  • In this study, the mixed design of grout with hish strength.high permeation.high durability and environmental stability as the state of the art in material field was performed. Also, the subjects of grouting, grouting effects for ground conditions, and environmental effects were analyzed. According to these results, the fundamental data will be suggested as a design of grouting in the field application. The physical, mechanical and chemical characteristics with particle shape of the grouts were analyzed. Then, the gel-time of grouts, which is essential for workability and permeation range, were controlled. Also, the laboratory model grouting tests were performed to find the characteristics of solidification, permeation and durability with grouts. The ordinary portland, slag and microcement which have been used in the construction field were evaluated fur the environmental effects. To find the leaching of $Cr^{6+}$characteristics in cement grouts, $Cr^{6+}$ leaching tests were performed for the raw materials. Also, the results of leaching test were shorn by surrounding environment. Then, the unconfined compression strength tests were performed with the homo-gel samples, and the amount of changed $Cr^{6+}$ was measured by curing solution.

  • Cobalt (Co) is mainly used to prepare cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and binder metals for WC-Co hard metals. Developing an effective method for recovering Co from WC-Co waste sludge is of immense significance. In this study, Co is extracted from waste cemented carbide soft scrap via mechanochemical milling. The leaching ratio of Co reaches approximately 93%, and the leached solution, from which impurities except nickel are removed by pH titration, exhibits a purity of approximately 97%. The titrated aqueous Co salts are precipitated using oxalic acid and hydroxide precipitation, and the effects of the precipitating agent (oxalic acid and hydroxide) on the cobalt microstructure are investigated. It is confirmed that the type of Co compound and the crystal growth direction change according to the precipitation method, both of which affect the microstructure of the cobalt powders. This novel mechanochemical process is of significant importance for the recovery of Co from waste WC-Co hard metal. The recycled Co can be applied as a cemented carbide binder or a cathode material for lithium secondary batteries.

  • Garnet has been suggested as one of the most promising material for the immobilization of radionuclide in high level waste. But data on its chemical durability are sufficiently available. Accordingly, Gd and Ce garnets were synthesized as imitators for $Pu^{3+}\;and\;Pu^{4+}$ were synthesized, and their leaching rates, the parameters of the chemical durability were measured by changing the conditions. In distilled water, the ranges of leaching rates of Gd and Ce were $1.2{\times}10^{-4}{\sim}4.6{\times}10^{-6}g/m^2/day\;and\;7.5{\times}10^{-5}{\sim}1.8{\times}10^{-7}g/m^2/day$, respectively. A comparison with previous data suggests that the chemical durabilities of garnets synthesized from this study are superior to those of other waste forms. Additional leaching experiments were performed with 0.01M-HCl and 0.01M-NaOH solutions to see Gd and Ce leaching at acidic and alkalinity conditions. In 0.01 H-HCl solution, the ranges of leaching rates of Gd and Ce were $2.5{\times}10^{-1}{\sim}6.9{\times}10^{-3}g/m^2/day\;and\;3.7{\times}10^{-1}{\sim}3.1{\times}10^{-3}g/m^2/day$, respectively, while were $3.1{\times}10^{-4}{\sim}1.3{\times}10^{-6}g/m^2/day\;and\;1.8{\times}10^{-3}{\sim}0g/m^2/day$, respectively in 0.01M-NaOH solution. It is believed that leaching data can be used in understanding chemical durabilities of waste from garnets in acidic and alkaline conditions.

  • In this paper, two leaching tests(batch test & column test) were carried out to estimate the detrimental effects of coal ash leachates. The variation of constituents and concentration of coal ash leachate with the lapse of leachins time was analysed through the column tests. From the test results, it was found coal tach can be classified as a general waste, and all other items except pH of coal ash leachate are satisfied the concentration requirements for the drinking water. It was also found the concentration of coal ash rapidly decrease with the lapse of the leaching time and become the insignificant value after an elapsed time.

  • Insulating rubber gloves with antibacterial and withstand voltage properties were prepared by blending the natural rubber latex(NRL), waterborne polyurethane(PU) and 4N-chitosan. Tensile strength of rubber glove increased with increasing amount of PU, and elongation decreased. The property of withstand voltage of rubber gloves improved with increasing leaching time, and the rubber gloves showed insulating capability of 10000V at leaching time of 3 hours. Little bacteria existed after 4N-chitosan was added to rubber gloves.

  • This paper studies the field applicability of the Special Chemical grouting Method(SCM) in reinforcing and reducing permeability of the back of an existing continuous wall. SCM uses double rod which imposes intermediate pressure$(981\sim9,810kPa)$ to disturb, cut, discharge, and mix the ground. It is observed that a bulb is formed by using cement paste and environmentally friendly injection materials with minimal alkali leaching. Uniaxial compression tests, test for chemical properties and fish poison test are performed. Test results indicate that the method results in higher durability, less leaching through use of the environmentally friendly injection material, and faster mobilization of the strength. In addition, field tests confirm the formation of the bulb and the seepage cutoff wall.

  • 1. EAF Dust in Japan - Generation and Characteristics. The quantity of dust generated from EAF shops in Japan was estimated to be 520,000 tons/year in 1999. Extremely fine dust (or fume) is formed in the EAF by metal vaporization. Its characteristics such as chemical compositions, phases, particle size, leaching of heavy metal are mentioned. 2. EAF Dust Treatment Methods in Japan. In 1999, 61% of EAF dust was treated by regional zinc recovery processing routes, 25% went to landfill disposal, 4% was reused as cement material, and 10% was treated by on-site processing routes. The problems of EAF dust treatment methods in Japan are: (1) very high treatment cost, and (2) heavy environmental load (leaching of heavy metal, emission of dioxins, depletion of disposal sites, etc). It has been much hoped for that new dust management technology would be developed. 3. New technology of EAF dust treatment in Japan. In Japan, some new technologies of EAF dust treatment have been developed, and some others are in the developing stages. Following five processes are mentioned:. (1) Smelting reduction process by Kawasaki Steel, (2) DSM process by Daido Steel, (3) VHR process by Aichi Steel, (4) On-site dust direct recycling technology, and (5) Process technology of direct separation and recovery of iron and zinc metals contained in high temperature EAF off gas by the Japan Research and Development Center fur Metals.

  • With the aim to utilize pine wood(Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc.) as an interior building materials, such as flooring material, monoethylene glycol(MEG) resin solution was impregnated into greenwood. Specimens of three different qualities, that is, normal wood, resinous wood and compression wood, were prepared. Distribution of resin element(phosphorus) in MEG resin solution-impregnated woods and preservative effectiveness against brown rot fungi(Tyromyces palustris and Serpula lacrymans) of these woods were investigated. The results were as follows: 1. The concentration of phosphorus into cell walls of resinous wood and compression wood was lower compared to that of normal wood. This shows that the quality of wood has an influence on the penetration of MEG resin solution into the wood. It was shown from a leaching test that MEG resin could be leached out easily from the cell walls. 2. The resinous wood and compression wood, even without MEG resin solution impregnation had high decay resistance. For normal wood, significant improvement of preservative effectiveness was observed after impregnation of MEG resin solution. It was shown that MEG resin was leached out from the woods after leaching test, resulting in the reduction of preservative effectiveness. From this result, suitability of MEG resin solution-impregnated woods as an interior materials was recognized.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the proper mixing ratio of ordinary portland cement and Bottom Ash to recycle the Bottom Ash, which is an industrial waste. After the evaluation, the compressive strength and durability were assessed using the mixture of completely weathered soil (Hwangto), weathered granite soil, and Bentonite. Then environmental friendliness of this mixed material was examined through heavy metal leaching method. It was found out that proper mixing ratio is 6:4, and that the 6% mixture quantity of completely weathered soil (Hwangto), weathered granite soil, and Bentonite is the most effective for compressive strength and durability It was also found out through heavy metal leaching method that the Bottom Ash could be below the standard of the Clean Water Law.
