  • The striped fruit fly, Bactrocera scutellata, damages pumpkin and other cucurbitaceous plants. The developmental period of each stage was measured at seven constant temperatures (15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30, and $33{\pm}1.0^{\circ}C$). The developmental time of eggs ranged from 4.2 days at $15^{\circ}C$ to 0.9 days at $33^{\circ}C$. The developmental period of larvae was 4.2 days at $15^{\circ}C$, and slowed in temperatures above $27^{\circ}C$. The developmental period of pupa was 21.5 days at $15^{\circ}C$ and 7.6 days at $33^{\circ}C$. The mortality of eggs was 17.1% at $15^{\circ}C$ and 22.9% at $33^{\circ}C$, Larval mortalities (1st, 2nd, 3rd) were 24.1, 27.3 and 18.2%, respectively, at $15^{\circ}C$, Pupal mortalities were 18.2% at $15^{\circ}C$ and 23.1% at $33^{\circ}C$. The relationship between developmental rate and temperature fit both a linear model and a nonlinear model. The lower threshold temperatures of eggs, larvae, and pupae were 12.5, 10.7, and $6.3^{\circ}C$, respectively, and threshold temperature of the total immature period was $8.5^{\circ}C$. The thermal constants required to complete the egg, larval, and pupal stages were 33.2, 118.3, and 181.2 DD, respectively. The distribution of each development stages was described by a 3-parameter Weibull function.

  • In this experiment, investigated toxicity evaluation of chemicals using Asian toad embryos, along FETAX(Frog Embryo Teratogenesis Assay-Xenopus) protocol. Asian toad, Bufo gargarizans embryo incubated and investigation of Benomyl(Germicide), Carbofuran(Insecticide) and Thiobencarb(Herbicide) effect by probit analysis. As a result, depends on the concentrations of Benomyl, Carbofuran and Thiobencarb, along mortality and malformation rates were increases and larval body length were decreased. The teratogenic concentration(EC50) of Benomyl, Carbofuran and Thiobencarb were 1.03, 8.74, 4.98mg/ℓ, respectively. And when exposed to Benomyl, larvae responded most sensitively to malformations. Embryo lethal concentration (LC50) Benomyl, Carbofuran and Thiobencarb were 7.26, 560.72, 16.87mg/ℓ, respectively. And Benomyl were at the lowest concentration of lethal the embryos. The teratogenic index(TI) were 7.05 in Benomyl, 64.16 in Carbofuran and 3.39 in Thiobencarb, thus TI values were above 1.5, which is the criterion of teratogenicity. Three of the pesticides used in this study were considered to be a teratogenic substances and Carbofuran was the most potent teratogen. And more specific researches are needed to investigate the effects of pesticides on the embryo development of toads and amphibians and their mechanism.

  • Egg development and early life history of the Korean spine loach, Cobitis tetralineata, were investigated in the present study. Adult fish were sampled using spoon nets at the Seomjin River in Jeongsan-ri, Bokheong-myeon, Sunchang-gun, Jeollanbuk-do, Korea, July 2013. Eggs were obtained after injecting Ovarprim into females. Eggs were then artificially fertilized using the Dry method in the laboratory. Mature eggs were slightly adhesive and transparent with grey coloring, and measured $1.04{\pm}0.03mm$ ($mean{\pm}SD$) in diameter. Hatching of the embryo occurred approximately 56 hours after fertilization at $25^{\circ}C$ of water temperature, and the average size of newly hatched larvae was about $4.6{\pm}0.11mm$ in total length. At fifth day after hatching, the larval full length reached $6.8{\pm}0.28mm$ on average and their yolk sac had been completely absorbed. At 17th day after hatching, larva entered the juvenile stage and reached $9.8{\pm}0.50mm$ in total length. At 100th day after hatching, the formation of Gambetta's zone of four line was complete and juveniles were similar in general appearance to adults, and they averaged $34.7{\pm}5.77mm$ in total length.

  • The development of Japanese geoduck, Panopea japonica, grown under culture conditions, has been examined through the morphological characteristics in fertilized egg, larvae and juvenile. Gametes were stripped from ripe broodstock and placed into two separate containers. Eggs were washed through a $40{\mu}m$ sieve and fertilized with dilute sperm solution. Developing larvae were maintained at $19{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. Fertilized eggs with $81.6{\mu}m$ diameter developed to trochophores within 14 h and to D-stage larvae ($116{\mu}m$ shell length) within 27 h. Larvae were spontaneously settled at shell length of $311{\mu}m$ after 20 days. The hatching from fertilized eggs and larval rearing were normally available in $18.5-21.5^{\circ}C$, and the growth was good in a cashmilon substrate, as well as sand. After rearing of day 108 from metamorphosis, the shell length of juvenile P. japonica reached 13 mm, and growth rate of shell length of the juvenile was $117.5{\mu}m/d$.

  • Greeling, Hexagrammos otakii Jordan et Starks is commonly found at the coastal waters of Korea and Japan. The authors carried out the artificial insemination in the laboratory on Dec, 17, 1987, and reared the hatched larvae in an aquarium. The eggs were demersal and adhesive, and their diameters were 2.00~2.15mm. Color of yolk was light yellow in the early stage, and then turned to orange before hatching. The yolk had numerous tiny oil globules. Hatching began about 477hours after insemination under water temperature of $10.0{\sim}14.5^{\circ}C$. The newly hatched larvae were elongate in shape and 7.48~8.25mm in total length(TL) with 49~50 myomeres. The larvae absorbed the yolk material and oil globules completely in 5days after hatching and became postlarvae. In 17days after hatching, mean total length of the larvae was 9.85mm, and the caudal notochord flex at $45^{\circ}$. In 23days, total length reached 10.54mm. The part of the fin-fold of the future dorsal and anal fins became high. Spawning season of the Greenling is known to be from November to January in the southern coast of Korea.

  • Some high frequency sounds alter physiological processes of the beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua. This study investigated the effect of ultrasound (${\geq}$ 20 kHz) on larval feeding, pupal development, and adult mating behavior of S. exigua. Ultrasound suppressed feeding behavior of fifth instar larvae, and 30 or 45 kHz treatment inhibited more than 50% of feeding activity. Larvae treated with ultrasound exhibited alterations in major nutrient compositions in the hemolymph plasma. Plasma protein levels decreased with an increase in ultrasound frequency. In contrast, sugar levels increased with an increase in ultrasound frequency. Lipid levels increased with an increase in ultrasound frequency up to 30 kHz and then decreased at treatments > 30 kHz. Hemocytes, the fat body, and epidermis expressed three heat shock proteins and apolipophorin III. Ultrasound treatment markedly inhibited expression of some stress-related genes. Ultrasound treatment also inhibited S. exigua pupal development by extending the pupal developmental period and preventing adult emergence. Last, ultrasound treatment significantly inhibited adult mating behavior, which resulted in a significant decrease in female fecundity. These results show that ultrasound is a physiological stress to S. exigua.

  • Observation of morphological changes during larval and juvenile stages of the halfbeak fish, Hyporhampus sajori (Temminck et Schlegel), was made based on samples of fertilized eggs collected on the shores of Youngil Bay, Phohang-shi, Korea, on May 27, 1991, and incubated in the laboratory. During the incubation period, water temperature fluctuated between $17.6^{\circ}C$ and $23.2^{\circ}C$. The newly hatched larvae were elongated and 7.0~8.50 mm in total length (TL) with 40~42+17~18 = 59~60 myotomes. Numerous melanophores were on the head, mid-dorsal part of the body, intestine, and the tail part of the notochord. Three days after hatching the larvae had attained 8.60~10.90 m in TL, had completely absorbed the yolk, and the caudal notochord was flexed $45^{\circ}$ upward. At this time, it was attained postlarvae stage. Thirty-seven days after hatching the postlarvae were 32.37~44.95 mm in TL and had reached the juvenile stage. All fins were formed with a complete set of fin rays with the following counts: dorsal fin rays 16~17; pectoral f in rays 6; ventral fin rays 12~14; caudal fin rays 11~12+11~12 = 22~24.

  • Egg development and early life history of the Korean natural monument fish Hemibarbus mylodon (Pisces: Cyprinidae) were investigated to provide basic data on biological characteristics and ecological recovery. Adult fish were collected from nature and transferred to the laboratory. For the first time, artificial maturation of females and males succeeded after 15 months of indoor culture. Mature eggs and sperm were obtained using Ovaprim injections (0.5 mL/kg) and then the eggs were fertilized using the dry method in the laboratory. The mature eggs were adhesive, turbid, and greyish; they averaged $2.21{\pm}0.06mm$ (n=30) in diameter. The embryos began to hatch about 78 h after fertilization at a water temperature $20{\pm}1^{\circ}C$, and the newly-hatched larvae were $6.6{\pm}0.75mm$ in total length (TL). At 14 days after hatching, the post-larval individuals were $13.5{\pm}0.23mm$ (TL), and their yolk sacs were completely absorbed. Twenty one days after hatching, they entered the juvenile stage and reached $13.5{\pm}0.23mm$ (TL). At 100 days after hatching, their band patterns, external form, and a pair of barbels were similar to those of adults, and they averaged $33.0{\pm}4.25mm$ (TL). The breeding technology and characteristics of early life history obtained in this study will be very helpful for conservation of H. mylodon in nature.
