  • The purposes of this study were to analyze the duplicated contents of 'family life' unit of home economics and other subject textbooks for the middle school students. It focused on the 'family life' area in the home economics textbook compiled following the 2009 revised curriculum, and textbooks of other subjects compiled in the same period. To achieve the purpose of this study, "Home economics I II", "Ethics I II", "Social studies I II", "Science I II III", and "Physical education"were analyzed. The results were as follows. The contents in 'family life' area of "Home economics I II" were overlapped most in the textbook on Ethics, and then Science, Physical education, and social studies in order. In Ethics textbook the contents in family life area and those throughout the whole chapters of home economics textbook are overlapped most. The contents of home economics textbook are overlapped at the content of 'Juvenile's sexual development' of 'Human development process' in science and physical education, and at the content of 'Juvenile's emotional and social development' of 'Understanding of human development' in social studies. Seen from this study the 'family life' area of home economics is overlapped in science, physical education, and social studies, but, home economics has comprehensive contents with the goal of managing healthy individual and family life compared with other subjects, and it induces students' moral practices in their real life on the basis of scientific knowledge different from morality, social studies, and physical education. Hence, the instruction of 'family life' area might be done more effectively by focusing on home economics and integrating the connections of duplicated contents in Ethics, Science, Physical education, and Social studies.

  • The types of inquiry activities included in Life Science II textbooks under the 2015 revised science curriculum were extracted and compared with those of six major and five different publishing companies. The fact that the number of investigation discussions and presentations (IP) increased and the expressions (EX) were included in each unit was interpreted as sufficient to transform the classroom instruction in the 2015 revised science curriculum into student-centered activities. The type of inquiry activities in student-centered activities such as experiment observation, simulation activities, investigation discussions, and presentations accounted for about 41% more than the 27% of 2009 revised science curriculum. However, since data interpretation type is still the largest, it is necessary to reduce the types of data interpretation and to increase the number of types of simulation activities and expressions in order to expand students' creativity and thinking ability when textbook development is needed in the future. In addition to the development of biotechnology, teachers need to reconstruct diverse science materials for each textbook and then use them for students to induce balanced thinking, and try to expand expressive power, creativity, logic, and critical thinking skills.

  • Many middle school students have difficulty in understanding biological concepts because too many concepts are presented in the textbook compared to limited school hours. So, it is necessary to select concepts which are indispensable. The purpose of this study is to select key concepts in the unit 'The Continuity of Life' by surveying students' and teachers' cognition on the concepts. In this study, 78 concepts were extracted from 'Science 3', unit II 'The Continuity of Life'. To survey how students and teachers think the concepts, Likert type questionnaires were made. 300 third grade middle school students and 34 biology teachers were selected by random sampling and the questionnaires were applied. The following results were obtained:1. Students thought 59 concepts out of 78 were important and the mean score of important level of the concepts was 3.60. Students thought 26 concepts out of 78 were difficult and the mean score of diffculty level'of the concepts was 3.26. The more they think the concepts important, the more they think them difficult (r=0.7462, p<0.001). 2. Teachers thought 55 concepts out of 78 were important and the mean score of important level of the concepts was 3.82. Teachers thought 33 concepts out of 78 were difficult and the mean score of diffculty level of the concepts was 3.31. The more they think the concepts important, the more they think them difficult (r=0.6138, p<0.001). 3. The selected concepts were considered more important by teachers than by students(t=2.0150, p<0.05). However, there was no significant difference in evaluating the difficulty level of the concepts(t=0.7327, p>0.05). 4. It was found that students have difficulty in understanding concepts when they are presented in the textbook to require formal preparation than concrete preperation(t=2.6612, p<0.05).

  • The declination is an important concept because it is the underlying concept to understand the plate tectonics and also is used to decide one's location by using the compass and the map in real life. So this study surveys the description of declination being used in six of the seventh curriculum earth science II textbooks followed by the investigation of the possible of misconceptions that the highschool students might have. Utilizing an inventory of key concept, this study examines the actual misconceptions of highschool students, and investigates the relationship between misconceptions and textbooks. As a result, highschool students possess some misconceptions particularly with respect to the magnetic north pole which is caused by a lack of explanation about declination and by a wrong illustration. Therefore we suggest that detailed explanations of declination with non-dipole effect and precise illustrations be provided in the textbook for students th have a better understanding about declination.

  • In this study, we tried to find out how heat and thermal energy terms are defined and used in Korean science textbooks, and to see if there are any differences in the meaning of these terms used in different areas of science. For this purpose, the contents of 52 science textbooks of elementary, middle and high school published by the 2009 revised curriculum were analyzed. The definition of the term heat is given in the middle school Science(1) and the high school Physics I and II textbooks. Most textbooks define heat as "energy transferred due to a temperature difference (Type I)". Only one textbook of Physics I defines heat as "transfer of energy due to a temperature difference (Type II)". The definition of thermal energy is mostly presented in the middle school Science (2) and the high school Physics I textbooks. Physics I textbooks define the thermal energy as "molecular kinetic energy (Type III)", while Science(2) textbooks define it as Type I or "energy causes temperature change or phase transition of matter (Type IV)". In the texts of textbooks, heat is mainly used as the meaning of Type I or Type III. Thermal energy is mainly used as Type III, but it is also used as Type I in the high school Physics and Chemistry textbooks. The meanings of heat and thermal energy terms used are differed by the area of science. They are mainly used as type I or type III in Physics and Chemistry textbooks, and used as type III in Life Science and Earth Science textbooks.

  • The proliferation of bioinformatics in modern biology marks a modern revolution in science that promises to influence science education at all levels. This study analyzed the contents of standards in the 7th and 2007 and 2009 revised high school biology curricula and compared the contents, amount and the presentation styles of bioinformatics with those of biotechnology in biology textbooks. In result, first of all, there are some vague expressions about biotechnology and bioinformatics in the 7th and 2007 revised curriculum. There is a clear expression about biotechnology in 'life science I' and 'advanced biology' of 2009 revised curriculum. Second, more biotechnology is introduced than bioinformatics in 'science', 'biology I', 'biology II', 'life science I' textbooks. Third, in 'biology for high class' textbook, amount of biotechnology contents in the 2007 revised curriculum didn't increase. An more effort to introduce bioinformatics to science high school student is needed according to revising curricula.

In order to achieve the purpose, the textbooks of "Home Economics I II", "Science I II III", "Ethics I II", "Physical education", and "Health education" were analyzed. The results of the analyses were as follows. According to the analyses of the common contents with other subjects related to the 'Food and Nutrition unit' in the "Home Economics I II" textbooks for the middle school students under the 2009 revised curriculum, the high percentages of the common contents were found in "Science" curriculum and "Health education" curriculum, followed by "Physical education" and "Ethics". It was observed that the Home Economics curriculum provided not only the theoretical basis about the dietary issues that the youth faces but also a plan to address those issues, as "Home Economics" textbooks were focused on 'dietary problems of the youth', 'balanced diet', 'green diet', and 'Korean-style diet'. The "Science" curriculum focused on scientific theories and principles, as the "Physical Education"and the "Health education" focused on health. In contrast, it was revealed that the "Ethics" curriculum considered 'Koreans' identity' and 'environment'. Overall as for the strength of 'Food and Nutrition unit' of "Home Economics"compared to those of other subjects, comprehensive contents for dietary life had been dealt with according to the development of the adolescent in "Home Economics", while other subjects focused on specific contents or examples concerned with 'Food and Nutrition unit'. In this regard, the dietary education for the middle school students will be more effectively conducted by "Home Economics", as compared with other subjects.

  • In this study, the STEAM elements and convergence types which appeared in the creative and convergent activities in authorized elementary school science textbooks for 5th and 6th graders were analyzed. For this study, creative and convergence activities presented in 9 different science textbooks for 5th and 6th graders were selected and the STEAM elements and convergence types were analyzed by each publisher, grade-semester, and science field. The results of this study are as follows. First, there was a large variation by publisher in the total frequency of STEAM elements and the frequency of each element in creative and convergence activities. Second, the ratio of convergence type consisting of two elements was very high, and the higher the number of fused elements, the lower the ratio appeared in overall. Third, the art (A) element had the highest frequency in all grade-semesters, and the technology (T), engineering (E), mathematics (M) elements differed in the distribution of frequency by grade-semesters. Fourth, the engineering (E) element in the 'integration' field, and the art (A) element in the fields of 'movement and energy', 'material', 'earth and universe', and 'life' had the highest frequency.
