  • The purpose of this study is to investigate ways to use Landsat TM data for geological mapping and minieralized area detection. The study was carried out in Kyongju-Pohang area where toseki and bentonite mines are distributed. Rock samples of 18 granites, andesites, toseki, betonites, sedimentary rocks and altered rocks in the study area were collected for the study. The radiometric measurtment of the rock samples were carried out with a radiometer in the laboratory and in the field. The Landsat TM bands 2,3,4,5,7 were used for the measurement. The radiometric characteristics of the sample were mainly processed by the principal component analysis. It was found that the pricipal component analysis of the radiometric characteristics of geologic materials is very useful for the detection of the alteration of rocks and grade of mineral contents. It is expected that the technique can be used in the future for the efficient exploration of minerals in this country and abroad.

  • Recently, environmental issues such as climate warming, ozone layer depletion, reduction of tropical forests and desertification are emerging as global environmental problems beyond national problems. And international attention and effort have been carried out in many ways to solve these problems. In this study, the growth of green was calculated quantitatively using the technique of remote sensing and temperature change was figured out through temperature extraction in the city. The land-cover changes and thermal changes for research areas were analyzed using Landsat TM images on May 2002 and May 2009. Surface temperature distribution was calculated using spectral degree of brightness of Band 6 that was Landsat TM thermal infrared sensor to extract the ground surface temperature in the city. As a result of research, the area of urban green belt was increased by $2.87km^2$ and the ground surface temperature decreased by $0.6^{\circ}C{\sim}0.8^{\circ}C$ before and after tree planting projects. Henceforth, if the additional study about temperature of downtown is performed based on remote sensing and measurement data, it will contribute to solve the problems about the urban environment.

  • Remote sensing provides informations on the changes of the hydrological states and variables over with the temporal and spatial distribution to monitor hydrological conditions and changes for large area. Especially, it can extract a spatial distribution of hydrological parameters such as surface albedo, vegetation informations, and surface temperature to effectively manage water resources of the watershed. In this study, we analyzed the characteristic of temporal and spatial changes in surface hydrological parameters which is necessary to identify the spatial distribution of water resources. 5 Landsat TM data of 1995 which is collected for Bochong-chon watershed, located in the upper stream of Keum River, were used to estimate characteristics on the change of hydrological parameters and atmospheric correction was carried out using COST model. The study showed that the difference of the albedo by the land cover was very sensitive depending upon the change of sun elevation and the amount of water in the soil. The difference between the surface temperature analysis and the measured air temperature was from $2.5^{\circ}C$ to $3.86^{\circ}C$.

  • Recently, as various fields of applications using space-borne imagery have been emphasized, interests on integrated analysis or fusion using multi-sources are also increasing. In this study, to investigate applicability of multiple imageries for further regional-scaled application, DN value analysis and multi-resolution classification by using KOMPSAT EOC imagery and Landsat 7 ETM+image data in the Namyangju-city area were performed, and then this classified results were compared to land-use thematic data at the same area. In case of classified results by using muff-resolution image data, it is shown that linear-type features can be easily extracted. furthermore, it is expected that multi-resolution classified image can be effectively utilized to urban environment analysis, according to results of similar pattern by comparative study based on multi-buffered zone analysis or so-called distance analysis along main road features in the study area.

  • It is necessary to check the water quality of the lake on a continuous basis to determine the appearance of water pollution; however, it not only takes much time and expenses but it is considerably difficult to investigate the wide range of the area. If we use the remote sensing technique through the use of satellites, the status of water quality can be checked covering many wide areas simultaneously; and because the same area can be measured on a periodic basis, it is extremely effective in investigating the water quality. Furthermore, as some of the Landsat sensors carry characteristics which sense objects according to wave length, the distribution of water quality can be checked relatively accurately within a short period of time, while its image can be displayed in color. Hence, this research has attempted to extract water quality elements, such as transparency, water depth, and surface water temperature by utilizing the satellite data, and has prepared the water quality distribution image map of the Lake Hwajinpo by presenting the related empirical formula of the water quality elements. If the water quality distribution image map is prepared after extracting the water quality elements from the DN of the Landsat TM image and then carrying out TIN analysis through the use of GIS, relatively more accurate pattern can be learned covering a wide rage of area than the pattern presented based on the value obtained from actual observation.

  • In this study, effective multispectral Landsat TM band combinations for a merging with the high resolution IRS-1C PAN data using the IHS method to improve landuse accuracy is discussed. From the pre-classified image using the merged images with TM all six band images(with the exception of band 6 image) and PAN image, a sample data which has ten classes was generated. An evaluation of the overall classification accuracy for the representative seven merged images which were merged using each TM three-band images and IRS-1C PAN image by IHS method for the sample area. The increase in classification accuracy is most significant with the inclusion of two of TM4, TM5 and TM7 infrared band images. Especially, the largest increase(11.8 percent) in landuse classification accuracy were investigated when Landsat TM247 bands were merged with IRS-1C PAN data. The classification accuracy when TM three band image and PAN image were used without merging is higher than result of the case of using the merged images.

  • The land use has been changed artificially and caused the result of temperature increase of city compared with the outside of city or region of park and forest. The purpose of this research is to analyze the change of the urban surface temperature with land use zoning in Jinju using Landsat TM/$ETM^+$ imagery and to provide the correlation between NDVI(Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) and urban surface temperature change. The results presented that the spatial distribution of urban surface temperature was depending on the change of NDVI values on land use zoning. Considering to the average temperature by land use zoning, industrial area was the highest temperature but green area was the lowest temperature. Also as a result of comparing the correlation between surface temperature and NDVI, the green and residential area had higher correlation values than the commercial and industrial area. These results will be played a part as one of the major factors for implementing the sustainable urban planning considering the urban heat island effect problem.

  • The objective of this study is to conduct land cover classification respectively using Landsat TM data collected on Oct., 1985 and KOMPSAT-1 EOC data collected on Jan., 2000 covering Gumi city, Gyeongbuk Province and to detect urban change by comparing between both land cover maps. Multispectral images of Landsat TM have spatial resolution of 30m are well known as useful data for extracting information related to landcover, vegetation classification, urban growth analysis and so forth. In contrast, as KOMPSAT-1 EOC collects panchromatic images with relatively high spatial resolution of 6.6m. We try to analyze how accurate landcover classification result is able to be derived from the panchromatic images. As the results of the study, the KOMPSAT EOC data with high resolution greater than 4 times showed higher classification degree than Landsat TM data. It was ascertained that the built-up region was extended by three to four times in the last 15 years between 1985 and 2000. In the contrast, it was shown that the forest region was decreased by 15% to 27% and the grass region including agricultural region was decreased by 28% to 45%.
