Power signals resulting from spindle and feed motor, present a rich content of physical information, the appropriate analysis of which can lead to the clear identification of the nature of the tool wear. The partial least-squares regression (PLSR) method has been established as the tool wear analysis method for this purpose. Firstly, the results of the application of widely used techniques are given and their limitations of prior methods are delineated. Secondly, the application of PLSR is proposed. The singular value theory is used to noise reduction. According to grey relational degree analysis, sample variable is filtered as part sample variable and all sample variables as independent variables for modelling, and the tool wear is taken as dependent variable, thus PLSR model is built up through adapting to several experimental data of tool wear in different milling process. Finally, the prediction value of tool wear is compare with actual value, in order to test whether the model of the tool wear can adopt to new measuring data on the independent variable. In the new different cutting process, milling tool wear was predicted by the methods of PLSR and MLR (Multivariate Linear Regression) as well as BPNN (BP Neural Network) at the same time. Experimental results show that the methods can meet the needs of the engineering and PLSR is more suitable for monitoring tool wear.
This paper deals with wind fragility and risk analysis of high rise buildings subjected to stochastic wind load. Conventionally, such problems are dealt in full Monte Carlo Simulation framework, which requires extensive computational time. Thus, to make the procedure computationally efficient, application of metamodelling technique in fragility analysis is explored in the present study. Since, accuracy by the conventional Least Squares Method (LSM) based metamodelling is often challenged, an efficient Moving Least Squares Method based adaptive metamodelling technique is proposed for wind fragility analysis. In doing so, artificial time history of wind load is generated by three wind field models: i.e., a simple one based on alongwind component of wind speed; a more detailed one considering coherence and wind directionality effect, and a third one considering nonstationary effect of mean wind. The results show that the proposed approach is more accurate than the conventional LSM based metamodelling approach when compared to full simulation approach as reference. At the same time, the proposed approach drastically reduces computational time in comparison to the full simulation approach. The results by the three wind field models are compared. The importance of non-linear structural analysis in fragility evaluation has been also demonstrated.
This paper proposes an algorithm that estimates three dimensional array shape calibration about the bottom-mounted sensor array. under the assumption that the active sources are in the far-field with unknown positions. Under some assumptions. we calculate the sensor positions via an algebraic solutions of a least squares problem that the linear equations are related to the sensor positions and directions or arrival. We give examples of algorithm performance from both computer simulations and sea test. We also illustrate the performance of sensor positions estimation as a function of time delay estimation variance and the distribution of the localizing sources.
We develop two methods to select a constant in the RLS (Recursive Least Squares) with the convex regularization. The RLS with the convex regularization was proposed by Eksioglu and Tanc in order to estimate the sparse acoustic channel. However the algorithm uses the regularization constant which needs the information about the true channel response for the best performance. In this paper, we propose two methods to select the regularization constant which don't need the information about the true channel response. We show that the estimation performance using the proposed methods is comparable with the Eksioglu and Tanc's algorithm.
An accurate and robust estimation of center of rotation (CoR) using optical marker trajectory is crucial in human biomechanics. In this regard, the performances of the two prevailing least-squares methods, the Gamage and Lasenby (GL) method, and the Chang and Pollard (CP) method, are verified in this paper. While both methods are sphere-fitting approaches in closed form and require no tuning parameters, they have not been thoroughly verified by comparison of their estimation accuracies. Furthermore, while for both methods, results for stationary CoR locations are presented, cases for perturbed CoR locations have not been investigated for any of them. In this paper, the estimation performances of the GL method and CP method are investigated by varying the range of motion (RoM) and noise amount, for both stationary and perturbed CoR locations. The difference in the estimation performance according to the variation in the amount of noise and RoM was clearly shown for both methods. However, the CP method outperformed the GL method, as seen in results from both the simulated and the experimental data. Particularly, when the RoM is small, the GL method failed to estimate the appropriate CoR while the CP method reasonably maintained the accuracy. In addition, the CP method showed a considerably better predictability in CoR estimation for the perturbed CoR location data than the GL method. Accordingly, it may be concluded that the CP method is more suitable than the GL method for CoR estimation when RoM is limited and CoR location is perturbed.
Linear and non-linear regressions were used to derive the calibration function for the measurement of roxithromycin plasma concentration. Their results were compared with weighted least squares regression by usual weight factors. In this paper the performance of a non-linear calibration equation with the capacity to account empirically for the curvature, y = ax$^{b}$ + c (b $\neq$ 1) is compared with the commonly used linear equation, y = ax + b, as well as the quadratic equation, y = ax$^{2}$+ bx + c. In the calibration curve (range of 0.01 to 10 ${\mu}g/mL$) of roxithromycin, both heteroscedasticity and nonlinearity were present therefore linear least squares regression methods could result in large errors in the determination of roxithromycin concentration. By the non-linear and weighted least squares regression, the accuracy of the analytical method was improved at the lower end of the calibration curve. This study suggests that the non-linear calibration equation should be considered when a curve is required to be fitted to low dose calibration data which exhibit slight curvature.

In this paper, a design method for directional couplers using bilevel microstrip substrates is proposed. This kind of broadside-coupled coupler provides large coupling factors and broadband characteristics which can not be provided by conventional edge-coupled couplers. Physical dimensions needed for design are obtained by numerical analysis of characteristic parameters of the coupler using the least squares residual method, a kind of variational method, and an eigenvalue problem analysis method. A 3[dB] directional coupler is designed by the proposed method at the center frequency of 1 GHz, built, and tested. The validation and accuracy of the method are confirmed by comparing the numerical results with the experimental results.

This paper presents an implicit moving least squares(MLS) difference method for improving the solution accuracy of 1-D free boundary problems, which implicitly updates the topology change of moving interface. The conventional MLS difference method explicitly updates the moving interface; it requires no iterative solution procedure but results in the loss of accuracy. However, the newly developed implicit scheme makes the total system nonlinear involving iterative solution procedure, but numerical verification show that it dramatically elevates the solution accuracy with moderate computation increase. Through numerical experiments for melting problems having moving singularity, it is verified that the proposed method can achieve the second order accuracy.

This paper examines the effect of COVID-19 pandemic on the Philippine stock exchange, peso-dollar rate and retail price of diesel using robust least squares regression and vector autoregression (VAR). The robust least squares regression using MM-estimation method concluded that COVID-19 daily infection has negative and statistically significant effect on the Philippine stock exchange index, peso-dollar exchange rate and retail pump price of diesel. This is consistent with the results of correlation diagnostics. As for the VAR model, the lag values of the independent variable disclose significance in explaining the Philippine stock exchange index, peso-dollar exchange rate and retail pump price of diesel. Moreover, in the short run, the impulse response function confirmed relative effect of COVID-19 daily infections and the variance decomposition divulge that COVID-19 daily infections have accounted for only minor portion in explaining fluctuations of the Philippine stock exchange index, peso-dollar exchange and retail pump price of diesel. In the long term, the influence levels off. The Granger causality test suggests that COVID-19 daily infections cause changes in the Philippine stock exchange index and peso-dollar exchange rate in the short run. However, COVID-19 infection has no causal link with retail pump price of diesel.
