  • In steel frames, the analysis and design techniques are based on either idealized fixed or pinned connections. In this case, it has the advantage that the structural analysis and the design procedure were simplified, but there could be given different results of analysis between the real steel frame connections and the idealized fixed and pinned connection. This is because the real connections would be analyzed by semi-rigid, and have some transfer of moment and rotational constraint about the loads. In this study, structural analysis program with considered connections that have joint rigidity of fixed, pinned and semi-rigid, was developed. Then, the effects of joint rigidity on strength and displacement. in steel frames subjected to lateral forces and axial forces, were investigate, and the results were compared with those of the Midas Gen. w program.

  • This study presents the assessment of pseudostatic approach for obtaining the internal response of Single Column/Shaft subjected to earthquake loading. In numerical procedure, various lateral load transfer characteristics (p-y curve and Bi-linear curve) were used to model the nonlinear behavior of soil reactions including soil-pile interaction. The analysis using nonlinear soil model could estimate the seismic performance of soil-pile system, despite its relative simplicity. It was found that lateral behavior of single column/shaft obtained from the response displacement method was larger than those by seismic intensity method. To investigate the effects of soil-pile rigidity and pile head condition on the internal pile response, parametric studies were carried out for various soil models. The results from numerical analysis showed that lateral deflection was decreased with fixed condition of pile head and decreasing the soil-pile rigidity. The seismic analysis using Bi-linear model of JRA could reasonably predict the lateral behavior of Single Column/Shaft.

  • In this study, we analyzed lateral behavior of connected foundation for transmission tower in clay. For this study, we performed model lateral load test, measured load-displacement curve of connected foundation. For the tests, we manufactured connected foundation model that consider a change of rigidity, installed various measuring sensors for understanding of elements and general foundation behavior. From the test results, we measured load capacities using various methods, compared and analyzed these capacities.

  • Parametric studies on nonhomogeneous pile and homogeneous pile installed in clay were performed through the developed technique to investigate the effects of considered factors on the lateral pile behaviors. Values of the parameters with embedment depths of the two piles having different flexural rigidity show that values of the parameters for more rigid pile were greater than those for smaller one. Parameters for the case of the nonhomogeneous pile were converged to the same ones of the homogeneous pile as nodal point moves away from point of material boundary. In order to determine adequate upper length of the nonhomogeneous pile, changing patterns of the parameters, lateral displacement, member forces and so forth should be compared.

  • Influence of lateral spring constant on energy dissipation and load reduction factor with erespect to lateral vibration of steel sheet pile installed by vibratory pile driver. Energy dissipation and load reduction factor varying with free length of steel sheet pile are more affected by eccentricity than flexural rigidity of steel sheet pile regardless of the magnitudes of lateral spring constants. Load reduction factors were converged when lateral spring constant was equal or larger than 10000N/m.

  • In this study, we performed a loading test to evaluate the effect of load distribution on continuous two-span plate-girder bridges with or without bottom lateral bracing using one-fifth-scale bridge specimens. From the test results, when specimens with lateral bracing were loaded eccentrically, the load distribution capacity of the concrete deck and cross beam improved and greater loading was distributed to the other side of the girder subjected to loading. The load distribution rate of the specimens with and without lateral bracing system was evaluated from the analytical model that was verified by the test results. From the result of the quantitative evaluation, when specimen without lateral bracing was loaded eccentrically, mostly 21% of loading according to the concrete deck was distributed to the other side of the girder subjected to loading. However, when specimen with lateral bracing was loaded eccentrically, the load distribution rate increased by 1.7 times as all cross beams, bracing and concrete deck participated in load distribution. The reason is that the torsional rigidity increased as the model with lateral bracing behaved like a pseudo-closed box section.

  • Rehabilitation and retrofitting of structures designed in accordance to standard design codes is an essential practice in structural engineering and design. For steel structures, one of the challenges is to strengthen the panel zone as well as its analysis in moment-resisting frames. In this research, investigations were undertaken to analyze the influence of the panel zone in the response of structural frames through a computational approach using ETABS software. Moment-resisting frames of six stories were studied in supposition of real panel zone, different values of rigid zone factor, different thickness of double plates, and both double plates and rigid zone factor together. The frames were analyzed, designed and validated in accordance to Iranian steel building code. The results of drift values for six stories building models were plotted. After verifying and comparing the results, the findings showed that the rigidity lead to reduction in drifts of frames and also as a result, lower rigidity will be used for high rise building and higher rigidity will be used for low rise building. In frames with story drifts more than the permitted rate, where the frames are considered as the weaker panel zone area, the story drifts can be limited by strengthening the panel zone with double plates. It should be noted that higher thickness of double plates and higher rigidity of panel zone will result in enhancement of the non-linear deformation rates in beam elements. The resulting deformations of the panel zone due to this modification can have significant influence on the elastic and inelastic behavior of the frames.

  • The load distribution and deformation of single piles which is embedded in Jumunjin sand and Kimhae clay are investigated, based on small scale model tests. Special attention is given to the consideration of flexural rigidity in laterally loaded piles. To consider the flexural rigidity of the pile, tests are performed with the aluminium piles of three different length under different relative densities and undrained shear strength. The test results indicate that the initial slope from the results of tests is proportional to the depth and pile-soil rigidity in both soils. But the increasing rate of the initial slope in the clay is less than in the sand. In addition, the soil resistance is more related to the depth and soil condition than the pile rigidity. Base on the test results, an empirical formula is proposed, which is good agreement with previously published small scale model test and field lateral load test.

  • A study on the evaluationof the proper spacing and required bending rigidity of cross beams in composite multiple I-girder bridge without lateral and sway bracing system was performed. For the purpose, a two-lane 40m simple span and 40+50+40m continuous sample bridge with four girders was designed. For the sample bridges, structural analysis under the design loads including dead load before and after composite, live load, and seismic loads has been performed. The material and geometric nonlinear analysis under dead load before composite has also been performed to evaluate lateral buckling strength of the steel-girder-cross beam grillage. Based on the two phase anlayses, proper spacing and bending righidity of cross beams were proposed.

  • Load tests for fourteen small-scale foundation models combined with geotextile, sand mat and rigid mat were conducted to study the effect of geotextile(G/T), sand mat(S/M), and foundation types on deformation of foundation soils. In addition, the experimental results were compared with those obtained from numerical analysis using a software program. The main conclusions were summarized as follows: 1. The restraint effect on G/T is more outstanding on the lateral displacement than on the vertical one. 2. The single use of S/M has better effect on the restraint of vertical displacement than lateral one. 3. The use of both S/M and G/T is required for the restraint of lateral and vertical displacement. 4. Multi-layered foundation with large rigidity shows similar tendency to that of foundation reinforced with S/M and G/T.
