PURPOSES : The purpose of this paper is to develop a methodology to estimate level of service of arterial including Exclusive Median Bus Lanes. METHODS : On 6 Exclusive Median Bus Lanes routes in Seoul, bus travel time and number of bus-stop per km were investigated. Also whether or not passing lane exists at bus-stop was checked. Based on the data from sites, bus travel time was estimated according to length of segment, number of bus-stop per km and whether or not passing lane exists at bus-stop. RESULTS : A bus travel time table was developed according to length of segment, number of bus-stop per km and whether or not passing lane exists at bus-stop. After bus travel speed and passenger car travel speed is estimated based on each travel time table and length of segment, two speeds are combined with weighted average speed using traffic volume of each lane group. Then weighted average speed is a measure of effectiveness of arterial including Exclusive Median Bus Lanes. CONCLUSIONS : It can be concluded that the proposed methodology can estimate level of service of arterial including Exclusive Median Bus Lanes considering the operation characteristics of Exclusive Median Bus Lanes.

At present, the length of deceleration lane at freeway diverging areas are designed based on the design speed of main lines and ramps. This is possible on assumption that diverging vehicles decelerate at deceleration section after moving to shoulder lane in advance. But with high diverging volume, several vehicles will try to change to exit lane at the same time. This will cause the distribution of main lane flows or some vehicles may encounter short deceleration length because they miss the proper time to change the lane. The purpose of this study is to establish a design guideline of the length of deceleration section considering the volume of diverging traffic. Also, the results of analysis by the FRESIM simulation model shows that some improvements in respect of delays, speeds and speed deviations of mainline and deceleration lane.

This study estimated the changes in delays and speeds of vehicles in exclusive bus lane and road when the High Occupancy Vehicles(HOV) use the median bus lane. Synchro simulation tool was used to optimize the traffic signal time on the network and VISSIM was applied to simulate various scenarios. Here, drivers behavior parameters in VISSIM was optimized using Simultaneous Perturbation Stochastic Approximation(SPSA) algorithm in order to represent real traffic condition. Based on the simulation results, the delay in Doan daero was decreased when the volume of HOV in current condition runs on the median bus lane, whereas delay in Doan dongro was increased in all scenarios. The changes in bus speed was not sharply decreased for both study sites, even though the number of HOV increased to 10%. Thus, it could be allowed that the HOV use the median bus lane in Doan dongro and Doan daero. Future research tasks include studying about changes in delay when the HOV use the curb bus lane.
Expressways are built to provide for high levels of safety and efficiency in the movement of large traffic volumes at high speeds. However, Gyeongbu and Namhae expressways in the country which are often suffering from the transportation problems with increased import and exoprt cargo trucks including the container vehicles are the major expressways having the Busan Port as the origin and destination regions, and are required to study the expressway traffic characteristics for reducing the transportation problems. We therefore attempted to suggest the expressway density predictive model through the correlation analysis between lane occupancy and mean density at the 8-lane basic segments of the above major expressways in the country.

In this paper, in order to prevent accidents when deviating from the lane during high-speed self-driving, we are going to design a warning system that will sound an alarm after recognizing the surrounding situation with a $360^{\circ}$ camera. Accidents often occur while driving on self-driving cars because they try to change lanes excessively or fail to recognize people, animals and objects that appear suddenly when driving at high speeds. The government wants to identify the surrounding situation with cameras when driving off a lane during high-speed autonomous driving, and to create a car that sounds a warning system through a lane departure sensor on the underside of the vehicle to reduce various accidents that occur during self-driving and to have a safer driving system.

In this study, lane-wise traffic flow characteristics were analysed on uninterrupted flow using a new notion of "lane-wise travel speed reversal (LTSR)" which is defined as a phenomena that travel speed in the median lane is lower than other lanes. Mathematical formulation was also proposed to calculate the strength of LTSR. The experiment road site is Seoul Outer Ring Expressway (Jayuro-IC~Jangsoo-IC), and travel trajectories for each four lane were collected for weekdays (Mon. through Fri.) during morning peak. Comparing lane-wise travel speeds for entire test road section, no LTSR was observed, meaning that the travel speed in the median lane is the fastest, followed by 2nd, 3rd, and 4th lane as in order. Howerver, the result of microscopic analysis using 100-meter discrete road section based data shows that LTSR occurs many times. Especially the strength of LTSR is higher in congestion area and freeway merge and diverge segment. It is expected that these results could be used as a fundamental data when establishing lane-by-lane traffic operation strategy and developing lane-wise traffic information collection and dissemination technology.
The lane-change behavior usually consists of discretionary lane-change and mandatory lane-change types. For the first type, drivers change lanes selectively to maintain their own driving condition and the second type is the case that the drivers must change the current lane, which can occur in recurrent congestion sections like merging and weaving sections. The mandatory lane-change behavior have a great effect on the operation condition of freeway. In this paper, we first generate data such as traffic volumes, speeds, densities, and the number of lane-change within the merging and weaving sections using the data of individual vehicle collected from time-lapse aerial photography. And then, the data is divided into the stable and congested flow by analyzing the speed variation pattern of individual vehicles. In addition, the number of lane-changing from ramp to mainline within every 30-meter interval is investigated before and after traffic congestion at study sites and the distribution of lane-changing at each 30-meter point is analyzed to identify the variation of lane-changing ratio depending on the stable and congested flows. To recognize the effect of mainline flow influenced by ramp flow, this study also analyzes the characteristics of the lane-changing distributions within the lanes of mainline. The purpose of this paper is to present the basic theory to be used in developing a lane-changing model at the merging and weaving sections on freeways.
The purpose of this paper is to perform a basic study on the interaction between lanes, which can be achieved through analyzing traffic breakdown at the microscopic level. Using aerial photographic data for the microscopic analysis, this study analyzed the characteristics of traffic flow at a merging area. This research produced aggregated traffic data such as flows, speeds, and densities in 30 second intervals by lane for the macroscopic analysis and individual headway data by lane for the microscopic analysis. The paper contains an analysis of lane characteristics through flows, speeds, densities, and headway variations and also investigates the influence of ramp flows on mainline flows with space-time diagrams. Firstly, the merging area in this study is divided into three sections: before-merging, during-merging, and after-merging. The transition process was analyzed at each lane. Secondly, the breakdown was observed in detail with data divided in 50-foot units. The breakdown was checked through the relationships between ramp and freeway mainline flows, various techniques were proposed to analyze the breakdown, and the formation of breakdown was introduced as three stages in this study. In the near future, the findings of this study could contribute to determining the dynamic capacity on freeways by easily understanding changeable traffic breakdown patterns over time and space.
Few studies have been carried out to find out the interaction of design speeds, operating speeds, and posted speeds though they have a complementary relationships. As an attempt to find the relationships, this study measured the speeds of the free flowing vehicles at four lane rural highways. In comparison of 95th percentile speeds and inferred design speeds determined from the road design manual with the geometric features of each sites, operating speeds were constantly higher than the inferred design speeds at the sites where the inferred design speed is under 110km/h. and the reverse situation was observed at the sites where the inferred design speed is over 130km/h. In the comparison of operating speeds and posted speeds. the range of the 85th percentile speeds at the sites where posted speeds is 80km/h was distributed from 95km/h to 110km/h. and the range was distributed from the 105km/h to the 120km/h at the sites where posted speeds is 90km/h. Multiple regression analysis was used to develop prediction equations for mean. 85th. and 95th percentile speeds at approach and curve midpoint locations. At the midpoint, only posted speeds influenced the mean, 85th. At the approach locations, the mean, 85th, 95th percentile speeds were influenced by posted speeds and length of the approach tangent.
PURPOSES : Since expressways in South Korea are toll roads, many trumpet type interchanges exist, resulting in the installation of loop ramps very frequently. While the travel speed of the main lane is designed to be 100-110 km/h, the structure of a loop ramp is different and is designed for a minimum speed of 40 km/h. In fact, most of the actual travel speeds measured on the ramp exceed the designated speed, which has been a major problem in traffic safety. In this research, a type of pavement marking speed-reduction treatment called the "Peripheral Transverse Line" is installed on expressway loop ramps in order to study the change of driving speeds after the installation. METHODS : To verify statistically the change, this speed-reduction treatment has been installed on the Chungju interchange and the Yeoju junction. The driving speeds before the installation were compared with driving speeds both one month and five monthsafter the installation. RESULTS : As a result, the reductions of the average driving speeds after the treatment were statistically significant. More specifically, the average driving speeds of the Chungju interchange were reduced by 7.1-7.7 % for its tangent road section, and the speeds decreased by 8.5-9.5 % for its curve section. Similarly, in the Yeoju junction, an average speed reduction of 2.9-4.8 % for its tangent section was measured, along with 3.9% long-term speed reduction for its curve section. CONCLUSIONS : Since the pavement marking speed-reduction treatment has been partially proven to be effective from this research, we expect to expand this treatment and re-confirm the effect from a long-term perspective in the future.
