions. The amount of both transphillic and hydrophillic associated As was less changed than humic and fulvic-associated As, in both low and high pH regions. This apparently indicates that As has stronger affinity towards hydrophillic rather than hydrophobic organics. From the experimental observation of As-binding SOM in natural soil, the ligand exchange model may be a feasible explanation of transphillic and hydrophillic affinity of As.
Toll-like receptors (TLR) are important components of innate immunity in the defense against pathogens. TLRs recognize pathogen-associated common molecular patterns. TLRs are similar to the receptors involved in defense responses in plants. TLR protein is a type 1 membrane protein, consisting of an extracellular domain containing leucine-rich repeats and a cytoplasmic domain. The cytoplasmic domain delivers ligand recognition signals that result in production of anti-microbial agents. The cytoplasmic domain (amino acid 858-1032) of toll-like receptor 9 has been expressed using methylotrophic yeast Pichia pastoris. The protein expression was confirmed by Western-blot, N-terminal sequencing and MALDl-TOF mass spectrometry. The proteins have been purified by nickel affinity, cation exchange and gel-filtration chromatography.
