Differently from BSCCO tapes which are fabricated by powder-in-tube method, the coated conductors are made by the evaporation of YBCO on metal substrate. Due to this structural merit, although the coated conductors are generally used for large current transportation, they are expected to be favorable to the purpose of the fault current limitation as well. In this study, using YBCO coated conductor having copper stabilizer formed by plating technique(produced by Superpower Co.), we investigated the over-current characteristics of the coated conductor. The coated conductors had 85 A $I_c$ and 90 K $T_c$. The resistance of the conductor was 0.93 $m{\Omega}/cm$ at 300 K and 0.17 $m{\Omega}/cm$ at the temperature right above $T_c$. To the coated conductors, we applied the voltages of the range from 150 $V_{rms}$ to 230 $V_{rms}$ and measured the V-I curves using four probe method. From the results, we could analyze the electric behavior of the coated conductor in flux flow state. As the current exceed $I_c$, the currents were distributed into the superconductor and metal stabilizer. The amounts of the currents shared through both current paths were calculated under the assumption that the ,Joule heating was perfectly eliminated by $LN_2$ surrounding the conductor. Finally, the condition for the stable current flowing state which does not affect the conductor was established from the analysis on the over-current characteristics.

We designed and manufactured a 1.8T high temperature superconducting(HTS) insert coil for a NMR magnet operated at 4.2 K. Suitable HTS superconductor and HTS coil were carefully designed and developed. We have selected multi-filamentary Bi2223 conductor fabricated by American Superconductor Corporation(AMSC). The selected conductor consists of Bi2223 filaments of 55, silver stabilizer and stainless steel reinforcement tapes. Therefore, it shows good hoop strength as well as compression tolerance. The conductor has a tape cross-section of 0.31mm x 4.8mm. the Bi2223 conductor shows large anisotropy of critical current. The critical current of conductor in magnetic field parallel to the flat surface are much higher than that in magnetic field perpendicular. The HTS coil has an inner diameter of 78 mm, an outer diameter of 127 mm and a coil length of 600 mm. In this paper, the detailed design, fabrication and test results on the HTS insert coil are presented.
This paper presents the numerical simulation results on the moving type electrodynamic suspension (EDS) simulator and static type EDS simulator using high-Tc superconducting (HTS) levitation magnet. The levitation force of the EDS system is formed by the reaction between the moving magnet and the fixed ground conductor. The possible two ways to simulate the EDS system were simulated in this paper by using finite element method (FEM). The first way was the moving type simulator which consists of the fixed HTS magnet and the moving ground conductor. The second way was the static type simulator which consists of the fixed magnet, the fixed ground conductor and the ac current supply system. To verify the characteristics of high speed EDS system with the moving type simulator heavy, large and fast moving ground conductor is needed. The static type simulator can get the characteristics of the high speed EDS system by applying equivalent ac current to velocity, therefore it does not need large moving part. The static type EDS simulator, which can consist of an HTS magnet, the fixed ground conductor(s), an AC power supply and the measuring devices, also test the effect of the shape of the ground conductor easily. The plate type ground conductor made stronger levitation force than ring type ground conductor. Although the outer diameter 335 mm ring type ground conductor (Ring3) was larger than the outer diameter 235 mm ground conductor (Ring2), the levitation force by Ring2 was stronger than that by Ring3. From the calculation results on this paper, the consideration of the magnetic flux distribution according to the levitation height should be included in the process of the ground conductor design.

We have developed a small-sized superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) device, which provides electric power with high quality to sensitive electric loads. In large magnets such as the SMES magnets the stability, which is determined by several factors, e.g. conductors cooling condition and operating current, magnets winding structure, is a crucial problem. The effect of the cooling condition, the copper ratio, and the conductor's size upon the recovery currents was investigated experimentally. The results indicate that the recovery current characteristics of the strands vary considerably according to their insulation method. In the fully insulated strands with a low copper ratio, the recovery current densities range from 10 to 20 % of their engineering critical current densities. The recovery current density of the 30-conductor with a cooling channel is about a factor of 1.8 higher than that without a cooling channel.

Isolated phase bus(IPS) has a special structure for carrying large current generated by a generator to a main transformer. In the analysis of IPB, the understanding of the magnetic field distribution generated by large current is important. Especially, while the bus conductor current is flowing, almost same amount of current as bus conductor current is induced in the enclosures under the influence of time varying magnetic field, and therefore the large electric loss and the deterioration of insulating capability might occur due to Joule heating effect. Hence for the optimal design of IPB satisfying the condition to minimize the loss, the accurate analysis of magnetic field distribution and the eddy current characteristics of three phase isolated phase bus have been investigated. In the analysis of time varying magnetic field, instead of finite difference method(FDM) which is generally used, finite element method with phasor concept is investigated under the assumption that the bus current is purely sinusoidal. The characteristics is studied along the phase angle by comparing the effect of eddy current on the magnetic field distribution with the case that eddy current is not considered, and also the effect of material, thickness and radius of enclosure on the eddy current distribution is discussed.
With continuous development of the 2nd generation HTS conductor, the critical current of the conductor is also increasing. However, many applications require more than 2 conductors in parallel to transport large current. Applications such as HTS power cables and some HTS current leads usually need much larger transport current than that provided by a single conductor and they require more than several tens of HTS conductors. In the case of parallel connection of multiple HTS conductors, the current distribution depends on the contact resistance of each conductor at the terminals for DC operation. The non-uniform distribution of the terminal resistances results in a non-uniform distribution of the current. The resultant current non-uniformity affects on the measurement of the I-V curve and the thermal performance of the multiple conductors. This paper describes the I-V curves obtained from multiply connected HTS conductors with different terminal contact resistances to investigate the relationship between the distorted I-V curve and heat generation.
According to the improvement of HTS conductor, HTS tapes which have the high current capacity have been recently researched in several nations. For large power application, AC loss is the most important issue in the development of AC superconducting power devices because it is closely related to the system operation efficiency. In 1st generation wire of HTS conductor, BSCCO, AC loss is too large to use for power application. Also, It is well known in recently years that YBCO CC, the 2nd generation wire, has also too much AC loss to apply to AC power devices. There are many trials to develop the new HTS wire having the low AC loss around the world. In this research, we present the measurment result of magnetization losses in SmBCO coated conductors. We measured the magnetization loss generated by perpendicularly exposed external magnetic field and compared with the analytic value of the strip model. Also, we presented the results compared with measured magnetization loss of an YBCO coated conductor.
Recently, it is proposed to make striations on the YBCO coated conductor and to transpose each other as one of the solutions to decrease the perpendicular magnetization loss. For large power application using HTS, the stacked conductor packing the YBCO coated conductors should be used because single conductor is limited in flowing of demanded large current. In this paper, we research the affect of the striation and continuously transposed stacking geometry on the magnetization loss in perpendicularly exposed magnetic field. Several short samples having different number of striation and continuously transposed stack are prepared and tested in perpendicularly exposed magnetic field for the magnetization loss characteristics. The magnetization loss of striated sample was lower than sample without striation. The reduction effect on magnetization loss by the striation is obviously appeared in higher field and lower number of stack and decreased as increasing the transposed stacking number. Also, the reduction effect by transposed stack is obviously appeared in lower field at lower number of striation and isn't appeared at higher striation number and higher magnetic field.
Coated conductor(CC) is recently in actively progress for the research and development, and its can be used various stabilizer lot the specific requirements for each application. Among various superconducting applications, coated conductor applied to superconducting fault current limiters(SFCLS) bypasses fault current to its stabilizer, where the surge is abruptly reduced ; thus, stainless steel, which has large resistivity can be a suitable stabilizer for SFCLS. Despite high n-value of the YBCO, CC stabilized with stainless steel did not effectively limit the first peak fault current. In the short circuit test results of AMSC's 344S, a half period delay was observed between the fault and the generation of resistance(60Hz). In this paper, we performed short-circuit experiments with stacked and unstacked CC and compared the test results to analyze effective fault current limiting characteristics. we compared time of the generated resistance as the fault current limiting characteristics and made the samples one is the stacked CC and the other is unstacked CC. These samples were used equal numbers of pieces of CC. In addition, comparison and analysis was made for the stacked structure by measuring fault current limiting characteristics with respect to thermal insulation by impregnating with epoxy resin.

Based on Faraday effect, the variation of current flowing through the conductor can be encoded as that of azimuth angle of light polarization propagating through the fiber coil wound onto the conductor. The amount of current can be obtained by measuring the variation of the light intensity transformed from that of the azimuth angle through a polarization analyzer. In this paper we propose a fiber-optic current sensor system that employs a fiber polarization analyzer as a sensor interrogation device. The fiber polarization analyzer was prepared by inscribing a long-period fiber grating on a high birefringent fiber. At the fixed wavelength of 1522.5 nm, the fabricated fiber device has the polarization extinction ratio of more than 25 dB. The measurement of large current up to 600 Arms was accomplished based on a simple fiber interrogation device and the measurement output of the sensor system showed a good linearity.
