  • 1. Introduction Korean society is moving toward an information society in 2000. At present a few Korean libraries are computerized and networks between libraries have yet to be formed. And there is no study done on the computerization of the Korean libraries. Therefore, this study will attempt to find elements that influence the computerization of Korean libraries. This research is composed of the following three parts. 1) Survey on the present status of computerized Korean libraries. 2) The influencing factors for Korean library computerization on the level of organization. 3) The relationship between professionalism and the access to the computer information on the level of librarians. 2. Hypothesis The basic hypothesis of this research is from the theory of the innovation of organization by Moch. He found that the size of the organization, specialization of the staffs, the task differentiation, and decentralization of decision making were the underlying influence for the organizational innovation. From this theory, hypothesis were formulated as follows. 1) The size of the library influences the library computerization. 2) Specialization of the librarians influences the library computerization. 3) Differentiation of the library services influences the library computerization. 4) The decision making process influences the library computerization. 3. Collection of the data Questionnaires were sent to 21 computerized libraries among which were 8 experimental group and 7 other controlled group libraries. Data were collected from April to July 1988. 4. Findings 1) The present status of Korean library computerization. -Korean libraries are computerized mostly in cataloguing. -The computer technology gate-keepers are mainly librarians. -The computerization budgets are not specifically allocated or funded by the organization but librarians made decisions to allocate library budget for the computer application. Gradually, more libraries are being funded specially for library computerization. 2) Factors that influence library computerization. -The size of the western books and the number of western periodical subscription influence the library computerization. -The number of annual book increase influences library computerization. -The number of annual book use influences library computerization. -The number of annual library users does not influences library computerization. - The size of the library budget influences the library computerization. -Librarian's specialization influences the library computerization. -Differentiation of library service influences the library computerization. Information service is positively related to the library computerization while data service is not related to the library computerization. -Decentralization of decision making in library service influences the library computerization.

For the purpose, this research performed pervious literature reach and then a questionnaire survey for the librarians to determine their service periods and opinions, requirements and suggestions about continuing education as above and the current status of the education. The result of the study can be described as below. First, few incumbent librarians generally participate in continuing education. The participation, if any, is different in degree according to types of the librarian's library and task. Second, continuing education provided by responsible agencies is seen negative in value, but relatively positive in validity. it is agreed that the education is not easy to be provided due to a lack of time. Third, individual incumbent librarians are little devoted to continuing education, although the devotion is somewhat different according to the type of library. Fourth, an absolute majority of the librarians want the establishment of an authorities exclusively assuming continuing education service and the provision of informal continuing education related to computer during their working hours or vacation period. Fifth, the librarians under survey suggests that it is necessary for the development of continuing education to establish an exclusively responsible authorities as mentioned before and a system for evaluating each of agencies providing continuing education service, implement relevant, specific programs, introduce incentives for those librarians who receive the education and thereon make studies, help and promote librarians to be trained abroad, apply new ways of continuous education and extend the range of such educational process.

  • As public interests and demands on the library space and library goods increase, the role of librarians dealing with this issue has become more important. This research develops lists of core and non-core goods in space managements of public libraries, children's libraries, and school libraries. The lists will make the librarian's tasks effective and maximize user satisfaction. For public libraries, the space is divided into nine main areas, and a total of 80-90 goods(50-60 core and 20-30 non-core goods) are identified. The space of children's libraries is divided into four main areas(space for reading, books, entry, and special activities) with a list of 60-70 library goods(30 core and 30-40 non-core goods). School libraries consist of seven distinctive spaces, including spaces for books, multi-media, reading, and teaching, and it requires 90 goods in total(30-40 core and 50-60 non-core goods). The findings of this study can be utilized in listing up library goods. Further research should be conducted to develop such tools as guidelines, standards and manuals for space management.

The contents of this study was to present it. It had examined the current situation, strengths, weaknesses and corresponding to replace the big deal contract. After reviewing the literature, we looked into the alternative activities for the big deal such as open access-based, usage-based, consortium improvement-based, publishers lead, and other models. As a result, the 'consortium cost reapportion model' was an alternative for the KESLI. The alternative was in the short term for cost division format, but long-term oriented for a consortium single(bloc) payment type or national licence model. The model was based on the data from the last year. It had evaluated download the PDF and HTML documents, but the three times weighting more than others, and the rest of 14 factors of 0.5 to 5 out of 100 total score. The total amount negotiated by national units 10, 20 and 30 grades for the final step was allocated to the participating library on the KESLI consortium.

  • Libraries have recently sought to diversify their roles to meet the changing needs of local residents, while faithfully playing the library's original roles. The creation of a complex cultural space and the provision of services based on it are one of the ways to expand its role. In this study, a surveyed and analyzed the awareness of the complex cultural space of the library and the preference and awareness of the program operated in the complex cultural space by conducting a survey on the users of the library currently operating the complex cultural space. As a result, first, it was found that they preferred information space, education space, and rest space in space preference. On the other hand, community space and experience space showed low preference. Second, they prefer educational programs, exhibition programs, and performance programs that utilize complex cultural spaces, but experience programs and community programs have low preference. Therefore, it is necessary to operate the program by providing exhibitions and performance spaces while providing information and education spaces to users. The librarian should also promote the fact that library can be only the space of information and education, but also the space where culture, healing, experience and communication take place. In addition, libraries should strive to improve user awareness of library space.

  • The purpose of this study is to present the theoretical basis and quantified objective standards for the establishment of collection management policy. The study results are summarized as follows. Most of the study books were in the form of periodicals as a steady seller. Most of the steady sellers were textbooks which published periodically. As a modern novel, a steady seller was able to confirm the phenomenon of dependence on a specific author. Bestsellers were investigated to be influenced by publishers and authors. Books of publishers that publish comics and children's textbooks had a significant correlation with the selection of bestsellers. The average number of recommended books borrowed per recommended book was 14,871. The average number of loans per book selected as a bestseller was 53,531. Based on the loan data, about 80-82% of all top-tier loans were covered by 90%, and about 27-29% of all top-ranked loans were covered by 50%. This shows that the Pareto Principle can be firmly applied to public library lending patterns. Loans in the field of literature accounted for 50.6% of the total loans. Among literature, Korean literature accounted for 51.3% of the total. The natural sciences were generating more loans with a relatively small pool of literature compared to other subject fields.
