  • The purpose of this study is to identify elementary school teachers' needs for access points when searching for picture books to be used as teaching media, and suggest ways to improve DLS(Digital Library System) in school libraries. To achieve this purpose, the study examined the access points provided by OPAC(Online Public Access Catalog) systems in seven domestic and foreign libraries. In addition, it conducted an online survey with elementary school teachers, and a total of 220 responses were finally analyzed. It was found that the most needed access points were topic, grade/age, content, subject/chapter, and cross-curricula learning topics, etc. Based on the results, this study suggests providing the most needed access points in DLS, developing controlled vocabulary tools, and improving system functions or the interface to enhance accessibility to picture books.

  • This research analyzed how the main requisites of faceted navigation as names of facets, subterms of facets, order of facets, too many results were user-centric. On the research method, this research analyzed the results of the three keywords retrieved in the 15 university libraries' catalogs and how was user's familiarity to the terms. Although domestic universities have serviced facet navigation, the names of the facet of publication date and series title in format and the terms under the facets as multimedia and nonbook material, media material are too difficult intuitively to understand and there were lots of formal terms used in cataloging rules and the terms librarians have usually used. Because of the terms, there is high possibility to deteriorate users' satisfaction and usability to library catalog in future. Even though they serviced facet navigation, there was also weakness as too many results and the university libraries need to use relevance ranking method to solve the weakness. This research has found the possibility of being used too many of levels of the facets and this may also badly affect the users' experience to library catalog.

  • This study analyzed Korean university libraries' holdings of Western language books published in 2003 and 2013 using the KERIS union catalog with a view to investigating the changes in collection development of Western language books in the libraries. To do that, new collection indexes - holding h-index, CUI (Collection Uniqueness Index), and CCHR (Common Collection Holding Ratio) - were suggested, and they were used with basic indexes such as the number of titles, the number of books, and the number of books per title. The analysis reveals that compared to those published in 2003, the number of titles was decreased by 16.1% with those published in 2013, and the number of books dropped more sharply, by 42.2%. Also, in 2013, CCHR was decreased while CUI was increased. In terms of subject, among DDC main classes, 0XX (Generalities) showed the greatest decrease rate in both the number of titles and books because of the radical reduction of computer-related books. In terms of each library's holdings, the number of Western language books held by top libraries has been increased with those published in 2013.

  • This paper reports the results of the analysis on the access points of two bibliographic databases specialized in children's materials: "A" public library's online catalog and "N" children's novel database. The analysis particularly focused on the access points that lead users to discover their own needs and on the ways users search and navigate. The findings showed that the selected bibliographic systems supported many access points that were taken from the materials as well as from other relevant information sources and that browsing and navigating with hyperlinks supported the users' 'recognition' of information through 'interactivity' between the users and the systems, 'information encountering,' and 'serendipity.' The findings of this paper have implications for librarians and systems designers who want to develop user-friendly bibliographic systems that give access to children's materials.

Using survey method, this study collected data regarding the Perception of 78 librarians with regard to interlibrary loan, document delivery, union catalog construction, shared acquisition, and community building. Overall, the respondents evaluated well-established forms of resource sharing(interlibrary loan, document delivery, and union catalog construction) more positively than less-well developed ones(shared acquisition and community building). Correlation analysis between perception of library/individual characteristics was conducted. Barriers to each of the five areas of resource sharing are also identified in the study.

  • The KERIS Union Catalog is the largest bibliographic database in Korea. It has over 5.7 million bibliographic records and at present 330 university libraries are participating in shared cataloging services. The database, however, includes various errors and a large number of duplicate data because separate databases from many university libraries were merged without proper quality control in a short period. This study intends to find error data types by analyzing dissertation bibliographic data. The results show that error data are mainly caused by input errors, and the mistakes in using MARC formats and cataloging rules.
