One of the education purpose of the section "Figures" in the eighth grade is to develop students' deductive reasoning ability, which is basic and essential for living in a democratic society. However, most or middle school students feel much more difficulty or even frustration in the study of formal arguments for geometric situations than any other mathematical fields. It is owing to the big gap between inductive reasoning in elementary school education and deductive reasoning, which is not intuitive, in middle school education. Also, it is very burden for students to describe geometric statements exactly by using various appropriate symbols. Moreover, Usage of the same symbols for angle and angle measurement or segments and segments measurement makes students more confused. Since geometric relations is mainly determined by the measurements of geometric objects, students should be able to interpret the geometric properties to the algebraic properties, and vice verse. In this paper, we first compare and contrast inductive and deductive reasoning approaches to justify geometric facts and relations in school curricula. Convincing arguments are based on experiment and experience, then are developed from inductive reasoning to deductive proofs. We introduce teaching methods to help students's understanding for deductive reasoning in the textbook by using stepwise visualization materials. It is desirable that an effective proof instruction should be able to provide teaching methods and visual materials suitable for students' intellectual level and their own intuition.

The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of teaching on functional thinking, one of the algebraic thinking in sixth grade students level. For this study, we developed functional thinking based-teaching through analyzing mathematical curriculum and preceding research, which consisted of 12 classes, and we investigated the effects of teaching through quantitative and qualitative analysis. In the results of this study, functional thinking based-teaching was statistically proven to be more effective in improving algebraic reasoning skills and lower elements which is an algebraic reasoning as generalized arithmetic and functional thinking, compared to traditional textbook-centered lessons. In addition, the functional thinking based-teaching gave a positive impact on the functional thinking level. Thus functional thinking based-teaching provides guidance on the implications for teaching and learning methods and study of the functional thinking in the future, because of the significant impact on the mathematics learning in six grade students.
The study aimed at investigating preservice elementary school teachers' statistical reasoning when they posed survey questions as they engaged in statistical problem solving, and analyzing how their statistical reasoning affect the subsequent stages. 24 groups of sophomore students(80 students) from two education universities conducted statistical problem solving and completed statistical report, and 22 of them were analyzed. As a result, 9 statistical reasoning were shown when preservice teachers posed survey questions. Among them, question clarification oriented reasoning and variability based reasoning were not exclusively focused upon in the previous research. In order to investigate how statistical reasoning in posing survey questions affected subsequent stages, we examined difficulties and issues that preservice teachers had when they engaged in analyses and conclusion stage described in their report. Consequently, preservice teachers' difficulties were related to population relevant reasoning, category level reasoning, standardization reasoning, alignment to question reasoning, and question clarification oriented reasoning. While previous studies did not focus on question posing stage, this study claimed the necessity of emphasizing various statistical reasoning in question posing and importance of teaching and learning method of appropriate statistical reasoning in question posing.

The main purpose of this study is to investigate whether the correlational reasoning activities could improve middle school students' correlational reasoning abilities. The subjects were 8th grade students, and the correlational reasoning activities of the CASE(cognitive acceleration through science education) program was intervened to the experimental group(n=111) during science class while usual science instruction was given to the control group(n=55). The correlational reasoning test was administered before and after the intervention. The pre-test results showed that most of subjects performed poorly in correlation problems and no significant differences were found between the two groups. In the post-test, the experimental group showed enhanced performance while the control group did not. Therefore it can be concluded that CASE program activities help the students to improve correlational reasoning ability. However, the proportions of students gave correct response were not so high: 27% for the multiple-choice item and about 6% for the essay-type items.
This study is based on the recognition that teacher educators have to focus their attention on developing pre-service teachers' statistical reasoning for statistics education of school mathematics. This paper investigated knowledge on pre-service teachers' statistical reasoning. Statistical Reasoning Assessment (SRA) is performed to find out pre-service teachers' statistical reasoning ability. The research findings are as follows. There was meaningful difference in the statistical area of statistical reasoning ability with significant level of 0.05. This proved that 4 grades pre-service teachers were more improve on statistical reasoning than 2 grades pre-service teachers. Even though most of the pre-service teachers ratiocinated properly on SRA, half of pre-service teachers appreciated that small size of sample is more likely to deviate from the population than the large size of sample. A few pre-service teachers have difficulties in understanding "Correctly interprets probabilities(be able to explain probability by using ratio" and "Understands the importance of large samples(A small sample is more likely to deviate from the population)".
In this paper, we propose Context-based Music Recommendation (COMUS) ontology for modeling user's musical preferences and context and for supporting reasoning about the user's desired emotion and preferences. The COMUS provides an upper Music Ontology that captures concepts about the general properties of music such as title, artists and genre and also provides extensibility for adding domain-specific ontologies, such as Mood and Situation, in a hierarchical manner. The COMUS is music dedicated ontology in OWL constructed by incorporating domain specific classes for music recommendation into the Music Ontology. Using this context ontology, we believe that the use of logical reasoning by checking the consistency of context information, and reasoning over the high-level, implicit context from the low-level, explicit information. As a novelty, our ontology can express detailed and complicated relations among the music, moods and situations, enabling users to find appropriate music for the application. We present some of the experiments we performed as a case-study for music recommendation.
The purpose of this study is to confirm constructivists' assumption that when a little low level learners are taken in learner-centered instruction based on a constructivism they can also construct knowledge by themselves. To achieve this purpose, the researchers compare the effects of learner-centered instruction based on the constructivism and teacher-centered instruction based on the objective epistemology where second graders learn multiplication facts through the each treatment on learners' reasoning ability and achievement. Some conclusions are drawn from results as follows. First, learner-centered instruction based on a constructivism has significant effect on learners' reasoning ability. Second, learner-centered instruction has slightly positive effect on learners' deductive reasoning ability. Third, learner-centered instruction has more an positive influence on understanding concepts and principles of not-presented mathematical knowledge than teacher-centered instruction when implementing it with a little low level learners.
In this study, we tried to find out the level of inductive reasoning ability and the aspects of visualization components shown in students in the class using exploratory software for the 'congruence and symmetry' unit in the second semester of the 5th grade of elementary school. To this end, classes using GeoGebra, one of the exploratory software, were conducted for a total of 19 students in one class of fifth graders in elementary school, and the results of the students' activities were analyzed. As a result of this study, the level of inductive reasoning ability of students remained at a similar level or developed, and it was shown that students inferred new properties of shapes using various functions of software inductively. In addition, in terms of visualization, students were able to quickly and easily draw shapes that met the conditions, and unlike the paper-and-pencil environment, using the 'measurement' and 'symmetry' functions, they transformed and manipulated complex yet precisely congruent and symmetrical external representations. Based on these analysis results, implications for the use of exploratory software in the area of figures were derived.
This study aimed to investigate the role of domain-specific causal mechanism information and domain-general conditional probability in young children's causal reasoning on psychology and biology. Participants were 121 3-year-olds and 121 4-year-olds recruited from seven childcare centers in Seoul, Kyonggi Province, and Busan. After participants watched moving pictures on psychological and biological phenomena, they were asked to choose appropriate cause and justify their choices. Results of this study were as follows: First, young children made different inferences according to domain-specific causal mechanisms. Second, the developmental level of causal mechanisms has a gap between psychology and biology, and biological knowledge was proved to be separate from psychological knowledge during the preschool period. Third, young children's causal reasoning was different depending on the interaction effect of domain-specific mechanisms and domain-general conditional probability: children could make more inferences based on domain-specific causal mechanisms if conditional probability between domain-appropriate cause and effect was evident. To conclude, it can be inferred that the role of domain-specific causal mechanisms and domain-general conditional probability is not competitive but complementary in young children's causal reasoning.
The equality relation is very important in mechanical theorem proving procedures. A proposed inference rule called RHU-resolution is intended to extend the hyperparamodulation[23, 9] by introducing a bidirectional proof search that simultaneously employs a forward reasoning and a backward reasoning, and generalize it by incorporating beneflts of extended hyper steps with a preprocessing process, that includes a subsumption check in an equality graph and a high level planning. The forward reasoning in RHU-resolution may replace the role of the function substitution link.[9] That is, RHU-deduction without the function substitution link gets a proof. In order to control explosive generation of positive equalities by the forward reasoning, we haue put some restrictions on input clauses and k-pd links, and also have included a control strategy for a positive-positive linkage, like the set-of-support concept, A linking path between two end terms can be found by simple checking of linked unifiability using the concept of a linked unification. We tried to prevent redundant resolvents from generating by preprocessing using a subsumption check in the subsumption based eauality graph(SPD-Graph)so that the search space for possible RHU-resolution may be reduced.
