A longitudinal study of the relation of lead in blood to lead in air concentrations among battery workers

  • The relation between lead in air (PbA) and lead in blood (PbB), concentrations was investigated among 44 workers in five major operations in a United States high volume, lead acid battery plant. The study covered a 30 month period in which workers received frequent PbA and PbB determinations, workers remained in a single job, and PbA concentrations averaged below the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) permissible exposure limit of $50{\mu}g/m^{3}$. In both univariate and multivariable linear regressions, longitudinal analyses averaging PbA concentrations over the 30 month study period appeared superior to cross sectional analyses using only six month PbA averages .to model PbB concentrations. The covariate adjusted coefficient ($\alpha$ value) for PbA($\mu/m^{3}$) in models of PbB (${\mu}g/100\;g$) was 1-14. This figure is strikingly higher than that reported in previous studies in the lead acid battery industry in all of which PbA concentrations were substantially higher than in the current study. Plausible explanations for the differences in a: values include non-linearity of the PbA-PbB curve, a higher fraction of large size particulate associated with higher PbA concentrations, survivor bias among workers exposed to higher PbA concentrations, and the cross sectional designs of most previous studies. Despite previously reported problems with the model used by OSHA to predict PbA-PbB relations, the findings of this study are in good agreement with the predictions of that model.

납(Pb) 과 지방수준을 달리한 식이로 사육한 성장기 흰쥐의 체내대사변화 (Metabolic Changes in Growing Rats Fed Diets with Different Levels of Lead and Lipid)

  • This study was performed to investigate the effects of lead poisoning and different levels of dietary lipid on lead and lipid metabolism in the rats. Forty eight male weanling rats of Sprague-Dawley strain weighing 73.1$\pm$11.1g were blocked into 6 groups according to body weight. Dietary lipid were given at the lev딘 of 5, 20 and 40% of total caloric intake and lead were either administered or not. The results obtained are summerized as follows ; 1) Food intake, weight gain, F.E.R. liver and epididymal. fat pad weights, weight and length of bone, hematocrit and hemoglobin content in Pb-adminstered groups were lower than these in Pb-free groups. 2) Plasma lipid and cholesterol levels were tended to be higher in Pb-administered groups than in Pb-free groups, while liver lipid and cholesterol levels were tended to be lower in Pb-adminstered groups. 3) Fecal dry matter excretion was tended to be higher in Pb-adminstered groups than in Pb-free groups, and were increased with increasing dietary lipid level. Daily fecal excretions of lipid and cholesterol were higher in high lipid groups than in low lipid groups and these levels were even higher in the animals exposed to Pb than in Pb-free groups. 4) Pb contents in blood, liver, kidney and bone were significantly higher in Pb administered groups than in Pb-free groups. Pb levels of blood, liver and bone did not show any significant difference among groups with different levels of dietary lipid, but Pb concentration in kidney of Pb-adminstered groups increased with increasing dietary lipid level.

  • Fixation of lead contaminants in the solidification/stabilization using Portland cement has been investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and compressive strength. The presence of lead was observed to produce lead carbonate sulfate hydroxide ($Pb_4SO_4(CO_3)_2(OH)_2$), lead carbonate hydroxide hydrate ($3PbCO_3{\cdot}2Pb(OH)_2{\cdot}H_2O$) and two other unidentified lead salts in cavity areas and was observed to significantly retard the hydration of cement. By 28 days, howevere, the XRD peaks of most of the lead precipitates have essentially disappeared with only residual traces of lead carbonate sulfate hydroxide and lead carbonate hydroxide hydrate evident. After 28 days of curing, hydration appears well advanced with a strong portlandite peak present though C-S-H gel peaks are not particularly evident. Lead species produced with the dissolution of lead precipitates are fixed into the cement matrix to be calcium lead silicate hydrate (C-Pb-S-H) during cement-based solidification.

야관문(Lespedeza Caneata) Ethanol 추출물이 납 투여한 생쥐의 간장과 콩팥에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Lespedeza Caneata ethanol extract on the Liver, Kidneys of Lead administered Mice)

  • 본 연구는 야관문 추출물이 납 투여된 생쥐의 간장과 콩팥에 미치는 영향을 알아보고자 시행하였다. 대조군(Nor), 납 단독투여 4주군 (Pb 4W), 납 단독투여 8주군 (Pb 8W), 납-야관문 복합투여 4주군(Pb-LC 4W), 납-야관문 복합투여 8주군(Pb-LC 8W)으로 나누어 구분하였다. 대조군은 1차 증류수를, 납 단독투여군은 lead acetate를 증류수에 1000ppm으로 용해하여 식수로 공급하였다. 납-야관문 복합투여군은 납을 식수로 공급하면서 야관문을 500 mg/kg 농도로 매일 경구투여 하였다. 혈액의 AST, ALT, BUN 효소활성과 간장, 콩팥의 조직학적 실험을 하여 다음과 같은 결론을 얻었다. AST, ALT, BUN는 대조군에 비해 실험군 모두 증가하였고, 같은 기간의 납 단독투여군 보다 납-야관문 복합투여군에서 수치가 감소하였다. 조직학적 결과는 간장과 콩팥에서 Pb 4W군은 일부가 변형되었고 Pb 8W군은 대부분에서 괴사와 변형이 일어났고 Pb-LC 4W군과 Pb-LC 8W군은 Pb 4W군과 Pb 8W군 비해 변형이 완화되었다. 같은 기간의 납 단독투여군 보다 납-야관문 복합투여군에서 조직 변화가 완화되었다. 이상의 연구결과로 보아 야관문 추출물이 납 투여한 생쥐의 간장과 콩팥의 손상에 대한 보호 효과가 있다고 사료된다.

Growth of lead-based functional crystals by the vertical bridgman method

  • Some lead-based crystals show excellent ferroelectric, piezoelectric or scintillation properties and have attracted much attention in recent years. However, the erosion of the high temperature solution on platinum crucible and the evaporation of PbO component are the main problems often encountered during the crystal growth. In this paper, we reported recent progress on the Bridgman growth of lead-based functional crystals, such as novel relaxor ferroelectric crystals (PZNT and PMNT), scintillation crystals $(PbWO_4,\;PbF_2\;and\;PbClF)$ and piezoelectric crystals $(Pb_5Ge_3O_{11}\;and\;Pb_2KNb_5O_{15}),$ in Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The vertical Bridgman method has been modified to grow PZNT crystals from high temperature solution and as-grown crystals have been characterized. Large size lead-based scintillators, $PbWO_4\;and\;PbF_2$ crystals, have been mass-produced by the vertical Bridgman method in the multi-crucible fumace. These crystals have been supplied to CERN and other laboratories for high-energy physics experiments. The Bridgman growth of piezoelectric crystals $Pb_5Ge_3O_{11}\;and\;Pb_2KNb_5O_{15}$ are discussed also.

경상분지 동남부 연 · 아연광상에 대한 납 동위원소 연구 (Lead Isotope Study on Lead-Zinc Ore Deposits in the Eastern and Southern Parts of the Gyeongsang Basin)

  • 경상분지의 동부와 남부에 분포하는 연 아연광상에서 산출되는 방연석의 납 동위원소 비로부터 광상을 형성한 납이 어떤 기원물질로부터 유래하였는가를 연구하고, 이를 태백산 광화대 내 일부광상들의 납 동위원소 비와 비교 연구하였다. 경상분지내 연 아연광상들의 보통납(common lead) 의 동위원소 비는 $^{206}Pb/^{204}Pb=18.156{\sim}18.377$, $^{207}Pb/^{204}Pb=15.482{\sim}15.638$, $^{208}Pb/^{204}Pb=37.953{\sim}38.605$로서 매우 제한된 영역의 변화를 보인다. 또한 납 동위원소 비들은 광상 납 성장곡선(Cumming과 Richards, 1975)과 평균지각 납 진화곡선(Stacey 와 Kramer, 1975) 의 선상 혹은 하부에 점시 되어 맨틀성분의 개입이 많음을 지시하는 반면, 태백산 광화대의 경우는 진화곡선 상부에 점시 되어 지각 물질의 개입이 많음을 나타내었다. Plumbotectonics Model IV (Zartman과 Haines, 1988)에서는 경상분지의 납들은 대부분 맨틀과 조산대 사이의 영역에, 태백산 광화대의 자료들은 대부분 상부지각선의 선 상이나 그 상부에 점시 된다. 위와같은 납 동위원소 조성이 보여주는 특징과 더불어 경상분지 보통납의 동위원소 비들이 나타내는 선형관계는 낮은 U/Pb와 Th/U의 비를 갖는 기원물질 혹은 결핍맨틀(depleted mantle) 물질과 기반암과 같은 지각 물질간의 혼염에 의한 혼합 아이소크론(mixing isochron)으로 추정된다.

방사선 치료용 전자선의 에너지별 납(Pb) 차폐체 두께 측정 (A Study on the Lead(Pb) Shield Thickness per Electron Beam Energy in Radiotherapy)

  • 본 연구는 임상에서 이용되는 전자선 빔의 에너지별 차폐를 위한 최소한의 납 두께를 측정하여 정량적으로 평가하고 기준을 설정하고자 한다. 전자선 에너지별 납 차폐체의 두께는 최대선량 깊이(dmax)와 조직선량의 기준 깊이인 표면 10 mm 깊이에서 개방 조사야를 기준으로 1차선속의 95%로 감소시킬 수 있는 납 두께를 측정하였다. 측정 결과 6 MeV 전자선의 납 차폐체 두께는 최대선량 깊이에서 1.906 mmPb, 조직선량 기준깊이(10 mm)에서 1.992 mmPb로 나타났으며, 9 MeV 전자선은 2.746 mmPb, 3.743 mmPb, 12 MeV 전자선은 3.718 mmPb, 6.093 mmPb, 16 MeV 전자선은 7.300 mmPb, 15.270 mmPb, 20 MeV 전자선은 16.825 mmPb, 25.090 mmPb로 측정 깊이를 조직선량 기준깊이로 할 때 더 두꺼운 납 차폐체가 필요하였다. 또한 16 MeV 이상의 전자선은 이론식보다 더 두꺼운 납 차폐체가 요구된다.

개인용 공기포집기를 이용한 기중 연농도와 생물학적 연 폭로지표와의 관련성 (Relationship between the Biological Lead Exposure Indices and Air lead Concentrations measured by Personal Air Samplers)

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the relationship between the biological lead exposure indices and air lead concentrations measured by personal air samplers. The 72 occupationally lead exposed workers were observed and the bioiogical lead Exposure indices chosen for this study were blood lead(PbB), urine lead(PbU), zinc protoporphyrin in whole blood(ZPP), $\delta$-aminolevulinic acid in urine(ALAU), $\delta$-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase activity (ALAD), coproporphyrin in urine(CPU) and hemoglobin(Hb). The workers were divided into four groups by air lead concentrations: Group I; under $0.05mg/m^3$, Group II; $0.05-0.10mg/m^3$, Group III; $0.10-0.15mg/m^3$ and Group IV; and over $0.15mg/m^3$. For evaluation the relationship between the biological lead exposure indices and air lead concentrations was used as correlation coefficients. The results obtained were as follows: 1. In Group I, II, III and IV, the mean value of PbB were $25.45{\pm}1.84{\mu}g/dl,\;27.87{\pm}3.53{\mu}g/dl,\;31.21{\pm}1.76{\mu}g/dl\;and\;47.02{\pm}13.96{\mu}g/dl$. Between Group IV and other groups showed statistically significant difference(p<0.05). 2. There was an increasing tendency of PbB, PbU, ALAU and ZPP according to the increase the mean air lead concentration, while ALAD has decreasing tendency. CPU and Hb did not show any constant tendency. 3. Correlation coefficients between PbB, PbU, ZPP, ALAU, ALAD, CPU, Hb and air lead concentration were 0.95, 0.83, 0.89, 0.72, -0.83, 0.51 and -0.45 respectively, and regression coefficient between PbB(Y) and PbA(X) was Y=126.8746X+16.9996(p<0.01).

감액 특성 향상을 위한 하이브리드(Sb/Ca) 액식 연축전지 개발 (Development of Hybrid (Sb/Ca) Flooded Lead-Acid Battery for Minimizing Water Loss)

  • One disadvantage of deep cycle flooded lead-acid batteries is increasing water loss caused by use of (+) Pb-Sb / (-) Pb-Sb alloy grid. Water loss is generated by the emission of hydrogen gas from the (-) electrode during battery charging. In this paper, we maintain cycle life aspect through the development of hybrid flooded lead-acid batteries to which a (+) Pb-Sb / (-) Pb-Ca grid is applied and deal with the improvement of water loss. The amount of water loss compared to that of the (-) Pb-Sb grid decreased when Ca was added to the (-) Pb grid. For the (-) Pb-Ca grid, it was confirmed that the time to reach 0.0 V, at which water decomposition occurs, was increased compared to that of the (-) Pb-Sb grid at the NPV (Negative Potential Voltage). In the cycle life test conducted with the BCI (Battery Council International) standard, compared to the (+) Pb-Ca grid, the (+) Pb-Sb grid increased the life cycle of the batteries and the (+) Pb-Ca grid showed an early end of life due to PbO corrosion layer generation, as determined through SEM / EDS and Tear Down analysis. In conclusion, by addition of Sb to (+) Pb grid and Ca to (-) Pb grid, we developed a hybrid flooded lead-acid battery that meets user requirements to improve water loss characteristics and preserve cycle life characteristics.

Accurate Measurement of Isotope Amount Ratios of Lead in Bronze with Multicollector Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry

  • Isotope amount ratios of lead in a bronze sample have been successfully determined using multicollector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS). Matrix separation conditions were tested and optimized using ion exchange chromatography with anion-exchange resin, AG1-X8, and sequential elution of the 0.5 M HBr and 7 M $HNO_3$ to separate lead from very high contents of copper and tin in bronze matrix. Mercury was also removed efficiently in the optimized separation condition. The instrumental isotope fractionation of lead in the MC-ICP-MS measurement was corrected by the external standard sample bracketing method using an external standard, NIST SRM 981 lead common isotope ratio standard followed by correction of procedure blank to obtain reliable isotope ratios of lead. The isotope ratios, $^{206}Pb/^{204}Pb$, $^{207}Pb/^{204}Pb$, $^{208}Pb/^{204}Pb$, and $^{208}Pb/^{206}Pb$, of lead were determined as $18.0802{\pm}0.0114$, $15.5799{\pm}0.0099$, $38.0853{\pm}0.0241$, and $2.1065{\pm}0.0004$, respectively, and the determined isotope ratios showed good agreement with the reference values of an international comparison for the same sample within the stated uncertainties
