In the present study, chitosan based self-healing anticorrosion coatings were prepared by layer by layer (lbl) addition of chitosan (Ch) and polyvinyl butyral (PVB) on mild carbon steel substrate. Chitosan coatings exhibited enhanced coating stability and corrosion resistance in aggressive environments by the application of a PVB top layer. Chitosan layer in the lbl coatings have been modified by using glutaraldehyde (Glu) and silica ($SiO_2$). Performance of different coatings was tested using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and immersion test. The best anticorrosion performance was observed in case of 10 % Ch_$SiO_2$_PVB coatings, which withstand immersion test over 25 days in 0.5 M salt solution without visible corrosion. 10 % Ch_$SiO_2$ coatings without the PVB top layer didn't last more than 3days. Application of PVB top layer sealed the defects in the chitosan pre-layer and improved its hydrophobic nature as well. Raman spectra and SEM of steel surfaces after corrosion study and removal of PVB_Ch/Glu_PVB coatings showed a passive layer of iron oxide, attributing to the self-healing nature of these coatings. Conducting particle like graphene reinforcement of chitosan in the lbl coatings enhanced corrosion resistance of chitosan coatings.

Highly corrosion resistance performance of CrAlSiN coatings were obtained by applying ultrathin $Al_2O_3$ thin films using atomic layer deposition (ALD) method. CrAlSiN coatings were prepared on Cr adhesion layer/SUS304 substrates by a hybrid coating system of arc ion plating and high power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS) method. And, ultrathin $Al_2O_3$ passivation layer was deposited on the CrAlSiN/Cr adhesion layer/SUS304 sample to protect CrAlSiN coatings by encapsulating the whole surface defects of coating using ALD. Here, the high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX) analysis revealed that the ALD $Al_2O_3$ thin films uniformly covered the inner and outer surface of CrAlSiN coatings. Also, the potentiodynamic and potentiostatic polarization test revealed that the corrosion protection properties of CrAlSiN coatings/Cr/SUS304 sample was greatly improved by ALD encapsulation with 50 nm-thick $Al_2O_3$ thin films, which implies that ALD-$Al_2O_3$ passivation layer can be used as an effect barrier layer of corrosion.
Zirconia coatings are performed by the plasma spraying on the substrate of Al-Si alloy. In case of plasma sprayed ceramic coatings, it is important to control properly residual stress occurred during cooling process. Residual stress in coating layer varies with sprayed conditions and is influenced greatly by the coating layer thickness. Surface residual stress due to coating layer thickness is measured by X-ray diffraction method and the residual stress in coating layer is estimated by the deflection of coating layer when the restraint force in substrate was removed. When zirconia was coated on the substrate, tensile residual stress remains on zirconia coated surface layer. The tensile stress is increased to 0.35mm thickness and after 0.45mm thickness it is decreased abrouptly. A thick bond and composite coating reduce the zirconia surface stress and composite coating controls effectively the thick zirconia surface stress.

Different layers of zirconium nitride (ZrN) and hydroxyapatite (HA) coatings were prepared on cp Ti substrate for biomedical applications. The main idea is to improve the mechanical strength as well as the biocompatibility of the coating. ZrN is known for its high mechanical strength, corrosion resistance. HA is well known for its biocompatibility properties. Hence, in this study, both materials were coated on a cp Ti substrate with bottom layer with ZrN for good bonding with substrate and the top layer with HA for induce bioactivity. Middle layer was formed by a composite of HA and ZrN. Detail analyses of the layered coatings for its structural, morphological, topographical properties were carried out. Then the mechanical property of the layered coatings was analyzed by nanoindentation. Biomimetic growths of apatite on the functionally graded coatings were determined by simulated body fluid method. This study provides promising results to use this kind of coatings in biomedical field.
The objective of this study was to improve properties of plasma sprayed HAp layer to titanium substrate by introducing an intermediate layer with two different methods. Before applying Zn doped HAp coating on titanium substrate, an intermediate layer was introduced by titanium plasma spray or titanium anodization. Heat treatments were conducted for some samples after titanium intermediate layer was formed. Zn doped HAp top layer was applied by plasma spraying. Three-point bending test and pull-off adhesion test were performed to determine the adhesion of Zn doped HAp coatings to substrates. Long-term credibility of Zn doped HAp plasma sprayed coatings on titanium was assessed by electrochemical impedance measurements in Hanks' solution. It was found that both titanium plasma sprayed and titanium anodized intermediate layer had excellent credibility. Strong adhesion to the titanium substrate was confirmed after 12 weeks of immersion for coating samples with titanium plasma sprayed intermediate layer. Samples with titanium anodized intermediate layer showed good bending strength. However, they showed relatively poor resistance against pulling off. The thickness of titanium anodized intermediate layer can be controlled much more precisely than that of plasma sprayed one, which is important for practical application.

$Al_2$$O_3$ coatings were deposited on M2 high speed steels by the plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) process, using a gas mixture of AlC1$_3$, $H_2$, $CO_2$ and Ar $Al_2$$O_3$ coatings had interference color and showed amorphous phase. $A1_2$X$A1_3$/($Ti_{0.5}$ /$Al_{0.5}$ )N double layer coatings were produced in the sequence of substrate $NH_3$ plasma pretreatment, ($Ti_{0.5}$$Al_{0.5}$)N depoition process, $Al_2$$O_3$ deposition process. $Al_2$$O_3$/( $Ti_{0.5}$A $l_{0.5}$)N double layer coatings showed NaCl structure in ( $Ti_{0.5}$A $l_{0.5}$)N layer and amorphous phase in A1$_2$$O_3$ layer. It was shown that $Al_2$$O_3$ columns continuously grew onto ( $Ti_{0.5}$A $l_{0.5}$)N columns. ( $Ti_{0.5}$A $l_{0.5}$)N single coating and $Al_2$$O_3$/( $Ti_{0.5}$A $l_{0.5}$)N double layer coating were oxidized at $700^{\circ}C$, 80$0^{\circ}C$, 90$0^{\circ}C$ for 1hr, 3hr in atmosphere. At 80$0^{\circ}C$, single layer coatings were oxidized, which were examined substrate oxide particle. But $Al_2$$O_3$/ ( $Ti_{0.5}$A $l_{0.5}$)N double layer coatings maintained the asdeposited state. Therefore, $Al_2$$O_3$/ ( $Ti_{0.5}$A $l_{0.5}$)N double layer coatings have moreexcellent oxidation resistance than ( $Ti_{0.5}$A $l_{0.5}$)N single layer coatings.X> 0.5/)N single layer coatings.s.
$TiB_2$-TiN double-layer coating have been prepared by ion beam enhanced deposition. AES, XRD, TEM and HRTEM were employed to characterize the $TiB_2$ layer. The microhardness of the coatings was evaluated by an ultra low-load microhardness indenter system, and the tribological behavior was examined by a ball-on-disc tribology wear tester. It was found that in a single titanium diboride layer, the composition is uniform along the depth of the film, and it is mainly composed of nanocrystalline $TiB_2$ with hexagonal structure, which resulted from the ion bombardment during the film growth. The hardness of the $TiB_2$ films increases with increasing ion energy, and approaches a maximum value of the $TiB_2$ films increases with increasing ion energy, and approaches a maximum value of 39 Gpa at ion energy of 85 keV. The tribological property of the TiB2 films is also improved by higher energy of 85keV. The tribological property of the $TiB_2$ films is also improved by higher energy ion beam bombardment. There is no major disparity in the mechanical properties of double-layer $TiB_2$/TiN coatings and TiN/$TiB_2$ coatings. Both show an improved wear resistance compared with single-layer $TiB_2$ films. The adhesion of double-layer coatings is also superior to that of single-layer films.
Zr-O ($Zr-ZrO_2$) cermets solar selective coatings with a double cermets layer film structure were prepared using a DC (direct current) magnetron sputtering method. The typical film structure from surface to bottom substrate were an $Al_2O_3$ anti-reflection layer on a double Zr-O cermets layer on an Al metal infrared reflection layer. Optical properties of optimized Zr-O cermets solar selective coating had an absorptance of ${\alpha}\;=\;0.95$ and thermal omittance of ${\epsilon}\;=\;0.10\;(100^{\circ}C)$. The absorbing layer of Zr-O cermets coatings on glass and silicon substrate was identified as being amorphous by using XRD. AFM showed that ZF-O cermets layers were very smooth and their surface roughness were approximately $0.1{\sim}0.2 nm$. The chemical analysis of the cermets coatings were determined by using XPS. Chemical shift of photoelectron binding energy was occurred due to the change of Zr-O cermets coating structure deposited with increase in oxygen flow rate. The result of thermal stability test showed that the Zr-O cermets solar selective coating was stable for use at temperature below $350^{\circ}C$.

This study investigated the corrosion protection by electrodeposited copper layer on AZ31 Mg alloy with and without additional silver layer by immersion test, salt spray test, OCP transient and potentiodynamic polarization experiment. The single electrodeposited Cu layer on AZ31 Mg alloy showed a nodular structure with many imperfections of crevices between the nodules, which resulted in the fast initiation of pitting corrosion within first few hours of immersion. Double-layer coating of Cu and outer Ag layer slightly increased the initiation time for pitting corrosion. Triple-layer coatings of Cu/Ag/Cu exhibited the most efficient corrosion protection of AZ31 Mg alloy, compared to the single- and double-layer coatings. Surface morphology of the outer Cu layer in the triple-layer was changed from the nodular structure to fine particle structure with no crevices due to the presence of an additional Ag layer. Thus, the improved corrosion resistance of AZ31 Mg alloy by electrodeposited Cu/Ag or Cu/Ag/Cu layers is readily ascribed to the decreased number of imperfections in the electrodeposited layers due to the additional silver layer. It is concluded that the additional silver layer provides many nucleation sites for the second Cu plating, resulting in the formation of finer and denser structure than the first Cu electrodeposit.
Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are rapidly improving in capacity and life cycle characteristics to meet the requirements of a wide range of applications, such as portable electronics, electric vehicles, and micro- or nanoelectro-mechanical systems. Recently, atomic layer deposition (ALD), one of the vapor deposition methods, has been explored to expand the capability of LIBs by producing near-atomically flat and uniform coatings on the shell of nanostructured electrodes and membranes for conventional LIBs. In this paper, we introduce various ALD coatings on the anode, cathode, and separator materials to protect them and improve their electrochemical and thermomechanical stability. In addition, we discuss the effects of ALD coatings on the three-dimensional structuring and conduction layer through activation of electrochemical reactions and facilitation of fluent charge collection.
