This paper presents a novel region-based snake method for vessel segmentation. According to geometric shape analysis of the vessel structure with different scale, an efficient statistical estimation of vessel branches is introduced into the energy objective function, which applies not only the vessel intensity information, but also geometric information of line-like structure in the image. The defined energy function is minimized using the gradient descent method and a new region-based speed function is obtained, which is more accurate to the vessel structure and not sensitive to the initial condition. The narrow band algorithm in the level set framework implements the proposed method, the solution of which is steady. The segmentation experiments are shown on several images. Compared with other geometric active contour models, the proposed method is more efficient and robust.

For image segmentation with intensity inhomogeneity, many region-based level set methods have been proposed. Some of them however can't get the relatively ideal segmentation results under the severe intensity inhomogeneity and weak edges, and without use of the image gradient information. To improve that, we propose a new level set method combined with local direction gradient in this paper. Firstly, based on two assumptions on intensity inhomogeneity to images, the relationships between segmentation objects and image gradients to local minimum and maximum around a pixel are presented, from which a new pixel classification method based on weight of Euclidian distance is introduced. Secondly, to implement the model, variational level set method combined with image spatial neighborhood information is used, which enhances the anti-noise capacity of the proposed gradient information based model. Thirdly, a new diffusion process with an edge indicator function is incorporated into the level set function to classify the pixels in homogeneous regions of the same segmentation object, and also to make the proposed method more insensitive to initial contours and stable numerical implementation. To verify our proposed method, different testing images including synthetic images, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and real-world images are introduced. The image segmentation results demonstrate that our method can deal with the relatively severe intensity inhomogeneity and obtain the comparatively ideal segmentation results efficiently.

In this paper, a level set based energy functional is proposed, the minimization of which results in simultaneous reference background image modeling and foreground segmentation. Due to the mutual constraint of the two processes, a good estimate of the background can be obtained with a small number of frames, and due to the use of the level set, an Euler-Lagrange equation that directly solves the problem can be derived.
To obtain weight reduction and high performance, level set based topology optimization in magnetic fields is promising for the design of magnetic devices where the precise boundary shape and topological chanages are required. Level set function is introduced to represent ferromagnetic material boundaries and material properties of the magnetic reluctivity are determined. The optimization problem is formulated for maximizing the actuating force in a prescribed direction under limited usage of ferromagnetic material.
In this study, the two-phase incompressible flow in two-dimensional channel considering the effect of surface tension is simulated using an improved level-set method. Quadratic element is used for solving the continuity and Navier-Stokes equations to avoid using an additional pressure equation, and Crank-Nicholson scheme and linear element are used for solving the advection equation of the level set function. Direct approach method using geometric information is implemented instead of the hyperbolic-type partial differential equation for the reinitializing the level set function. The benchmark test case considers various arrays of defomable droplets under different flow conditions in straight channel. The deformation and migration of the droplets are computed and the results are compared very well with the existing studies.
A new level set based topology optimization employing inner-front creation algorithm is presented. In the conventional level set based topology optimization, the optimum topology strongly depends on the initial level set distribution due to the incapability of inner-front creation during optimization process. In the present work, an inner-front creation algorithm is proposed, in which the sizes, positions, and number of new inner-fronts during the optimization process can be globally and consistently identified. To update the level set function during the optimization process, the least-squares finite element method is employed. As demonstrative examples for the flexibility and usefulness of the proposed method, the level set based topology optimization considering lightweight design of 3D shell structure is carried out.
A level set method is proposed to simulate the incompressible two-phase flow considering the effect of surface tension. For reinitialization of level set junction, a direct approach method is employed, instead of solving hyperbolic type equation. A mixed element is adopted, so that the continuity mid Navier-Stokes equations are solved by using the quadratic elements (six-node triangular element mid nine-node quadrilateral element), mid the level set function is solved by using the linear elements (three-node triangular element mid four-node quadrilateral element). In order to verify the accuracy mid robustness of the codes, the present methods are applied to a few benchmark problems. It is confirmed that the present results are in good qualitative mid quantitative agreements with the existing studies.
Using a level set method we develop a shape optimization method applied to energy flow problems in steady state. The boundaries are implicitly represented by the level set function obtainable from the 'Hamilton-Jacobi type' equation with the 'Up-wind scheme.' The developed method defines a Lagrangian function for the constrained optimization. It minimizes a generalized compliance, satisfying the constraint of allowable volume through the variations of implicit boundary. During the optimization, the boundary velocity to integrate the Hamilton-Jacobi equation is obtained from the optimality condition for the Lagrangian function. Compared with the established topology optimization method, the developed one has no numerical instability such as checkerboard problems and easy representation of topological shape variations.
This paper describes a new structure re create a pseudo Gaussian function network (PGFN). The activation function of hidden layer does not necessarily have to be symmetric with respect to center. To give the flexibility of the network, the deviation of pseudo Gaussian function is changed according to a direction of given input. This property helps that given function can be described effectively with a minimum number of center by PGFN, The distribution of deviation is represented by level set method and also the loaming of deviation is adjusted based on it. To demonstrate the performance of the proposed network, general problem of function estimation is treated here. The representation problem of continuous functions defined over two-dimensional input space is solved.
In the present work, topology optimization method using adaptive inner-front level set method is presented. In the conventional level set based topology optimization method, there exists an incapability for inner-front creation during optimization process. In this regard, as a new attempt to avoid and to overcome the limitation, an inner-front creation algorithm is proposed. In the inner-front creation algorithm, the strain energy density of a structure along with volume constraint is considered. Especially, to facilitate the inner-front creation process during the optimization process, the inner-front creation map which corresponds to the discrete valued function of strain energy density is constructed. In the evolution of the level set function during the optimization process, the least-squares finite element method (LSFEM) is employed. As an application to shell structures, the lightweight design of doubly curved shell and segmented mirror is carried out.
